Fly fishing the Green river from pontoon boats

Some friends and I floated the Green river with our pontoon boats hoping to catch the cicada hatch. We ended up catching some nice browns on large dry flies. The first day was kind of slow but the fishing turned on the second day.

I have only fished that river once in my life and it was when I did a river rafting trip with my High School. I was not able to fish it while floating it (They would not let me) but when we stopped at each camping stop I was on the water. I was only catching little ones but one spot I did a hell mary. I casted my black rooster tail up strea against the cliff and reeled in really fast and BAM! I thought I had snagged the cliff wall. Turns out I was able to land a 26 in brown. Loved that trip.

Well done...brings back memories from when I was guiding here (in the glory days). Remember catching my first 24 on a #24 at the pyramid boulders @ 7:25. Managed a trip there a week and a half ago, just before they "flushed the toilet" and brought it up to 8500. Miss those days when you wondered what you did wrong because you only landed 30 fish and just 2 @ 5 lbs. This was back when we were still naming the runs (mine were secret riffle and diving board). The most consistent thing about fly fishing is, nothing good lasts long, or for you Millennials, NGLL. :-)

I’ve been wanting to go for a long time and am working on getting a pontoon boat for Bass fishing lakes and thought it would be awesome to use to float the Green as well. This river is on my bucket list so I better try to go soon. Cicadas look like a blast to fish. I too love huge dries and also Steelhead fishing w big flies. Looks like fun.

I've seen some people put decks on their pontoons to fish lakes but never on a river. It's illegal on many rivers to use motors. It would likely get destroyed in the rocks even if it was legal. Motors certainly are handy when it comes to lakes however. I've been jealous many times when people cruise by me with a motor.

About half of my friends have the Panther and the other half have Colorado XT's. The Panthers cost twice as much but like most of the time, you get what you pay for. The Colorados are good boats but noticeably less beefy than the Panthers. The Panther is river rated where the Colorado isn't----however they still handle the Green river just fine. Personally I would still go with the Panther, it sits lower with the double(smaller) pontoon set up per side so you don't get pushed around as bad in the wind. The Panther is around $999 and the Colorado is usually between $450 and $500. If you have the money I would go with the Panther. If you can't dump the grand on the Fish Cat then the far cheaper Colorado is still a good boat

Mike McGrath If I may, I would like to second the vote for the Panther. I’ve had three pontoons now, and it’s far away the best. In a former boat, I was in the middle of a lake when one of the pontoons let go. Trying to row back on a tilting, dragging, single pontoon cut a few years of my life! With the double pontoons on each side, I feel much safer. And it rides low, so I am not blown around in the wind like my buddies are. Plus the frame seems much sturdier. As far as price goes, if you blow a pontoon in a Colorado, and lose your gear, or worse, you’ll wish you would have got the Panther!

Actually only one of four on the trip had been on the boats before we launched. If you have ever spent any time rowing a boat you'll be fine. If you haven't then practice in the eddy right where you launch before you head down the river. I would recommend concentrating on the float your first time down instead of fishing unless you take to it right off the bat. Once we got past the first rapid and realized how stable the boats actually are we were fine. We've had a couple people go with us over the years that really struggled the first time down. By the second float they were fine, but it can be dangerous for some. You'll have to let me know how the Stealth handles it. I was actually looking into the stealth pro last year simply because they are far easier to move around by yourself

@@TroutHowler thanks for the reply. Ended up drifting the section with no worries. The anticipation of the unknown was exciting, but the rapids were easily navigated. I don’t have anything to compare to, but the osg stealth handled flawlessly. I really like the ability to break it down to the size of a large duffle bag. It stores in my camper nicely and is simple to deploy. I could see how sitting a little higher in the water would be nice, but I was more than comfortable and able to get my casts wherever I wanted. I’m glad I purchased the Scotty fly rod mount before going rather than being a cheapskate. Made the transition from rod to parts pretty nice, especially when my noob self saw rapids quickly approaching. Fishing was tough for me. Looking forward to heading back there again, but probably later in the year when the bugs are popping. Water temps were 36 when I was there.
