Trifecta of Trout on Falling Springs Branch PA

I hit up a Class A Wild Stream, that also has some monster fish stocked in it as well. Very unique stream for a variety of reasons. I catch three types of trout, two of which were wild. Enjoy the film on this great piece of water!

No doubt. I think I got a bit lucky, and also worked it hard to pick up some fish. A friend of mine, who could outfish me on any day ending in "y", got skunked there, not long after my trip. However, I will take a little luck some days :P Thanks for watching and good luck next time you go out!

Wilds spook so easily. I spend hours on my hands and knees crawling to cast. Growing up my father would bring us to streams so small you’d never believe a fish was even holding. It’s those small streams and tributaries where I learn to fish like a stealth ninja. Now I’m always cautious about how close I am to a riff or pool that I’m looking to cast to. Nice video! I’ll have to check out more. Fishing during the winter is the best, hope you’re getting out there.

I totally agree with you. When possible I will stay out of the water, cast from a tight line distance. I don't do a ton of on my hands and knees, but if the situation calls for it I will. Brookies I find are the most spooky. Then again they are in the clearest of water typically too. Thanks for checking out the video and leaving a comment. I unfortunately have not fished much this winter. I coach basketball and have a family and work. Therefore, my time has been limited. I will get out there this weekend and fish some thankfully. I hate not being out once a week if it all possible. This year only out 3 times so far!

Probably my favorite stream. My brother and i come up for a few days a year from Ohio to fish there and Big Spring just Northwest of there. The section you are fishing in is stocked, but there are plenty of wild ones as well. Some of them are huge. Probably pushing 27 inches...There is some great fishing Upstream of 81 but the fish are almost all wild and very spooky. There are some monsters up there as well.

Joel, Firstly thanks for leaving a comment and also the feedback. That stream is special for sure and I will make a point to go back soon, especially this winter while trout are sluggish. You may have actually just salvaged my next trip. Most streams are running too cold, but this one will hold its temp over the winter, to a degree(pun intended). I spooked a real monster, well I spooked a dink that spooked a monster. The stream is special for a variety of reasons for sure, and in my eyes thankfully it seems underutilized. I was aware of the other areas somewhat, but also knew they get quite overgrown, which is a gift and a curse. I tried a section I knew would be more fishable, given the time of year. Maybe in my next trip I fish the other areas, since vegetation should be down. I have never been to the other stream, but that stream and Fishing Creek are on my target list to hit this year, fingers cross. Don't get me wrong, many others, but those I am sure you know. Tight lines and hope you subbed, if you didn't already :)

Bud the hole were you seen the 20 or so inch brown the slow water on the bend holds a huge brown boot 28 or 29 inches long I lived in chambersburg and have fished the stream. For years there are some monsters in the artificial lures section and down stream from there on the next Ben is two nice holes that usually hold some big ones and that is stock by the state and. The chambersburg rod and gun club there is natural spawning going on in there for sure but it is also stocked pretty good in the spring time right lines brother 🎣

Miguel, Thanks for the detailed breakdown of the area. Having one been there once this is very helpful. I would like to go back again this winter/spring. I hit the Letort just the other day, moved a few fish, one of which was very large, but ultimately got nothing. When I was on this stream a local chatted with me for a bit about the stream. He told me about the big one you mentioned as well. I will need to work on streamer game to entice a large fish like that. Next time I go back I will use some of your advise to hunt for larger fish. It was such a beautiful area and stream. You are lucky to live close. Tight lines and thanks for watching!

Great video! When you say "a holdover" does that mean a stocked fish that has stayed longer than expected?

  • @tightliningmd

    @tightliningmd

    5 жыл бұрын

Great question! It means it was stocked in either the spring of this year and has survived up until now, or possibly even from previous years stockings. So for example, a fall stocking in most streams is approaching. Any fish that was stocked in the spring and not caught and kept as of this fall stocking is now a holdover fish. As opposed to a wild fish that was bred in the stream, and natives which have lived in the stream since it became a watershed.

At 8:39 it appears you are walking on someone's manicured planting bed and behind you is a mowed lawn. Do the property owners allow anglers to walk through their property to fish? Was there a No Trespassing sign at 12:18?

  • @tightliningmd

Matt, It is tough to tell if you are telling me I am trespassing or just curious. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and explain. To answer your questions..... I was on a public stream and didn't go on any yards that said no trespassing. I was uneasy about how the river backed up to houses throughout. Most of the time when I fish, I try to stay in the water. However, much of where I fished made that difficult to fish well given the stream layout. The sign you saw was a stocking sign, not a no trespassing sign. The fellow you could hear speaking to me talked to me at length, some of which was recorded. He told me about the only area I encountered that was private, and that was WELL documented as well as MUCH further downstream. As a result of his advice I stayed away. As a fly fisherman that loves the precious resources afforded to me, due to landowners being courteous enough to allow access I don't leave trash, I handle fish with care, and I avoid any gray area that could get me in personal/legal trouble. I appreciate you watching the video, but from all the information presented to me at the time of fishing, I was well within my rights to be fishing where I was.

"It is tough to tell if you are telling me I am trespassing or just curious." No, and yes! No, I wasn't "telling" you were trespassing. I was just asking, and I was curious. I personally would of felt uncomfortable fishing in someone's backyard. I'm a property owner on the West Branch of the Delaware. I do post my property and kindly ask other anglers to stay in the water and not walk through my property because it may be faster than wading through the river. However if you were permitted to fish through and the owners are okay with it then sure have a ball. The water didn't look like it could be waded very well. It appeared that the bottom near shore was soft and likely silted. If you waded you would likely sink in to your knees and release a ton of sediment that would disturb the water for any anglers below you.

@@flyman451 Matt, Thanks for clarifying your response. As I mentioned, uneasy was the word for me for sure. When I am on the edge of someones property, and I see them, I ask for permission. Most people, much like yourself, will post things early and often if they want you out. I respect that and want to avoid the headache and quite frankly any fine/trouble with the law. This stream has a VERY silty bottom. I didn't stay in water much at all during this trip. The person who was also at the stream stayed on the bank the whole time and fished areas I walked through as well. He claims to go daily and year round. For that reason I felt more comfortable with where I was. I do agree though being mindful of someones hard work in the garden is imperative too. Overall its a beautiful stream, tough to navigate in the water, but luckily most landowners have drawn agreements up with Trout Unlimited to allow fishing access. I read about the place extensively online and in the Keystone Fly Fishing book before the trip. Thank you for watching and I hope one day to fish the Delaware. I have never been but hear great things. You are very lucky to have a place backing up to it!

Hello Tight Line, I live in York, and have fished Falling Springs a few times but to tell you the truth it is just not the kind of water that I like to fish. I prefer big water where I can cast overhead (conventional) without either breaking a rod tip or getting a fly hug up in branches. I also prefer to fish where big trout are likely to be hooked on every visit. Is there any way to contact you directly? Troutman is just my screen name. I don't use my real name as I don't want people looking for me on Facebook or Goggling my real name. I know the entire Delaware River system very well. I have been fishing it for fifty years. If you ever get an opportunity to visit, during the week, I will take you out on a float in my Hyde drift boat.

Just saw this comment, it got flagged. You are most definitely right about the location and fish. Much more stockies down this way, but still some wild fish too. I have fished the upper section one time. I moved a monster trout, but he refused at last second. Very tough fishing up that way, although better in the early spring and winter for less vegetation. Thanks for the sub and comment. I appreciate it!
