Flow States Deconstructed: How to Master Ultra Instinct Part One

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The full blog post: www.thebioneer.com/?p=2088&pre...
Flow states/hypofrontality, are a state of 'optimal human performance'. This is when all distraction falls aside and you experience complete focus. Time dilates, you can react with super-human instincts and you perform at your very best. This is you at 100%.
In this video, I examine the nature of flow states to help us better understand and achieve them. For example: what is the difference between flow in creativity and in athletic performance (the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and medial prefrontal cortex is what!). What does heart rate variability and coherence have to do with flow (possibly lots) and how do special forces operatives stay calm under intense pressure?
This is part one of a two-part series, inspired by ultra instinct and the events of DBS. In part two, I'll be using the information in this video to examine the very best flow hacks! Stay tuned.

After a year an a half of meditation and training my body to function while in flow state I can now state that it is possible to “master it” I’m naturally a very calm and collected person clearing my mind is very simple and once you reach what I call “flow state mastery” you feel quite literally divine and like you are no longer physically with the world it’s an interesting phenomenon I wanted to share.

Just recently discovered this "flow state", something I've always referred to as "absolute determination". I've been through it many times in my life, most noticably in competitive situations. While in this state you are the master of your reality. I've overcome astronomical odds doing this more than once, so I have no doubt about it being legitimate. For me, getting into this state is rare. First, you must already be very experienced in whatever you're trying to accomplish. The more the better. Second, you have to have an extreme desire to achieve whatever it is your mind is set on. I mean you have to reach a point where you will not even consider failure, it's not a possibility in your mind. Every cell in your body believes it. I've gotten into this state usually by failure/lack of results/shame. I've practiced, worked, tried over and over again, never getting the results I wanted, then finally one day I get fed up, and an overwhelming urge to do what I know I can do comes over me. It happens like a switch, just all of the sudden you're in this state. When you hit this state you're consumed with what you are going to do. You're going to accomplish the thing you have been failing at. You know it, you feel it, there is no doubt at all and nothing else matters. Your thoughts do not interrupt you. There are no distractions, it's not possible to be distracted. All of your focus and all of your being is zeroed in on the task. You operate on autopilot. It's like the things that have held you back, prevented you from accomplishing what you want fall away, and there is only achievement. One example to maybe show I'm not full of shit:I began playing online poker years ago, had been playing for under a year, but I was into it enough that I really learned the game well. But I hadn't ever even gotten close to getting the results I wanted. There was a particular tournament I played every night, always had around 10,000 entrants in it, which made it astronomically hard/unlikely to finish around the top, much less win. I'd played it dozens of times, never getting better than top 500 or so. Well one night I'm watching a pro play another tournament, and he's dominating the other players with his style. I was totally captivated by it. Then something overcomes me, I suddenly had this overwhelming feeling of "I can do that", I know I can do that. I go to sleep, wake up next day and I'm consumed with the feeling of winning that tournament tonight. All day that's all I thought of, how I knew for a fact that I'd win it. Not once was there ever a second of doubt. (Keep in mind this tournament required unbelievable odds to overcome to even make the final table) Well that night I start playing in it and I was in a zone. Everything was clicking, I was making play after play, getting insanely lucky over and over, I couldn't be stopped. 8 hours later it's me and 3 other players left. I eventually get knocked out by some bad luck but I finish 4th out of over 10,000 people. Didn't win but to get 4th, to will myself to 4th place was no coincidence. I've had several other situations just like this, in different areas of sports and life. One thing to note, I always had a strong belief that I COULD accomplish these things, but something was preventing it. Getting into the flow removed those barriers. I believe some of the world's greatest minds, in sports and life, have either mastered getting into this state, or were just naturally prone to being in it. Amazing thing. PS: it's as if reality conforms/manipulates to your desire, your will, when you're in this state. Call me crazy, but I've considered it could be the most powerful force in the universe.

I've been able to enter flow state a couple of times in sports like basketball and tennis. When it happen, my brain complete shut off with no thoughts and planning. I only execute moves using muscle memories. However, one thing that pose a problem is that if you try to do fancy moves or techniques that you never learn or master before, you will be kicked out of the state. So an advice is that master the basics first, and let your instinct do the rest.

My first time noticing I was in flow was in a sparring session. After taking a punch, then kinda snapping into the fight, feeling focused and never getting hit again. I felt nothing in terms of danger since it was sparring, and also had more fun. It's almost like your mind is keeping up with your reactions and surprising how reactive your body is.

Mr. Fag first, by sparring a Lot. That way my instinctive reactions to a punch or kick or anything got refined. When I got my "standard defense code overwriten" I just practiced letting my body react on it's own. Not thinking "a punch/kick is comming, how do I react" but letting your body defend itself is the mind exclusive part. You need to forget everything and have absolute consentration on the fact that you are fighting, you need to trick yourself into thinking you are in a life/death situation, and then you just let your perfected reflexes do their work. Basically what this is all about is learning how to react on instinct, and the way you make it "ultra" is by changing your animal/natural/genetic instincts to fight refined ones

The flow state I use daily is more akin to being aware of everything around you but not focused on any one thing. Focus to me means tunnel vision, good for drawing, writing or being creative in general but terrible for combat and not what you would call ultra instinct. Like Bruce Lee talking about water, Robert Jordan talks about the flame and the void. Picture a candle flame in your mind, then feed all thought, emotions, feelings into it until the flame expands and you are within the white center. Calm completely aware yet not focused on anything, to me this is the flow state.

It be nice to see you incorporate the likes of individuals such as Ayrton Senna and Micheal Schumacher. Arguably the greatest Formula 1 race car drivers. Nevertheless how these men push themselves to the limit, often sweating off 3kg of their body weight over the course of the race says alot. These drivers need to be fit to be less susceptible to fatigue induced lapses of concentration. Ayrton Senna once described in his own way how he felt like he had entered another dimension of consciousness during the race. Ultra Instinct. You are a man who likes to research. If you ever dig a little into how these drivers prepare themselves and the unique ways in which they exercise, you’ll be quite inspired. Maybe you can do a video on Ayrton Senna and Micheal Schumacher one of these days.

I've found that it can be possible to take a flow state you've achieved while performing one task, like completing a school assignment, and apply it to another task, like a creative project, as long as they are done in fairly quick succession and there isn't a significant break between them that causes you to go out of the flow state. I wonder if it is possible to induce a flow state through focusing on some simple "flow warm-up" task, and then immediately carry the state over to the task you want to perform. If there are different kinds of flow states, I can see different warm-ups working better than others though.

  • @TheBioneer

That's an awesome idea and I guess it makes sense - the neurochemicals are primed and your focus is honed. I wonder what would be a great 'warm up' activity? Meditation is a good option but is time consuming. Some games are very flow-inducing (Furi in particular!). What method works best for you?

  • @insanecandycane1283

Interesting, I'll have to check out Furi. Aside from some real challenging task, I've found a couple strange exercises seem to work: shifting my eyes around very quickly to follow some imaginary ball or dot darting about my vision, or "fencing" quickly against an imaginary opponent. I think this works because these tasks are "challenging" for your mind, but you actually are controlling the level of challenge so they are doable. They also require your mind to keep reacting quickly. Though you might find yourself in an awkward position if someone walks in on you!

@@insanecandycane1283 You're bringing up something very interesting. Yesterday as I was struggling to write my thesis I thought about using a different app than Microsoft Word because maybe I was getting tunnel vision every time I went back my thesis in Word. So I read about Wattpad and went to the website. Before writing a chapter of my thesis I thought let me first try it out. Maybe it is not for me or I'll get a sudden notification that I have reached my word limit and have to pay or whatever. So I started with just writing nonsense non-stop about whatever I was thinking in that moment. It didn't make sense. But while I was doing this.. I started to really enjoy it.. I started to write things that made sense... my vocabulary improved... my typing got more accurate and I almost made no mistakes... then I started to type even faster to challenge myself... and that also went really well.. and then I started about more complicated things.. and then write without looking at the screen... (I mention this because I quite often make mistake while typing and have to look at the keyboard sometimes)... So that was my ''flow warm-up'' I guess!! And then I quickly moved on to actually writing a chapter for my thesis until I had to leave because the library closed. So yeah that definitely is great idea!!

Or corny, but the few times I've managed to get into a flow state while playing a competitive shooter, like say, Overwatch are easily some of the best games I've ever had. I've pulled shit off when I was in a flow state that I would NEVER be able to pull off normally. Sometimes, I'm not even sure what exactly happened until after the game ends and I watch the recording. It's hard to get into the state, I've only managed it a few times and I spend hundreds of hours in these games. But it's one hell of an experience when you do.

Qnd i try to use it without looking at the ball, atcleadt not focusing on it... I end up hitting it every time qnd dodging it every time too without thinking and without focusing on it... So i end up getting waaaay better reflexes... Now... When the ball is comming its a punch when its on the distqnce its a chin... Wo i end up punching without thinking with perfect precission and dodging without thinking perfectly too... So, its not really "flowstate" but helps achieving flowstate Hope it helps...

Similar to taekeondo) i won by dodging and counterpunching (wich i never learned, just dodge, see an opening and hit it all at the same time) i mean... After watching this video, I kept occasionally dropping things (clumsy me!) but my arms would move all on their own and before I even knew what happened I had caught it, or my knee would shoot out and trap the object between it and another object, let's say a wall then then I would come to my senses and use my hand to pick it up. For the first 2-3 times this happened I would say to myself "So this is the power of Ultra Instinct?" but jokingly of course. However this has now happened more than 15 times and I still haven't broke my streak. I have never dropped something without dropping it. Once I was holding three eggs with two hands, the third one dropped and I caught it between the two other eggs and none of them broke!

Sounds good, and the explanations of the brain functions sounds reasonable, but how to do it? I cannot consciously control my brain chemicals and processes just by knowing what is supposed to happen during flow. So, from what I hear, I should try to make myself stressed, but at the same time keep an inner calm and sense of control?

What i didn't understand is if Ultra Instinct can be useful for stuff which aren't related to physically protecting yourself. Does it help to keep yourself in a balanced pace when it comes to multi-tasking at work? Does it help you focus on analysing information from computer documents and work calmly on projects? I'm usually living in a pretty distracting environment, and its the same at my workplace, so i hoped that i could improve the way my mind works, and not get distracted like in most cases.

Ok, so a flow state to me us this: 1. Your reflective brain turns off. You're not considering or thinking or making decisions, you're just 'doing'. 2. You're 100% engrossed in the activity, but without any specific focus.. as things change you respond in an automatic way 3. It's in some way very peaceful (maybe because of (1)). 4. You're body feels good and intune and even if you're tired, it's responding well and not lagging 5. It feels very natural (indeed I wonder if animals feel this alot, and it's just our abstracting mind that prevents this).

One example being one of the minigames in Ring Fit Adventure where you press the ring in as many times as possible within a certain amount of time, my normal score is usually 80-100 yet one day I suddenly go overdrive and get a score of 132 which I have yet to beat.

You get used to it after a while but every now and then I come across where my body just doesn’t wanna cooperate. Times like that I stop for a quick second, take a deep breath and power right through with no distractions. It’s an amazing feeling while you’re in it tho. I wonder if there's a correlation between IQ and ability to turn on flow state. When I was younger I was in a constant flow state, except for social situations because I wasn't properly socialized before I was 5 so i get mad anxiety. But whenever I have to take a test in school or something I can just turn it on and suddenly everything I heard or learned in the class would just flow onto the paper, it's how I've gotten through Highschool without studying for a test in my life... Except for my AP Chem exam because i was smoking too much weed when i should have been doing my homework. Ya live and ya learn. Anyway, my IQ is somewhere between 130 and 145, and playing videogames and other things like school, I have been able to just enter a sort of flow state. Like clearing my mind and just focusing when I want to is completely natural to me. Anybody experience something similar? Or not? idk. From what I understand, kids have a sort of natural tendency to be in a flow state, but it decreases as you get older. Maybe it has something to do with society teaching to constantly be aware of ourselves, and we shouldn't be. Or maybe I just never forgot the feeling so I can just do it? Thoughts?
