HIKING WYOMING .. Summiting Medicine Bow Peak .. tallest mountain in the Snowy Range .. 12,018 feet
I sort of got away from hiking. Not exactly sure why. But, over the past 5 years, just haven't done much of it. Thank goodness my son has decided he wants to hike. He's re-energized me, and hiking is BACK!! In my 20's and 30's, I explored so many places across the West, but I had never made it up to the Snowy Mountain Range just West of Laramie, Wyoming. So, Alex and I set off for a quick trip with our aim being the summit of the tallest mountain in the Snowy's: Medicine Bow Peak.
We spent the night in Laramie at one of the hotel's near the university. Had a nice "Chili's" dinner and went to see the latest Minions movie. Next morning we woke up early so that we could get to Marie Lake West Trailhead by sunrise. Glad we did, because we were able to witness some spectacular alpenglow painted across the hills we were about to climb. Trail from Marie Lake is in great shape, and it's just a little 4 miles from TH to the summit of Medicine Bow. At the summit, you'll get views that are just out of this world. Surprisingly, we didn't run into another soul on the way up, and met our first person along the trail at the summit. Great fella from St Louis who was also hiking for the first time in quite awhile.
We thought about doing the loop but saw there was a snowfield crossing, so decided to just head back down the same way we came up. Safety first, especially when my son is with me.
I took a timewarp from my chest mounted GoPro to capture the entire way up. This makes up a good part of the video and may be helpful for anyone trying to better understand what the trail is like in mid-July. Amazing that 3 hours of hiking can be condensed down to right around 14 minutes. Hope it's helpful for those considering hiking the peak from this trailhead.
We had an amazing day, and always thankful for these wild places we are able to visit so close to home. Look for more hiking videos in the future. Alex definitely has caught the bug ;) Thanks as always - dan

Appreciate it Chris! Definitely a great spot and one we will certainly be back to for more than just a day hike. Can't even imagine if the Snowy's were located just outside of Denver how busy they'd be!

Thank you for making the video. I turned the sound down when I was watching. That is perhaps the most annoying music I have ever heard.
