On Day 24 of our Round the World Trip for Food with Star Alliance, in the morning we flew from Barcelona to Lisbon, Portugal on TAP Portugal airline. After checking into our hotel in Lisbon, we had lunch at a rather tourist Portuguese restaurant and then continued to do a little bit of sightseeing in Lisbon. For dinner, I enjoyed a trend Portuguese meal at Taberna da Rua das Flores.
1:30 Star Alliance Flight #7 on TAP Portugal - The first thing we did during the day was head to the Barcelona airport to catch out flight to Lisbon. Our flight was with TAP Portugal airline, and the flight took about one hour. The flight was nothing special, but it was alright and we soon arrived to Lisbon Portela Airport. From the airport, we decided to take the Aero Bus #1 (3.5 EUR per person) to Avenida da Liberdade which was right next to the hotel we would be staying at in Lisbon.
4:34 The Fontecruz Lisboa Hotel (Marriott Hotel) - For our trip to Lisbon, we stayed at The Fontecruz Lisboa Hotel. It’s a boutique hotel in Lisbon, located along the very pleasant Avenida da Liberdade, a wide and tree lined shopping street in Lisbon. I loved the area, and the hotel was alright, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the dark black theme.
7:25 Lunch at Restaurante Bonjardim - When we arrived to Lisbon we hadn’t eaten lunch, so Ying and I were both extremely hungry. Unfortunately we just didn’t have the energy to go very far to eat lunch (Ying was pregnant and she needed to eat fast!). So we went to a Portuguese food restaurant just down the road from our hotel, and though it wasn’t the most local Portuguese restaurant, we were hungry and the location was right (this is how it sometimes works when you’re traveling). We both ordered the frango asado (roast chicken) and then a bowl of aroz Brasileiro, and a bowl of esparregado. The food was alright, not spectacular, but pretty decent, and it did feel great to eat some a big piece of chicken for some good protein. Total price - 25.10 EUR
12:08 Ascensor da Glória (Price - 3.60 EUR per person roundtrip) - One of the coolest things about Lisbon is the history of the city and the fact that it’s so hilly - and for this reason there are some old vintage funiculars in the city. Right across the square from where we ate lunch we went to the Ascensor da Glória and took the funicular up the hill to Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, which is a lookout viewpoint on the top of the hill. The views of Lisbon were spectacular and it was a good place to get my bearings for Lisbon.
14:42 Igreja de São Roque - From the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, we walked over to Igreja de São Roque, the first Jesuit church in Lisbon. The outside of the church looks quite plain, but inside it’s one of the richest churches in Lisbon.
16:52 Café A Brasileira (Price - 1 EUR per cup) - Café A Brasileira is a legendary coffee shop in Lisbon that was a favorite hangout spot for a number of famous Portuguese poets and writers. I’m happy to report the coffee was amazing, and a decent price as well.
18:48 Taberna da Rua das Flores - For dinner, we walked over to a restaurant called Taberna da Rua das Flores. I have to admit that I was hoping to have some good classic traditional Portuguese food. What I didn’t know was that Taberna da Rua das Flores restaurant only serves Portuguese food for lunch and for dinner they serve a fusion of recipes cooked with Portuguese ingredients. Although a little on the trendy side, the food was excellent. Total price - 32.50 EUR.
It was a good day, I was a little disappointed that I didn’t get really good Portuguese food, but that’s alright, that’s sometimes the way traveling can be. It was still an excellent day and we enjoyed some good restaurants in Lisbon.
Disclaimer and Thank You:
Thank you to Star Alliance and their Round The World tickets (www.staralliance.com/en/round-...) for sponsoring my business class flights.
Thank you to The Fontecruz Lisboa Hotel for sponsoring my stay in Lisbon.
I personally paid for all food and attractions in this video, and I decided what to do and where to eat.

I am so glad you went to Portugal, their cuisine is always over-shadowed by their larger neighbours, but it is so distinct and so incredibly flavoursome; it marries humble cooking with proud delivery and unique flavour combinations, it's wonderful. More so than Spain they have used the influences from their travels in the age of exploration to make their national dishes what could arguably be termed the worlds very first fusion cuisine. That's an accolade in itself. If you've never tried Portuguese cuisine folks, find out where you can do so, go treat yourself.

Agree Portuguese food is far more vibrant than most found in Spain...the spicing etc just is so hard to find in Spain partly due to the rejection of anything vaguely spicey by most Spanish...it means a lot of dishes are bland...in Portugal the use of chillies/spice really elevates those delicious ingredients they use....

Hello @Mark Wiens!! That was not folk music. Those persons are stundents of university that apply to a music group called "Tuna" (yes like the fish). They sing original musics that they create and try to raise money to get new instruments and other things to. Their clothes are called "Traje Académico". Some people believe that J K Rowling got inspired by that to write "Harry Potter". Thank you so much to showcase some of the beauties of our country, I LOVE IT!!

I love Portuguese food a lot. I think the most interesting cuisine in Europe, since they mixed spices found during their discoveries (cinnamon, cilantro, et cetera) and the local ones. Portuguese people have sweet teeth.

Just some clarifications: The Portuguese found indeed many new things, but those you´re talking about were already in all Europe prior to the discovery of a maritime rute to India. So It was nothing new, we simply wanted to control that market and we did it good. Right?

Lisboa and Coimbra are two of my favorite cities in Portugal. Add to that Évora and Cintra and you got four exciting cities. To eat real Portuguese food choose a place where there is a lot of working people eating. Can’t beat grilled sardines on a stick, over charcoal sprinkled with coarse sea salt, lemon juice and good Portuguese olive oil. The liquid crack they serve at the “Café A Brasileira” is tops and what a good expresso should taste like (reasonably priced too). The grilled octopus with olive oil and lemon juice, paired with a cold beer in the summer is superb. It has a great smoky flavor from the hardwood charcoal. When in Lisboa, wear comfortable shoes because you can mostly feel the pulse of the city by walking. By the way, the music you used on the background is not Portuguese music, but music from the northeast of Brazil.

Hadn't it been for the earthquake of 1755, Lisbon would today be as rich in cultural landmarks as Paris or Rome. And even so I love it!

from what I noticed, Portuguese food is very similar to Goan food. I guess because the Portuguese dominated Goa and ruled the place for quite some time. u have an amazing choice of places and food. great video as usual. have a great day!!!

Goan food is diverse. The food is mainly the Konkan type food which is similar to Coastal Maharashtra and then there's Portuguese type food. Portuguese also conquered Coastal areas of Maharashtra like Vasai, parts of Alibaug, Diu and Daman, Mangalore and some parts of Kerala too..

Epic episode. I really want to visit Lisbon someday. Looks like it has a lot of flavor and culture. That roast chicken looks insanely good. Portuguese seem like the masters of roast chicken. They introduced tempura to Japan back in the day too no? That black pork look real good too.

Yes about the tempura and vindaloo was also the Portuguese, and they brought tea to England...their subtle presence is everywhere.

Peter you know your food history, good stuff. That's totally correct. I'd like to add sorpotel, a goan dish just like vindaloo that not many people try but it's phenomenal. Kasutera, Nagasaki desert and the famous Brazilian Feijoada. As you put it, it's subtle but it's everywhere

The whole concept of the food chain Nando's is based on Portuguese roast chicken! The founder of Nando's fell in love with Portuguese cuisine, and especially the roast chicken! The reason why we don't have Nando's in Portugal is because, well, we dont need it! This is because roast chicken can be found basically anywhere in the country!

Not sure about the Food but Culture wise yes there is a strong Portuguese influence in India in Goa, Diu Daman, Kerala etc. Most of the forts, ancient churches were built by the Portuguese and even most of the Indian Christians in these areas have Portuguese names
