Flourish Tabs Vs. API Root Tabs - And Why Do You Need Root Tabs Anyway?

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Root tab.....Throwdown!! We are going to take a look at Flourish Tabs vs. API Root Tabs and point out the differences between the two. I've had a lot of success in using root tabs with pool filter sand, getting strong root systems and great plant growth.
There are differences in API Root Tabs and Flourish Tabs, and I'll point those out in the video. So, who wins the throw down? Are API Root Tabs better or are Flourish Tabs better? Of course that's a teaser. It's all in the video.

    Hello, your calculation for the number and placement of flourish tabs is off. It specifies a 4-6” radius. Meaning they cover an 8-12” diameter. Aka, they should be spaced 8-12” apart and a standard 2 gallon would only need 2-3. Their estimate for area covered, lies in the 4-5” radius range.

    I haven't used flourish; however, I tried breaking up the API tabs. Big mistake, it helped to create a suspended algea bloom which lasted for weeks. I did almost daily water changes and a blackout before the water column was normal again.

    If you supply sufficient fertz in a tank with gravel you can still grow plants..if anything gravel is the best substrate to use with root tabs as it allows the nutrients to travel to the roots with ease..But great video👍👍

    Greg - thanks for checking out the video and thanks for the kind words! Yes, I've tried gravel before, and this is only from my experience, but the plants always had a hard time rooting in it, though I'm sure finer gravel works well. Of course, always an option and root tabs certainly work. :) In my experience, I've just personally had more success and greater plant growth using pool filter sand or a substrate like ADA aquasoil, Seachem Flourite, or Fluval Stratum - #10 pool filter sand has always allowed my root tabs to spread widely underneath, but, there are many types of sand out there and a lot don't work, you are right!

    Thanks for the kind words! This is a great question. You'll have nutrients in the Seachem substrate, so I wouldn't use them right away...as the plants use the nutrients in the substrate, that's when the tabs will help...so I would just watch your plant growth...they should do great right away, and for a little while, maybe a few to several months - but if you start noticing any plant growth starting to stunt, or start to see some plants that looked great but start looking a little deficient, then I'd bring the tabs in 👍

    Do you have any thoughts on the use of clay in root tabs? To resolve the issue of the API tabs dissolving in the water column could you stuff them in empty pill casings like those used with the Osmocote balls?

  • @dmichaelsfishden

    @dmichaelsfishden

    7 жыл бұрын

    Rod - these are excellent questions. Thank you for the comment and for checking out the video. I'm no expert, but I can speak from my understanding and experience. The deal on clay - my experience with clay and my understanding of its true purpose is that it is great at binding nutrients from the water column and aquarium "mulm." Those balls of clay become quite fertile after some time, and as plant roots get near them, the nutrients are released to the plant roots. So there is definitely a value in using clay for that purpose, however, it will take awhile for the clay to become fertile, so I would recommend adding the clay, but also adding root tabs when your tank is new. A lot of people add clay to provide iron to plants, however, my understanding is that it only adds a small amount. To provide iron, you may be better off using API, Flourish, or Osmocote root tabs to provide iron in the correct chelated form. You can also dose liquid iron, which is also in the chelated form. Very good point with the API tabs!! Yes, you absolutely crush up the API tab and put it in an empty pill casing. Good thinking!! This is a great idea. Otherwise, you just have to put the tab in quickly and shove it down in the substrate with your finger. Hope all that helps!

    Thank you for the reply. I use inert gravel in my 2 tanks and consider myself more of a planted tank hobbyist than fish keeper. Although I realize how well they support plant growth I don't want to get involved with dirt substrate and was looking for a way to mimic its benefits without actually dirting my tanks. I have recently started seeing clay based root tabs being sold and was considering using them in small quantities and hope they won't cause issues when I move plants around. Some of these clay tabs have been supplemented with macro and micro nutrients and I may give these a try. Thanks for taking the time to give a detailed reply which allows me to make a better educated decision.

    Can you use just these to grow plants in plain gravel? My catfish dig around a lot is this a worry if they dig up the tablets?

  • @dmichaelsfishden

    @dmichaelsfishden

    5 жыл бұрын

    Violent Rainbow - conceptually, yes, you cat, but you hit right on the issue. I've tried this in the past with gravel back in the day and my problem was that my gravel granules were too big. The problem that can happen with gravel is that the root tabs, when they dissolve, displace into all the crevices between the gravel and start leaking up into the water column. Conceptually, this will work with gravel if the gravel granules are small enough and compact enough. With your catfish, it is also easier for them to disrupt gravel beds where the gravel granules are larger. The size of your gravel bed also plays a part. If it is an inch or inch and a half, you may be fine, but the tabs won't work well if the gravel bed is only half an inch thick. But just like many things in the hobby, we kind of rely on our own personal experience, so you might give it a try to see if the root tabs hold. Make sure to push them in about half way into the gravel bed, and inch away from the plant. You can also add some smaller gravel as a "topper" to your current gravel bed. That should help also. Sorry for such a long response, but the short answer is yes, the root tabs will help - your catfish shouldn't be able to dig up the tablets too much as long as you press them down halfway into your gravel bed 😀 Hope that helps!

    I’m going to grow a carpet of glosso’s in my 10 gallon tank for my two Bettas, I already bought the flourish to add nutrients to my eco-complete substrate which doesn’t have any. Do you suggest I buy both root tabs and Flourish, using the Flourish by my bigger plants and placing the root tabs around and inside the carpet so that every plant has the perfect amount of nutrients? Original it was my soil that needed nutrients so I didn’t think much of root tabs nor do I know the difference between the two. I also don’t want the glosso to grow tall because I want it to carpet the bottom so would it be best to use one of the two listed so that my plants don’t get to much of a boost or is it smart to use all. I’ll also have Amazon Swords, Anubias and possibly Java Fern with Moss Balls in my tank

  • @dmichaelsfishden

    @dmichaelsfishden

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey Miquel - It's not a bad idea to have both Flourish tabs and API root tabs, because the nutrient content is very different. I love the API tabs when you are starting plants because they give a big nitrogen boost - they are also easier to break up and selectively place around your tank, so I use them in hard to get places. I generally use the Flourish tabs for established plants because they have a more balanced selection of nutrients. Anubias will get its nutrients from the water column, as will the moss balls, so no worries with them about the tabs. The tabs will definitely help the Amazon Swords and the glosso. I think it's a nice strategy to use the Flourish tabs for your bigger plants and the API root tabs for the glosso - especially to get them started. Once everything is established, you really can use either one...maybe switch off a little. One tip on the glosso - whether it grows tall or widens out will depend a lot on your lighting. If you don't have strong enough lighting, it will grow tall to try to reach a light source. If you have strong enough light, it will spread out....hope all that helps! Let me know if I can help more down the line! Good luck and thanks for checking out the video!

    Pa.Fish Preacher (I love that, btw). This is a very good question. Here is the problem with API - as soon as you drop them in, they dissolve. And when they do, per my video, that is a lot of macros going into the water column. With regard to affecting parameters, they might. I've never tested that. In my experience, though, I've never seen much of a differential, however, you raise a very good point. Perhaps this is why DIY root tabs are preferred. Perhaps we should test this?

    Eric - I've had the same issues sometimes. The API tabs do start dissolving quickly. Definitely want to bury those fast and leave it be. It won't harm the fish, it's just money out the door when it dissolves in the water column. But if you can get them down there quickly, they do a nice job!

  • @almarma

    Wow! I didn't knew there're two kind of tabs for the substrate. I recently added plants to my stablished aquarium because I have a lot of algae and I like them too, but the algae is wining the fight right now and also the plants, since I got them, are really pale. They keep growing, but with a much lighter and pale green color, so I ordered yesterday some tabs from JBL (the 7 balls) and some liquid fertiliser. When they arrive I hope it changes and the plants can win the battle ;). Meanwhile, I'll check your other videos about fertilisers :). Thanks for your videos!

  • @dmichaelsfishden

    @dmichaelsfishden

    7 жыл бұрын

    Almarma - surprising right? There are a lot of root tabs out there, but you have to read the ingredients to know what your plants are being offered 👍 Please do watch the vids on fertilization and dosing. If you have an established aquarium, but getting algae, this could be a lighting problem, unless you are dumping too many nutrients in the tank. It's normal to have diatoms/brown algae in a newly established tank, but you shouldn't have that much problem with algae if its established. What lighting are you using? How long? And thanks for the kind words about the videos! Glad you enjoy them!

    You can but I wouldn't recommend it. In my experience annubias loves it but it is more of an algaecide. Anubias is the only things that has loved it. No problem using in your shrimp tank but when you start its hard to stop it. Everything acclimates to it. So if you decide to go for it, that's fine but you'll have to keep going. And you'll have some plant melt once you first start. Jury is still out on whether it is a good product and what it is actually for. I've had several conversations with Seachem about it. They aren't even sure what it is best for. So I can only share my experience with it. I've stopped using it but it made my Anubias pop. Melted my other plants until they acclimated to it. No effect on shrimp, fish, or inverts. Hope that helps!

  • @dmichaelsfishden

    @dmichaelsfishden

    7 жыл бұрын

    smorc655 - lol. Well, going "bonkers" isn't always a bad thing 👍 There isn't really any danger of overloading a bit on your Flourish tabs. The only thing that can happen is if you provide excessive nutrient content in the tank that can lead to extra algae growth. Your chemistry levels should still be fine - perhaps a small spike in Nitrate - but that's no big deal if it happens slowly. The Flourish tabs don't have a lot of Nitrogen content - they are more of a comprehensive tab. You should be all good once the plants start soaking up the good stuff in the tabs 😋 Congrats on getting the 29 loaded!!

    DarksAquatics - A great question. With Java Fern and Java Moss you have two plants that are rhizome plants, and root tabs won't help here since these plants are not in the substrate. What you want to use for java fern and java moss are fertilizers for the water column. These are fertilizers like Seachem Flourish, NilocG's THRIVE, Aquarium Co-Op's easy green. The rhizome will absorb those ferts through the water column. If you don't have a lot of plants, Seachem's Flourish will work just fine. Let me know if I can help further!

Correct? My plan is to just leave it be with small water changes, 20%+/- for now. Correct? Tank is planted and in the process of being cycled, 3 wks in.

    Absolutely right. It's happened to me many times as well - part of using them sometimes. But don't worry too much about it - it's pretty harmless, no different than using liquid fertilizers in the tank - one thing though, there is a lot of nitrogen in the api tabs, so the water changes are definitely a good idea so your nitrates don't climb. Occasionaly we do hit them and it happens, but overall, nothing to worry about. NIce job on the water changes, which is exactly what I'd do as well 👍

    Vaibhav - a good rule of thumb is to place your root tabs every 6 square inches. Of course, this depends on the type of plants you have and what nutrient requirements they need. But I would start with every 6 square inches. Also - remember to place the tabs a inch or so away from the plant 👍 Let me know if I can help further!

    Vaibhav - so your Amazon sword is a heavy root feeder, as well as the jungle val (great plants, btw 👍). Definitely want a tab close to the sword and val. Your Java Moss will feed through the water column, as well as the duckweed. Dwarf Hair and Bacopa will also need tabs. Remember, API root tabs and Flourish tabs have different nutrient content. I'll use the API tabs to give the plants a start, then switch to Flourish tabs to provide the trace elements, etc...With just gravel, you have an inert substrate, so you definitley need the tabs 👍

    You absolutely can, as long as you have the root tabs 👍 You can grow plants in gravel if you provide the nutrients. Some plants do better in those situations, but in my experience, I've grown swords and val in gravel 👍

    Tim - All I can give you here is my experience. API tabs have never had an affect on my shrimp. I keep red cherry and Amano shrimp. All good, no issues. 👍. Very well could be that someone was losing shrimp for another reason and thought it may have been the root tabs. I’ve been using the API tabs for years without any affect on any of my roommates 😀. Hope that helps!

    Same here. I’ve had good luck with the flourish tabs as well. I have a 40 breeder with 1” of blasting sand as a substrate. It’s been cycled for 6 months with a dozen goldfish. I’m planning on sprinkling some osmocote on top of the first layer then covering it with another inch of blasting sand. Dirtied tanks work, but I tend to change me aquas cape a lot. Lol

    BORG - that tank must look awesome!! Blasting sand and goldfish make an amazing contrast. Never have done it, but I love that look. The osmocote will work great too! Glad the Flourish tabs are working for ya. They do really work well to the effect that I haven't had to dose liquid ferts as much. And completely agree on the dirt - Dirt definitely works, but I've also got my hands buried in sand and substrate all the time re-scaping :) Thanks for checking out the video!

    dmichaels fish den Yes the flourish tabs work. Lots of good root growth. As long as the substrate is well cycled/ aged their will be good nutrients for the plants. Seachem liquid fertilizers(6) - 1cc each everyday into my 20 long. I try to keep my ph at 6.8

  • @analogdreamer6819

    I usually break up the API root tabs into 1/4 sized pieces and use aquascaping tweezers to quickly place them around the plant of interest (about 1" deep). Also, if you have Nerite snails, be very careful with anything that has Cu (copper) in it (ie Flourish tabs do). I managed to kill an entire tank of Nerites (twice actually) after I fertilized the water column with liquid Flourish and Flourish Trace (both of which have Cu).

  • @dmichaelsfishden

    @dmichaelsfishden

    6 жыл бұрын

    analogdreamer68 - you are absolutely right and that's what's great about API root tabs vs. Flourish tabs...the API tabs can be broken up and placed strategically 😀 But - the flourish tabs won't affect Nerite snails at all...the amount of copper is extremely small. Flourish and Flourish Trace are also harmless to Nerites. These fertilizers use 0.0001% water soluble copper vs. what you would find in copper medications (lethal to Nerties or any inverts) that use chelated copper sulfate, and - the amounts are usually 2 - 2.5%. Unless the Flourish is way overdosed, it shouldn't harm snails at all....I've been using it for years and my snail populations always thrive. I'm wondering if something else happened with the Nerites? Don't get me wrong, overdosing Flourish isn't good either, but used per the instructions, you should have been fine...I'm wondering if it was an uncycled tank? temperature of ph change? water parameters maybe? Let me know if I can help further and thanks for checking out the vid! 👍

    Abby Rhode Hi Abby - I can see how it looks that way - I should have mentioned in the video - these plants were all planted that week, so they are just newly planted small stems in the video. The growth in the small 2.6 gallon tank in this video was the result of root tabs. In later videos on my channel where I video this same tank, you’ll see how well these root tabs work. So if you are on the fence about them, don’t worry, they work exceptionally well. Sorry I didn’t make it clear that these stems were newly planted

    Kimberly - this is actually a beneficial bacterial bloom in a newly set up tank about a week old. As you probably know, beneficial bacterial blooms cause tanks to have a cloudy appearance. Enough time hadn’t even lapsed to give phosphates a chance. I had just planted it, thus the reason for the root tabs video. But I appreciate you watching the video!
