Flowers of the Forest
Ойын-сауық
This #SlowAirSunday, Flowers of the Forest is played with meaning and great respect for the many who have fought in Battles and paid the ultimate price. The act of giving your life for another is a true act of Bravery and heroism. Today I am dedicating this Slow Air to two men that paid the ultimate sacrifice to save another. In honor of Firefighter Patrick Jones, age 25 and Captain Ray Figueroa age 35 were killed while fighting the Porterville Library Fire on February 18, 2020. On February 28th many gathered to honor these two heroes. My husband and I were honored to be in the Pipe and Drum ranks with Firefighters from Canada, and all over California to walk the families of the fallen into the ceremony. Our hearts go out to the families, the Porterville Fire Department and the City of Porterville during this hard time. We mourn with you.
After leaving the ceremony we passed by these fields of flowering fruit trees and felt inspired to play this mournful Air in memory and dedicated to these two firefighters. May they rest in peace.

Tune History:
The song, written in Scots, is also known as The Floo'ers o' the Forest (are a' wede away) and describes the grief of women and children at the loss of their young men. In some ways the song echoes the Old Welsh poem by Gododdin about a similar defeat in about 600.
Powerful solo bagpipe versions of the song are used at services of remembrance, funerals, and other occasions; many in the Commonwealth know the tune simply as "The Lament" which is played at Remembrance Day or Remembrance Sunday ceremonies to commemorate war dead.
Flowers of the Forest, or The Flooers o the Forest, is an ancient Scottish folk tune commemorating the defeat of the Scottish army of James IV at the Battle of Flodden in September 1513. Although the original words are unknown, the melody was recorded c. 1615-1625 in the John Skene of Halyards Manuscript as "Flowres of the Forrest", although it might have been composed earlier.

Just plain beautiful , Flowers Of The Forest. The Lament. I had this played by a piper at my wife's funeral seven years ago. It gets you in the heart . RIP my dear .
We called this tune "The Lament," but we all knew what it was really called. "And the pipes played 'Flowers of the Forest" as they lowered you down."

Tears to those who listen ...
This tune was played at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle for the funeral of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, it was a deeply moving as his coffin is slowly lowered to the Royal Vault when the piper played this tune, it was indeed a poignant moment and a fitting tribute as well.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

I think those few lines may be the most moving words in all poetry or prose.🪖❤️

The same.
Your description of this wonderful tune explains why this song in particular hits home with me. The sound vibrations are very strong, and the connection is undeniable. My heart, too, goes out to those brave souls who paid the ultimate price. We are fortunate to have someone like you to help keep the memory of the strong ones alive, so that we may not forget there are those in this world who care. Many blessings!!

It's a call to spiritual warfare. As the Scot's used the pipes to call the clans to confront & fight the Romans & later the English, with this hymn it is now the Christians battle cry to come together & confront the adversary, Satan!
One of my all time favourite pipe tunes. Easy enough until a lump comes to the throat while playing it. Last time I played it was at my brother-in-law’s funeral.
Played at my wife's funeral by a proper Scotsman, Thank you Craig.
Can't listen to this, without crying. It is a universal song of sadness.
She's a most talented piper...beautiful...

I jumped when i saw you standing in a California almond orchard. The prettiest blossoms in early spring....swept away by spring rains...I ran wild through many acres until I was lost somewhere deep in the orchard. Thanks for sharing your gift.
Thank You for your beautiful music. May God Bless you. Love and Light to everyone and everything!
A lament for the loss of king James and 10000 others at the battle of Flodden in 1513

Once again I have to say : BRILLIANT, with your own touch. Old Air, also called “ The Liltin”, appears under this tittle in the Skene Collection, a lute or mandore manuscript of c. 1615-20. The lament makes reference to the Battle of Flodden Field, fought in Northumberland on the 9th of September, 1513, when the Scots army of James IV was soundly defeated by the English Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey. Many Scottish noblemen were killed in combat, Earl of Lennox, Earl of Argyll….even the same King James. “Flowers of the Forest” refers to the Scots who came from Ettrick Forest. The English Army was under the command of my countrywoman “ Catalina of Aragon”, wife of King Henry VIII.
J'aime bien votre uniforme votre kilte aussi 😉🙂 à la musique aussi
Incredible! So deep and mystical. We are having a piper play this next week at Dad's burial.

Poet Jean Elliot wrote lyrics for the ancient tune sometime about 1757. Her refrain is haunting, “The Flooers of the Forest are a’ wede awa’ “. Translated from Scots dialect, it means, “The Flowers of the Forest are all wilted away.” (Tue 21 Sept 2021 11h38)
When this is played at the hallowed ground of the Menin Gate you are aware of the tens of thousands who have no known grave. #wewillrememberthem
