My mom always made cakes in pressure cookers! In India, ovens are not commonplace at all so she would have to use a mold in those old school steel pressure cookers with the little whistle and all!

I am so glad that you did this I have been making cakes in rice cookers for years in fact I bought one of the high-end cuckoo rice cookers last year and have been making cakes in it ever since I'm glad you got to experience it and I hope you continue playing around with the method and everything. I should also note that making brownies in a rice cooker is easy and a total no-brainer especially if you like the crust around the outside!

I just got an Instant Pot and have been exploring its possibilities, it's kind of fun. I want to try a steamed pudding in it for Xmas next year, and it's great for beans and soup stock. Greatest success so far is consistent results doing soft boiled eggs, after some experimentation I've come up with the perfect amount of time to get the whites all set and the yolks mostly not :) If I were to get one of these units, I would hope it has a "sielnt" setting, I would not under any circumstance want an appliance speaking to me, it would drive me batty and I'd end up yelling at it to get to the point...

I got given a super used Cuckoo by a college classmate moving back to Korea a few years ago. Despite being beat up it worked sooo well and absolutely spoiled me. It only had the Korean voice but I always felt so happy to hear it tell me hello (basically all the Korean I know lol) and hear the little songs. Sadly it stopped working a few months ago and I’ve haven’t been able to replace it because I’m still rona broke. 😩😭

I always hear people (typically from the States) talking about how cold it is. I love hearing the exact temperature. I live only about a half hour up from the States border into Manitoba, Canada. Today was -38 Celcius. We had a solid week where every day was -45 or even a few degrees colder at times. Frostbite could set in on exposed skin in just minutes. I realise it's all relative, but I can't help but go "Oh honey, if only you knew what this kind of cold was..." 😂

I came across a similar one (by Cutchen) at a thrift store for $4.00. I think they thought it was a bread maker machine and tried to sell it as that, but I knew that it was a rice cooker, but after researching the thing, it was a 'pressure jar cooker' and it looks just like the Cuckoo one. It's the US model, but I haven't been able to figure out how to get it to speak English, and I could not find a manual online outlining how to do it. Fortunately, the menu is still in English. I've only made rice it in (and it does a great job at that!), but it has a ton of options in it's menu for things to try, I guess I could try making a cake in it.

I have an idea for your sponge cake that I like doing with angel food cakes. Split the batter among 3-4 bowls. Add 2-3 drop of food coloring to each bowl. Then either put the batter in the rice bowl as layers, or drop a different color next to each other by the spoonful. Your kids will love how it comes out, as will you. Just drizzle a simple powdered sugar/milk icing over the top will finish it to perfection. ☺🥮😉

This is so cool! I've actually wanted a Cuckoo for quite a while now. I started watching Korean TV pretty extensively in around 2015. By which I mean actual, broadcast TV here in the U.S., on local Korean-language channels, with commercials, many of which were for Korean products. Cuckoo had a series of ads in those days featuring famous (male) film and TV stars, specifically Won Bin and Lee Jong Suk, among others, so they were ... eye-catching to say the least. But then I started to think, wow, that's ALSO a really nice rice cooker! But the commercials were all in Korean and I could never figure out how to order one from the States with U.S. currency. I knew they'd be pretty pricey, but it's actually not as expensive as I thought, and with the discount, I may just shell out for one.
