Fly Fishing Big Spring PA for GORGEOUS WILD fish

Спорт

Big Spring in PA is a challenging and technical stream. However, it does have the ability to catch a variety of wild trout and they are stunning. Natural presentation, drag free drifts, and sight fishing is the name of the game. I hope you sit back, enjoy, and learn something.

Hi Mike! Another nice thing about Big Spring and all those other Streams you mentioned, super consistent conditions, even after a pouring rain or drought, always clear cold stable water. Very pretty fish. Thanks for sharing.

Just got the Fly Fishing book you referenced the other day, excellent resource. Big Spring is TOUGH. I hit it like 10 times to get two 20inch fish but skunked all other times. Practicing fly fishing but sticking to my spin rod. Keep it up man.

Glad to hear it! That book is a GEM!!!!!!! You already seem to know your stuff. I am always impressed where you go and the quality of streams you end up on. Big Spring is super hard, and probably a stream that you can get your PB from, but then in same light walk out with nothing. I am sure there is a science to it, but I haven't figured it out. Stick with fly fishing, you will get it for sure. Clearly you know how to fish, approach water, where they are, just a matter of practice and learning what works fly wise. Keep it up man, awesome to see the success you are having!

There are 3 big named ones in the area and are all unique and cool. There are some other smaller ones too that I have heard about that aren't bad either. I am likely headed to one this upcoming week to see how it goes. Thanks for watching. Whenever you want to fish PA or MD, just let me know.

I live on big spring creek. Right down about a quarter mile from where you started out is a bridge with two lanes and houses. That's where I live. There's plenty of 15 to 20 inch plus trout but they're hard as he'll to catch lol

Funny you say that. About a 1/4 below that gravel lot where I started, and above another little bridge, I have seen a moster 20 plus in rainbow. I missed the hookset on him during a guide trip. Got him to take, watched the whole eat, but then missed the set. I was HEARTBROKEN. There are definitely some super quality fish in that stream, but they all have P.h.D.'s in flies. Thanks for watching, commenting, and subbing!

@@tightliningmd you mean at the bridge on nealy rd. I never really fished that far down. Theres a few fish that hang out under the bridge at my house all the time and downstream between my house and that lot I've seen a couple big ones.

Big Spring was heaven on earth . You used to be able to sight fish to pods of 20”+ bows. I guess they went through with trying to make it brookies only. . .

I have heard stories like that for sure. I still see a good number of them out and about, but not so many where you feel the stream is loaded with them. It is a shame they would want to push the brookies over those gorgeous big bows. Either way, very unique stream and cool to fish. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Thank you very much. Trout season is almost here, although it always is for me :) I find year round water ways no matter what. However, the bugs will be coming off in earnest soon. That should make things a bit more interesting. I am really sorry to hear about the job. Silver linings though as you mentioned. I hope you are able to find something temporary, grind out the hard times, and come out on the other side better for it. Tight lines man and keep your head up!

Appreciate the love. Good to be back to editing and producing stuff. I have about 8-9 more ready to edit. One is done, and I will upload on Thursday I think. Trying to put one out every 5-7 days, but not too much so it waters down people watching the most recent. I would say the creek overall is about 24 inches deep is most spots. However, there are certainly plenty of holes that are 3-5 feet deep, but just the norm. Very clear, very cool, and fish very smart/aware. Real chess match with the pressure they see here. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Tight Lining MD that’s great you have a bunch of film to get edited. Can’t wait to see them and catch up. Your plan sounds good with a weekly vid! That should surly kick you over that 1k line. 24” is plenty of water over there heads to make them feel comfortable until danger shows up. You’ve really dial this style of fishing in. Love it!

@@BeyondTheFly Thank god I am backloaded. I am house bound essentially and would be going crazy without some fish in my life :) I agree its plenty as well, but just with that clarity creeping up, staying low, and minimal back casts are key. Great fish, Mike! I have fished Big Spring several times over the last few weeks and have had varying degrees of success, probably because I wasn't stealthy enough. However on my first-ever outing I was rewarded with two tiny brookies comparable to yours on an Ausable Wulff of all things, and a pair of beautiful rainbows both exceeding 14 inches! They both took sow/cress bugs, either a size 22 beadhead with rainbow shrimp dubbing or a more traditional #18 with just copper wire and squirrel. It's a great fishery and I look forward to fishing it again this week! Have you ever tried Green Spring? Eager to try there as well. Thanks!

A few 14' fish are a great day on that stream, nice job! I don't have many things in my arsenal for that stream. I would need to buy or tie and I don't fish it enough to justify either, so I am somewhat limited. Sounds like you have it figured out though. I have not fished Green Spring, although I have researched it and considered it. You think it is worth it? I got a lot of mixed reviews on it. Any suggestions or advice is appreciated. Thanks for watching and commenting. Tight lines!

Green Spring is terrible. Used to be decent, but it’s just full of chubs, might catch a stockie or 2. It’s only 10 minutes from Big Spring, but not worth it IMO.

Thanks Scott. That is a super hard place to fish. I got skunked the first time I went. That is why I hired a guide for the second trip. It was only $100 bucks for a half day. Helped me out a lot. Also showed me around the stream and gave suggestions. Money well spent. Hope you can go back and have a little luck sometime. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

  • @tightliningmd

Thanks! The water system is cool. Unfortunately super technical and gets pounded. It makes the rewards though a bit sweeter. The fish will hide in undercuts for sure. The problem is so much silt and muck when you step in. So it is tough to cast across to them and get a good drift to them. You would be surprised how many 20 inch fish you can see out in the open though. I saw 3-4 on this trip, let alone what was hiding. Thanks for watching and commenting!
