Flying Into Large Airports

We, as General Aviation pilots, usually don’t fly into the larger class Bravo and Charlie airports. They don’t have the services we need, they are inconvenient, and even for the most experienced GA pilots they can be stressful and nerve wracking. But eventually you are going to end up flying into a larger airport to pick somebody up or drop somebody off and you want to be prepared.
Keeping Runway Safety in mind, take a few minutes during your preflight planning and do your best to memorize the taxiways that will be available on your landing runway. You will have a completely different picture out the window and the biggest thing that will stand out will be the line of large jets that will be waiting for you to land, taxi or take off. You want to do your best to be seamless in their operation without jeopardizing safety. Know what taxiways to expect and know where you will be parking and familiarize yourself with the taxiways that will take you there…. The more you can prepare yourself, the more you can minimize surprises, both for you, and the large jets that will be waiting for you.

    Protip, declare an emergency each time and you'll always be given priority in front of those flying boats. What's a little extra paperwork in the scheme of things?

    Having that taxi diagram already mapped out with the possibilities, really helps. A suggestion is to ask for progressive taxi, if they spew too many taxiways at you.... I heard that Foreflight is including taxi stuff within the app.

    What were the engine hours on your cardinal when you decided to pull it? I have a cardinal in a prebuy right now with 490 hours on the engine, but it was overhauled in 1987... makes me a little nervous. All compressions are high 70s except #4 at 68....

    My engine hours were at 1850 but the engine was installed in 1989 so it sat for a while obviously and that’s the worst thing that can happen to an engine. I did get the life out of it that I expected to….

    @@MidknightS0N I had about 1500 when I bought it …. I only paid 38k when I bought the plane so the price was right for a re-power - I had planned on it anyway …
