Fly Reaction Time Test

Ғылым және технология

In 1950, an article was published by C. M. Herget in the Journal Science.
It was entitled:
Reaction Time of the Common Housefly (Musca domestica)
Science 14 Jul 1950: Vol. 112, 2898, 62
DOI: 10.1126/science.112.2898.62
In short, the researchers measured how long it takes a fly to react after quickly removing a platform from where it was standing with a bullet. They found that it took the fly around 21 milliseconds to extend its wings and take flight after falling with gravity a small fraction of an inch. That reaction time is more than 12x faster than that of a human.
This weekend, I did some testing with colleagues Toni Lucatorto and Kamil Paszkiewicz. Similar to that science paper, we tested how quickly a fly reacts by quickly removing 'the stage' from where a fly was standing. We did this by firing an arrow through an orange with a crossbow.
Interestingly, we found that it took nearly 50 frames (at 6000 frames-per-second) before the fly responded by beating its wings. That's about 8.3 milliseconds!
One thing we can never know... was she already planning to take off? :)

    The best way for a fly to avoid getting hit by an amor piercing fin stabilized discarding sabot composed mainly of depleted uranium, fired from a 120 mm cannon mounted on an m1 Abrahams, it should fly as high as it can. @@user-hi3cw6vc9j The scenario you've described is quite challenging for a fly to avoid, given the extreme speeds and forces involved, so I made considerations of tactics the fly could use: 1. Utilize Evasive Maneuvers: Given the fly's small size and agility, it could employ rapid evasive maneuvers characterized by sudden changes in direction and altitude. Employing high-frequency wing oscillations and intricate aerial patterns could enhance its chances of avoiding interception. 2. Leverage Environmental Features: The fly could exploit environmental features such as terrain undulations, foliage, or structures to break line-of-sight with the incoming projectile, disrupting the targeting solution. Utilizing micro-scale turbulence generated by obstacles could further augment its evasive capabilities. 3. Dynamic Threat Assessment: Leveraging its compound eyes, the fly could engage in continuous threat assessment, rapidly identifying incoming threats and adjusting its flight path accordingly. Utilizing visual cues and rapid cognitive processing, the fly could optimize its evasion strategy in real-time. 4. Adaptive Flight Trajectories: The fly could dynamically adjust its flight trajectory based on threat dynamics, incorporating elements of chaotic motion and stochastic behavior to confound predictive targeting algorithms. By embracing nonlinear flight paths, the fly could maximize its chances of survival against highly deterministic threats. 5. Optimal Altitude Management: While flying at higher altitudes may mitigate the risk of direct interception by armor-piercing projectiles, it exposes the fly to other aerial threats such as surface-to-air missiles. Thus, the fly must dynamically modulate its altitude profile, balancing the trade-off between ballistic protection and vulnerability to airborne threats. 6. Bio-inspired Evasion Tactics: Drawing inspiration from biological systems, the fly could employ bio-inspired evasion tactics such as mimicry, camouflage, or decoy deployment to deceive targeting systems and increase its survivability in hostile environments.

    I have many issues with this annoying belief. One, saying instinct based makes it sound stupid, since ALL creatures including humans are instinct-based. Second, how can you conclude they are not thinking? Did you become a fly with the human perception in order to self evaluate as a fly that you can think then turned back into a human remembering the human perception as a fly and told the world of your discoveries? Of course not. Any experiment we conduct on other animals is and should be consider hypothesis, flawed, biased, and not "truth", since your evaluating certain things based on limited understanding of what thinking is (and the opinionated perception of what that is). Just because it makes sense, doesn't mean it's true. The only truthful thing is that they are incredibly small, so from point A to point B is much shorter, and assuming same electrical speed.

    they are tiny creature and probably work purely off of reflexes. neurons do not have to send signals nearly as far in a fly the length of a centimeter, in comparison to a human who is more than 5 feet in length. you ever notice how quick your eyelids are to react to protect your eyes? when you flinch you are not controlling your eyelids, they are purely working off of reflex

  • @wormball

    @wormball

    Human is about 500 times larger than the fly so you would have 4 seconds reaction time (or about 0.5 m/s signal speed). So not exactly astonishingly fast. Also we may notice that the speed of neural signal in human is about 100 m/s, and the speed of light is 300000000 m/s, so purely electrical circuit can react million to billion times faster than any animal.

    The initial stimulus must be precisely the moment just before the projectile contacts the peel. This will be the most accurate measurement to begin. The moment the fly begins to flap is too late. For the end timestamp, use the moment before the reaction. Though, some would say thile reaction time isn't just awareness based... In that case, the exact moment the fly left contact of the peel would be used. Otherwise the measurement is using a physical reaction to interpret a reaction time based on awareness. This is possibly presumptious and potentially unspecific measurements.
