Fly Fishing Rutland Water : New Zealand Bay (12-05-21) 4K

Спорт

After nearly two hours of fruitless effort at New Zealand point, one of my subscribers came up to say hello. Even better than that, Ash a local property maintenance expert, told me where he was fishing just 200 yards away and what flies were catching the fish so I just had to give it a go for myself.
Lets see what happens..........
Thanks Ash!

Well done Sir, great vid, keep them coming. Am hoping to be at Rutland later this week, so if anyone notices a strange bloke talking to himself, then that will probably be me cursing at my casting and knot tying skills, or the lack of them. Any pointers for this week’s bank fishing tactics and flies are always appreciated.

There’s fish all over Alex. Dickenson’s and Transformer in North Arm. Gibbets, NZ round to sailing club. Haven’t done the main basin this season yet. Black nymphs, dawl bachs and buzzers. Keep changing flies if it doesn’t work in 5-10 minutes. Washing line, static buzzers and even stripping works.

I took a lessons no today to try and get more effortless power rather than powerful effort. It’s going to take a lot practice! I’m too old for the power cast now.

@@johnp4hc still can’t find the video I wanted but have found another interesting one. I was taught by jack simpson rod maker many years ago. Went to Belize for bonefising a couple of years ago so looked at a lot of salt water casting videos before going. Think they helped me. Every day’s a school day!

@@michaelairey I had one chap give me a ton of abuse before I removed him about my rubbish casting. It’s not rubbish as I can cast just as far as many double haulers, I just need about 300% more effort. I’m thinking of strapping my right elbow to my right side when practising to take the shoulder out of casting. When I Spey cast for salmon my shoulder is passive and I cast a long way.

Don't worry about the missed takes and lost fish, that it is why it is called fishing not catching! If you look carefully the fish is waving two fins at you, just tip your hat and wish them luck.

  • @johnp4hc

I don’t mind missed takes at all. It tells me I’m at least doing something right. Been thinking a lot about how fish take. They obviously suck the buzzer in, that’s the tug, then turn and run and it becomes a catch when the fly is then pulled into the sizzles or side of their mouth as they shoot off. I guess it means we only really feel it at the end. So many times fishing I feel the line tighten or stiffen and I guess that’s the suck in and spit out without the turn.

@@johnp4hc there are four stages to fishing. Stage 1 want to catch a fish, 2 catching a lot of fish, 3 catching big fish, stage 4 happy to be fishing. I think we are both at stage 4!
