FLY FISHING AS THERAPY ... thankful for this nice day out on the river

FLY FISHING AS THERAPY
Never thought I'd be making a video like this one .... But, I guess sometimes life doesn't go according to plan. I am thankful for family, friends, and fly fishing to help me get through this really difficult time.
Many of the fish I caught on this day were from flies that my son Niko tied for me earlier this Summer. He did a great job. We love you Niko, and miss you more than could imagine. Love, Dad

Dustin, first off, I’m really sorry to hear of your loss and glad you found some peace in fly fishing. It’s honestly unreal how many people have shared their stories with me since my son’s passing. And they’ve all been incredibly supportive and helpful as we try and get through this. I guess I never expected that, and it just goes to show I’m not the only one going thru a tough loss ... and that there’s still a lot of good in this world. So your comment means a ton, and I really appreciate you not only taking the time to watch the video, but to take time out of your day to share your story and experience 🙏🏻

My thoughts and prayers be with you and your family. Your videos have inspired me to finally learn how to fly fish. God only knows you have inspired many more, keep up the amazing work! There isn't nothing like being in the Colorado wilderness; weather it be fly fishing a beautiful stream or skiing in the backcountry to put stuff in perspective and finding your center.. Just something about our state brings a warm smile to my face, even out on the prairie. I pray you find what you are looking for. May God be with you.

Man, what a tribute. Your son would be proud. Cherish those memories, keep fishing because that’s all we can do in these instances. I fish for my cousin Cory who we lost at 23 last year. His brother, my cousin Dale and I fish all the time. We always see an Eagle every time we fish, a way we know Cory is watching over. Much love to you and your family. Thank you for making this video. ❤️🙏

Hi Matthew, thanks so much for watching my video and for sharing your own experiences and story. I'm so sorry for your loss of Cory. He was taken far too soon and that is just so sad. My 5th grade teacher made us recite 2 things every morning and it stuck with me all these years. The first was of course the Pledge of Allegiance. The second was a simple phrase "Life isn't always fair." Kinda brutal message to learn as a 10 year old ... but she was right, and the earlier you learn that in life, the more you can be prepared for those punches life throws your way. Nothing could've fully prepared me for this one, and we wish so badly that we could just turn back time and get him back. But, we are where we are, and have to keep moving forward. It's my goal to be there for my family, help them through this, and always remember my son's memories and carry on his spirit. If I can do that, I think I've succeeded somehow in all of this. Sorry for the long winded reply, but as someone who has lost a loved one recently, I'm sure you can relate. Next time I'm out on the water, I'm definitely gonna be looking for that eagle in honor of Cory. Thanks again for sharing your story Matthew. Take care my friend, dan

Kyle, thanks so much for the kind words. And, it's kinda incredible how much that day out on the water helped me. At home, I have to be the strong one ... helping out my wife and younger son. I have to be the responsible one, the one that keeps the household moving along, and the one that tries to stay positive even in the toughest of times. It's the only way and I'm happy to accept that responsibility. But on this day, I was able to be alone. Just me ... and it's amazing the tidal wave of new emotions that hit me. For the first time, I was allowed to be sad, upset, mad, and lets just face it ... weak. It was honestly the first time I felt like I could be any of those things safely. So, like any sane person, I talked to myself a lot that morning. I talked a lot to my son. We had good "conversation." And it was healing in ways I honestly never expected. Truly amazing what getting outside, and doing some fly fishing can mean to a person. I suspect many people have these kinds of moments when they fly fish, and that's a big big part of the allure. Thank you again for the support. Means a ton to myself and my family. dan

Life can change in a split second, and I’m facing that harsh reality right now. We are hanging in there, but it has definitely been a long couple of months. Thank you so much for the kind words and hope that you’re flooding cleanup hasn’t been too terrible! Really appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment and hope we can meet up one day whenever the world of travel opens up and becomes a bit easier!! Take care, dan

@@WhatMyLensSees One thing I'm noticing in dealing with my problems is the bigger your problem is the more people want to tell you about their problems. It's kind of weird. I think on some level they are trying to empathize with you but I'm finding it really annoying tying to deal with my own stuff and everyone is telling me about their problems. So... I thought you'd be interested to hear that one of my big losses in the flood were all of my fly tying books. :-) keep your chin up kiddo.
