The earliest warning sign with Matos was when he decided to move in with his girlfriend’s father and let them support him like a kid, and then move around with them also. No self-respecting man would be comfortable with this arrangement, especially when he’s fathering a child with the man’s daughter. This is what kills me about the police who took her call when she let them know her husband was trying to kill her. You would think the cops would have actually tried to look for this man after attempting to kill her or tell her and the family they need to go into hiding, but obviously that was not important to the cops enough to take it seriously and a innocent family dies. Sometimes I wonder what is the purpose of cops, if it's not to protect and serve. In this case, they definitely dropped the ball on the protecting part, as many cops do

And someone as psychotic as him - he was minded for revenge anyway so even being let out just 1 day would have been enough of an opening to do what he did. But you're right, i've learnt that police are more reactionary if anything. For example, they'll never come if you say someone is planning to do something or threatening to do something. this one is horrible, but there's so many lessons that can be learned from it. The big 2 i took is that a lot of these crazy domestic situations all seem to happen when the more innocent kid of a good home chooses to date or even have a kid with a scumbag, that's what almost always leads to these outcomes, making poor choices and brining a dangerous stranger into your house. Second, I'm disappointed in the new boyfriend, he was aware of the threat and yet still couldn't stop him while armed, he was the key to the whole family's survival, if he had just won his fight, everyone else might've lived and he was the only one there who probably could've fought him 1 on 1 and won, him failing meant bad news for everyone else. This is why things like self-defense training and situational awareness are so important. People don't take their problems serious enough I find, they don't address them immediately or the cower away from them. Imagine if he just had a semi-auto rifle prepared and on his person that night and was ready for guy's arrival and had actually listened to his GF's warnings. In fact he should've taken care of this beforehand, if an ex-bf is threatening your gf, and you as a guy don't confront him immediately and take care of it, that's just a recipe for disaster brewing. Take care of problems immediately so they don't have an opportunity to blow up in your face later.

No the trick is to become more and more distant. To _secretly_ try to push them to _please_ “go enjoy themselves” _without_ you, (especially in places where you know he’ll be around a lot of women). Try your best to *shrink* your importance in his life as much as possible, without being _obvious_ about it, or causing him to rage. That way it seems like small ideas are coming from his own head. It’s a slow process, but it takes determination and a lot of patience.

I worked Child Protection for DCF and saw this all the time. The ONLY way anyone would ever get arrested for Domestic Violence is if they hung around at the scene. Otherwise the cops would take a statement and just refer charges to prosecutors. The DA would then drop the charges because the Police never even bothered to arrest or speak to the suspect. This happened in 90% of the DV cases I worked and I worked probably 200+.

Are they supposed to lock a guy up forever based on someone’s word? I’m not trying to argue or disagree with you, I agree with you, it’s fucked up. Make it make sense. OK u move your child's father in with your parents from PA to FL. You then break up and still allow him to live there. You go out partying with friends and your new bf while the child is home with his dad. You are then surprised by his anger when u come home in the late morning hours. Were they really broken up? Had he acted violent prior to that because I don't think any sane person would behave this way knowing they have a jealous and unstable partner. He threatened 2 kill her and her family thought it was a good idea 2 allow the new guy to spend the night. Like literally the guys stuff is still in the house. And why for the life of god wasn't the dads gun already loaded and ready if he thought this guy was a threat? I think this guy was hurt and unstable. He was losing everything and he was desperate. I think he wanted to be in his child's life and he reached his breaking point. I think a lot of bad decisions were made on everyone's part. The only reasonable person was the new bf mother. When the girl and her child's father broke up, they should've had eviction papers served and allowed him to completely leave the house before ever bringing another man into her life. They should have been better adults for their child. This entire situation was a shit storm of bad decisions and cost the lives of 2 many people. Just ridiculous. Yall can scream victim blaming all day but at the end of the day, her actions set this entire situation in motion. It sucks that this happened but I think even good people can do bad things when it comes to their children. He just lost his girl, his place 2 live, had no family close, no money, and to top it off if he moved back to PA he probably wouldn't see his child often. I could see this causing alot of stress to anyone. Now let's add the fact that his child's mother has her new bf sleeping in their bed just days after kicking him out... yea not very good decisions...does that justify his actions? Hell no! Idk I'm just not buying the whole jealous bf bs. This guy could clearly walk into a room and snag any woman he wanted. I think he was just a guy trying to be a dad to his son and the girl decided she didn't want him around anymore. I've been in abusive relationships before and one thing a scared woman won't do is flaunt another man in front of the man she's afraid of. That shit just makes zero sense to me.

Simple: 1) Cases of domestic disputes happens ALL THE FREAKING TIME and most of them do not result in anything NEAR what happened here. If they treat all of them like a high priority potential murder cases, the entire country would be in a permanent state of emergency. 2) They have no evidence that he attacked her, only her words. 3) Finding him is NOT easy, they don't have magic where they can just summon him by snapping their fingers. 4) The murder happened almost IMMEDIATELY after knife incident, there is no freaking way the police would be able to find him that fast, especially since they've got a bagillion other cases they have to attend to.

I will never understand how something like jealousy can motivate an individual to react so violently and viciously. Losing someone and the pain of watching them move on is understandably devastating. But it’s temporary. Even if it doesn’t seem like it will ever end, it does. There will always be someone out there to connect with and develop a relationship. Part of being an adult is learning that life can be painful at times, but nearly all pain is transient. You have to decide to let go and move forward. These scorned people that stoop to such levels of insanity bewilder me. Have some class and dignity. Fake it if you must.

I never understood that either, the moment I sense someone doesn't want me around then I leave them alone and let them take the initiative to make any further contact if they want to. Never understood why someone would want to force their presence somewhere they're not wanted, I know it hurts but if someone doesn't want you even for a really stupid and petty reason then leave them alone.

Everytime I see these stories and you get like backstory on their life, with pictures, family and friends speaking fondly of them... It makes me feel so emotional because they didn't deserve this, but this sick man killed them and he isn't being tortured right now. I hope inmates have beat him up.

@Stefania Owzarek sometimes I think that one person who says no to death must be a fanatic who is against the death penalty at all costs, because cases like these deserve the harshest of punishments and it's not just the actual leathal injection part but life in prison prisoners will live much more comfortabley in prison untill there time is up. And these monsters don't deserve any privileges at all. If guilt is 100% positive then I'd have no problems in choosing death for a crime like this!!

@Stefania Owzarek Death is a much better way out than life in prison. I'd vote to keep him alive also. Growing old in prison is truly what he deserves.

So, the father has multiple firearms in the residence but doesn’t have a single one loaded and ALL READY TO GO?!?! Knowing of the numerous death threats, numerous incidents of physical violence and all the other bullshit the ex is responsible for but to not have a gun ready to go… just in case. Is a mistake beyond all mistakes. SAD.
