Flying King update, and why I am going to miss the Winter Build Challenge deadline. Moving on...

EP 37: Flying King Update, and going to be moving on….
This episode I get you up to date on the assembly of the wing panels on Bruce Tharpe Engineering, Flying King electric conversion. Bruce Tharpe Engineering Also, I have news.
My wife and I are moving. And the new house has a proper shop!!! No more sharing a garage with vehicles, camping gear and pickling supplies. Nope, this shop will be about 2 ½ times larger than my single bay of the three car garage present shop, and enough storage to hold the contents of my storage unit so all of those planes in the queue, parts and building materials will all be in one place again. It's going to be great. Stay tuned for the new shop update, and of course more building adventures.

When it comes to RC building there is never enough time and never enough room, lol. Good luck with the new place!

I always respect a guy who's shop is messy because he actually uses it.

There is so much truth in that. Sometimes I spend an entire day putting everything away and it feels like I wasted a day. 😊

Don't rush... moving is enough stress. I'd box everything up and take it to your storage unit so it stays safe. Looking forward to seeing the new shop.

Stability and self leveling depends on where the wing is positioned if its on top fuz below your weight is helping pull the wing moving but low and mid wing not so forgiving you will need a bit more control input than a high wing wouldn't you agree. And polyheadrel is dihedral in the centre and on the tips according to my flight science teacher in 1978 we would build free flight sail planes in this subject and test our designs they dam well flew because the found a thermal and we're never seen again unless someone from the public returned it back to the school as we put the school nane on it

Yes I'm glad you asked. It took a while to settle into the new place. Also exiting the old place meant not only moving everything out but doing the things that need to be done to prepare the place to sell. Once that was done it came down to sorting everything that was left by the prior owner (keep or throw away), and redoing all of the lights (22 fixtures) with bright LEDs for work and videoing, finally organizing the place for everything and everything in its place. I have shot three videos that I am putting into the editor now so hopefully it will be soon to release new stuff.

Enjoying your build videos. I have a question about mics and editing.I’m thinking of recording my build of a Great Lakes trainer and I wonder if a cheap mic is better than a camera or phone mic? I see the one that you wear on your shirt and your videos have good sound. Is it a Bluetooth mic? What editing software do you use? Thanks for any help.

The mic I am using is the Rode Wireless Mic and it was their first edition. I’m not sure if its bluetooth or wi fi, it has a transmitter (the part on my shirt, and a receiver dongle that plugs into the camera via 3.5 mic jack. I have found that it really provides good output to the camera’s audio pre amp and reduces back ground noise. You want the camera’s recording volume on the lower side so that it doesn’t have a hissing noise in the background. Set your camera’s recording level manually DO NOT USE AUTO it will chase the volume and sound terrible. Experiment with your auto setting until you have good sound with no distortion. My editing software is DaVinci Resolve Studio. Im a camera geek so I bought the paid version but they have a pretty capable free version that does much more than most free versions. In my shop I have several background noise challenges. Its a three bay garage with the water heater (gas…. Fooom hisssss) the Furnace (Fooom rumble, fan) in winter and (Cooling tower whine rumble fan running for hours) summer. Then there is a refrigerator, and freezer standing side by side right next to the bench with compressors kicking on randomly. If that’s not enough we are a few miles from the only F-15 training facility in the US, which we are very proud of. But when those guys come back from their war in the skies over the eastern Oregon desert they pass right over my house. So…. Yeah I have a noise floor to work with. However I find using the mic and a noise reduction filter in the editor that concentrates on speech works really well. Except for the jets. Nothing can beat that. Most cameras and phones have okay mics. But for my environment I needed better. On occasion if I am doing a close up on the bench I will use the camera’s native mic but you can sure tell when I have mixed audio sources. Prior to the Rode wireless I used a mp3 recorder from Tascan that did a great job as well but meant matching a separate audio track to the video in the editor. It wasn’t hard and sounded good as well but it adds another step and another thing to turn on and off and another possible way to mess up, like when you forget to turn on the recorder and reshoot an entire sequence, or one of the setting distorted out the whole thing. I just find the wireless makes like simpler. Dji now has a wireless mic system that is worth a look as well. I may check that out in the future. Yep, camera geek.

thanks for the reply Dan, now you’re starting to scare me with all the possibilities that could go wrong. I have a great Lakes trainer kit that I want to build but in order to do a video I might do a radio install video on a Carl Goldberg falcon 56 that I bought all built. That might be a easier video to do than an actual build. thanks for all the advice on all the equipment also. Can’t wait to see your new shop and it’s set up.

Installing a radio is a great topic. There are lots of things to talk about. Just relax and pretend the camera is a buddy of yours visiting your shop and you are showing him or her how to set it up. The cool thing is, you can always practice and see how it comes out. Have fun with it relax be yourself. Don’t give up. I have shot some videos with only one take, and I have some that took so many takes that I had to walk away to think about what I really wanted to and how to get it out. But it comes eventually.

That’s a Bowers Fly Baby. To me it looks much like a Spacewalker. That one is hanging at the Boeing Museum of Flight in Seattle.
