FLY FISHING COLORADO ... Catching feisty Spring trout in the Colorado Rockies

FLY FISHING COLORADO ... Catching feisty Spring trout in the Colorado Rockies
Felt really good to get back out there and do some fly fishing! Spring is definitely here in the Colorado Rockies and the trout have woken up from their Winter slumber! Lots of great action and hungry fish made for an unforgettable 2 day getaway to Northwestern Colorado. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did :) Thanks as always for watching!

    That tailwater is amazing to say the least and you killed it! I love the fact that there’s brook trout in there, which most tailwaters don’t have them. Always fun to run into them and the few brown trout in there between all the rainbows! Good fishing man!

    Hi Dan, I always enjoy your videos and the humble approach you take. You are a great fisherman. What is the black blob on your line I am seeing t/o the video? For instance, at the 5:37 mark. Also, how often are your shortening up your rig and fishing mid column (weight NOT ticking bottom)? All the best.

  • @WhatMyLensSees

    @WhatMyLensSees

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey there Chet, really appreciate that man! I’m learning every time out ... and the fish are still teaching me many lessons for sure :) But really appreciate the kind words! The black blob was my thingamabobber indicator that I was using on that particular day. I try to use either black or clear most of the time to be as stealthy as possible. As for your second question, I’m using a triple nymph rig pretty much 💯 of the time, so I’m always trying to reach just near the bottom ... and then I get a couple “water levels” up from bottom with my other flies on the rig. I published another video recently called fly fishing for beginners ... and in that video, I talk thru my typical rig setup ... if you haven’t seen it, could definitely be helpful. I will say that on warm afternoons, trout will sometimes move into the faster water/riffles to eat. In those cases, I do try and lighten up and shorten up my rig because there’s no need to get so deep in those shallow, faster waters. Hope that all helps and if any other questions, definitely send my way and I’ll do my best to answer. Thanks again for the channel support! dan

    @@WhatMyLensSees Thanks for taking the time to provide that level of detail. Very helpful. I need to try a black indicator. I've used clear and had one of my best days using it but haven't done a comparison and was mainly contributing it to presentation and luck. It's got to help with finicky tailwater fish. Watched the beginner's guide video. Great content. TY. Would love to see one on presentation in the distant future. I get the impression you're a big proponent on speed, depth and direction trumps fly selection. All the best and keep up the great work!!

    Chet Conlon definitely think presentation is the most important by a country mile! And thanks for the suggestion, I’ll definitely try and figure out a way to build that into one of my future videos. But my initial thoughts are short, controlled casts with smooth natural drifts due to your position in the river primarily and mending secondarily are the keys to a productive day. Really appreciate your support of my channel and thanks for watching the other video. Hoping I can release another one tomorrow that contains another little tip or two along with more fishing action 😉 thanks again Chet!

    Really neat video. You certainly found some hungry spring trout. Glad you got a chance to thaw out!! I agree, sometimes it is hard to adjust to the conditions while we are fishing. Too easy to think the fish weren't biting because they weren't hitting the same lures from last week.

    Such a huge difference between fly fishing in the Winter and fly fishing in the Spring. Might as well be 2 completely different sports as far as I'm concerned! And totally agree with your comment .... I have to remind myself that last week, or even yesterday don't matter. Things change that quickly on the water, and you have to be willing to take the small amount of time and energy to make adjustments so that you can have productive days on the water! Absolutely gorgeous stream and landscape and big healthy fish. Way to stick with it and make the adjustments. Rainbows just love those attractors, awesome Brookie too. Those spots were loaded with fish. I like the different nymphing challenge, I just nymph but without an indicator, so like a combination of both styles. Thanks for sharing , I’d love to fish that stream someday, wild or stocked? But really doesn’t matter to me, I can appreciate them both. Well done!👍🏻

    I always get so caught up in the “I don’t want to waste time” mentality that I often times don’t stop, and take time to make adjustments. It’s something I’m really trying to remind myself of .... because pretty much every time I do take the time, good things happen! I’m also trying to force myself to Euro more often because I’ve had some incredible success with that setup. Trouble is, it’s either really on ... or really off. Oh well, guess I’ll get there one of these days :) as for your question, I think it’s a combo of stocked and wild fish. They stock the rainbows from what I can tell ... think it has to do with whirling disease and getting trout that are more resistant to that. Really appreciate the great comment and channel support! Dan

    Hey there Rhys, thanks for the great feedback. And you have a great eye for the details! I changed the indicator to a bright orange for a bit, because I was planning to put my zoom lens on so I could show "a strike" clearly. Was gonna be a small informational bit aimed more for beginnners. But honestly, I found it too hard to film and fish that particular bit all on my own. Gonna have to go with someone else, put down my fly rod, and focus on just filming someone else with a nice bright indicator so I can follow it thru the drift and hopefully capture that exact moment in 120fps so it's easy to see in slomo. On the hotspot topic, I'm really trying to make my videos nowadays about the experience and adventure ... so if I were to include location specifics ... it kinda takes away from those elements. Glad you're liking my direction and fully agree with how you said it .... "stumbling upon them" enhances the experience so much more! Really appreciate your comment, and channel support my friend.

    Tom, really appreciate your comment. And glad you enjoyed it. Was definitely a great trip and the fish really helped me out to make a fun, entertaining video! I found the worm to work well in the mornings ... but by 10am or so, I was catching most of them on small midges and emerger patterns. The gray RS2 was probably the most productive fly from 10am onwards and I think that's what most of those fish took in the pocketwater. As for numbers, I'm not entirely sure, but it was a LOT! First version of my video was 25 minutes, and I cut out 10 minutes of hooking/netting a lot more fish because I thought to myself, this is absurd and honestly how much can one watch of this 🤣Again, thank you for the kind words and channel support my friend.
