I’m going to paraphrase but joe once said “I’m 84 and I’m on the downside of the mountain. One day I won’t be able to fish anymore and all I will have are the memories”. I’m so thankful I got to have this memory with him.

Joe was my Wrestling Coach at Bald Eagle Jr. Sr. High School and is still one of the most honest respected men I have ever had the pleasure of Knowing and to this day he still remembers me and my Brother from Wrestling. That was back in 69-70.

Joe Humphreys was my professor at Penn State University for a gym class in fly fishing. He taught us how to tie flies and tied an ant for me and I went out and caught a nice trout with him on one of our fishing excursions. Forty years ago he was a character and now he is 90. Here is the trailer for a new film about his life.

You’re pretty lucky man, I taught myself how to fly fish. I always wished I had someone to teach me a few things.

I was lucky to do the same. I was there between 85-89. I think I had the fly fishing class during the 86-87 year. Went to Fisherman's Paradise and Whipple Dam as class fishing-outings. Joe had hotdogs grilled up and snacks for us when we got done at Whipple Dam. I treasure my experiences with Joe.

I started flyfishing about 30 years ago. I never had anyone teach me. It was the Joe Humphrey instructional videos that got me started. Joe dedicated his entire life to this sport! What an extraordinary man! Thank you Mr. Humphries for your contributions in teaching so many people the love of the outdoors. God bless you sir! 👍

Well, just got teary-eyed at that video. A life well lived. Beautiful cast, beautiful scenery, being helped to have another go at a huge brown at 90 yrs old. Amazing.

I had the pleasure of enjoying a whiskey drink with Joe at a fishing expo in Orland Park IL. 17 years ago. We spoke of his demonstration at the event, Smallmouth Bass, Trout, and life. I felt quite honoured to just chill with him and talk fish! I got the distinct impression he is a very kind, gentle man.

Joe wrote one of the best practical flyfishing books I have ever read, and he autographed my copy. The title is "On the Stream with Joe Humphreys." I had the pleasure of telling him how much I liked his book at a flyfishing show. He is a fine human being.

For those who lack the imagination to understand why some would dislike hooking an animal by its lips and subjecting it to a life or death fight only for mere pleasure...well....you may lack the imagination and understanding that make individuals like Joe so unique. Personally, I live on the fly and stream for days at a time and love that most do not.

Beautiful brown! I took a clinic from Joe many years ago, and thought he was great. Seeing him catch this huge trout in this tiny stream is quintessential Joe Humphreys. And wonderful videography as well, btw. Just an observation… in this video we see the net man almost lose the fish by stabbing the net forward. I’ve seen so many people lose great fish this way! Fish see the net coming and invariably thrash to avoid it. Instead of stabbing, lay your net in the water and hold it still. Lead the fish over the motionless net and THEN lift it.

Bunch of fishing dudes and film crew sneaking through the bush in remote location hoping to film Joe catch a behemoth for his new movie " fishing with Joe". Oh what a surprise! Joe hooks a corn fed hatchery giant with great skill! Joe's trusty guide observing his great mentor with awe and admiration waiting nervously with his trusty musky net! 🤣

I'll agree with you. I appreciate Joe and what he's done for fly fishing, without question. He's a legend. Getting a bunch of flat brimmers to come photograph a pellet pig is a bit weird though. He's 90 some years old though, he can do what he wants.
