Love all your stuff ! Kayak fishing is real, your doing the work, your picking the spots, your busting your ass. You against the nature, enjoying nature. You def nailed it, damn dolphins ruin the game. I have been fishing a 10 mile radius down here in Cape Coral/Pine Island where Skinner lives. Learning new stuff w every tide and every time out. That's the game. Trout are like bluegills, bla. Finding the money fish, snook and reds are the action. Fishing new water like you did today is fun, thought for SURE you were going to get sharked to death w deeper water. Got to say, those groupers hit just as hard as reds if not more. Keep them coming. I REALLY DISLIKE watching commercial TV w guides on 500k boats. Please, I can teach a monkey to fish on a charter boat.

I agree that Lanes do have softer flesh that is less desirable. However, I think that their flavor is better than some of the other snappers. If you can prepare them in a way where texture isn't an issue, they can excel.

A suggestion, You can turn the kayak by holding the rod low over the bow and using your body. The fish itself turns the vessel. This is especially good when the fish runs laterally. Not so good straight underneath the boat! Just keep that rod low and pointing straight ahead. If the fish goes left, boat goes left. Fish goes right, boat goes right. It takes a little skill but you'll get it quick. I never miss your vids. You have a good presentation

Ya know , I think this speaks volumes about fish and what determines how they feed. So I'll give my experiences , when there is like no wind and very slow current or none at all. It seems the only fish that are really active are the fish that either DO NOT LIKE CURRENT because they are a targeted species IN CURRENT , or fish that do not really care about current as much as they care about being hidden to ambush. So in NC , No current or wind , in open water , you are catching pinfish , porgies , or flounder , reds and specks just seem very scattered and not active. If you catch a red or a speck , its likely to be a solitary decent sized fish. Not really schooling. Now , when Current is decent and winds are decent like say 2 to 3 knots current , and 10 mph winds. Then reds and specks are more plentiful in open water and stacked. Fish like Pin Fish and Porgies are less numerous. Likely hiding down in the grass. So if your fishing off the bottom a foot or two in say 4 foot of water depth. You are likely to only catch something you want to catch. This sort of changes when you hit structure , Not HARD structure , but soft structure like the edge of mangroves etc. , or a seawall edge. Where in calm waters , big fish like to hide in or against the structure to blend in and ambush prey along its edge. I think in your situation today , your best bet would have been probably to stay about 100 feet from the mangroves and do some shallow runners , or stick baits on top , or get some greenies and a 3/0 hook and drift a greenie along the slow current for some nice snook or jacks and probably more mangrove snappers off jigs. I think the bridge area you were fishing , that bridge draws a abundance of fish to eat the mussels etc. and you get some variance from right on the bridge pylons to half a mile away from it. At any rate , fun times man , glad you are having a blast.
