Flux core is great for thicker steel and where you dont mind cleaning up more after. For car panels, gas and 0.6mm (0.025")solid wire is the go. Flux core welds hotter and blows holes in panels too easy. Don't bother with throwaway bottles though because its terrible economy. I've welded large sections in cars replacing crash damage with flux core and others with gas- now I have gas I'll never flux core car panels again. The amount of work difference is huge. Preperayion is everything so cut your replacement piece to fit perfectly, then you make minimal warpage by not having to weld gaps. I, like Billy taught myself how to weld. I however know better than to not listen to tips from actual expert welding videos.

Anyone can. Just make sure it's full and there's no air left in the top of the tank. Liquid gasoline isn't explosive, only the vapors. I don’t try to explain it to the guys who think that all the answers are in the Welding book written 50 years ago. I regulate the intensity of the arc with the stick out. If you watch my video where I’m welding 26 gauge steel, which is the thinnest sheet metal that I know of, my stick out is around 2 inches. If you watch the video closely, you often see the arc start and the stick out turn red. That redness is the wire reducing the violent arc and allowing me to weld that super thin metal. “Real” weldors can quack all they want about this or that, but I include destructive testing to PROVE my point😉😉

Switched to flux core for general use in repairs and light fabrication a few years ago when I moved into the sticks and didn't have time to get set up with gas before doing an urgent job. Been using it ever since and don't see much difference in the results versus MIG/MAG except splatter and of course the welds aren't shiny. And you can realistically take it up a pole and weld in a hurricane.
I need to weld up floor pans in my old Jeep Cherokee. If I can make this method work, it should help me out a lot. I know I can't run a bead on automotive sheet metal with flux core, but it's all I have and my budget doesn't have room for MIG. On the upside, it doesn't have to be pretty, and I'll be sealing it well afterwards.
For all the welders out there, this is not structural and when welding body panels you have to do little arcs all the way around as not to pull the metal in weird directions due to shrinkage from thermal stress. This is exactly how to do it when doing body work.
It's obvious when someone has no idea what they're doing. This is not one of those guys so trying to tell him how to do his job just makes you look like a dip shit. Maybe just learn something or just write it off that people do things differently than you.

Flux core works, but i prefer MIG. The only reason i say this is because flux core creates a lot of spatter on your piece which then means more grinding and sanding, and searching for each little spatter later. MIG at the appropriate heat setting leaves very little if any spatter at all. Looks good though, great work!

Bondo Billy never learned how to use a mig properly- notice he has at least an inch of wire sticking out past the tip. He'd save so much time using gas with the clean up afterwards alone. You fill gaps with weld- you warp the panel more, leaving more panel eork to correct. He's been welding sheetmetal badly for 42 years.

I learned it to weld with Oxy acetylene back in the early 80s . The only other welding I've done was trailside welding when out 4 by 4ing . My Jeep had a 260 amp alternator and dual batteries . All I needed to weld was a set of jumper cables and a piece of welding rod . Welding driveshafts back together using patches cut out of pickup boxes . Sleeving broken tie rod arms . Reattaching shackle mounts and such . Most vehicles don't come with even a 150 amp alternator . But if you have an older vehicle that did have one of those 260 amp alternators . Most anything I could weld with just the amps from the alternator and a single battery . And if I wanted to I could turn my dual battery system into a 24 volt battery . And 260 amps times 24 volts is 6,240 watts of metal melting electricity .

@OldBondoBilly No, you are tacking, not stitching. Stitching is small line welding in series to prevent overheating, and you have to remove the slag and clean it each time you join stitches. You literally made dots, that is tack welding, or overlapping tack welds.

@teufelhund3801. You don’t know the definition of dumbass, or you’d shut up. A “tack” weld is a non-penetrating, surface weld used while mocking up panels for proper fitment. It is meant to be easy to break if panel re-alignment is required. A “stitch” weld is a full penetration burst meant to achieve fusion between the panels without excessive heat transfer. Lots of stupid people misinterpret the two, and the difference. Did I mention that you are a lots of?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yes, make sure your polarity is set for flux core.
Doesn't make a whole lot of difference with sheet, bc mig or flux, you still have to mostly fill in with repeated spot welds and grind it afterwards. Thicker than sheet tho, the mig will look better. And if I'm a but less worried about looks, I like stick for the thicker stuff
