Florida Canal Multispecies Fishing in Everglades

Спорт

Stopped at a couple different bridges and fished off of them to catch several different species including peacock bass, bowfin, oscar, bluegill, spotted sunfish. this was from about 1 hour of fishing, the end is underwater video where i came back the next day and it was crazy how much fish there is in these places.

When I was fifteen years old I took a job at a tropical fresh water fish farm east of Deerfield Beach FL at 1.25$ per hour. It was called Panagra fish farm and the farmer was a kind man called Rudy. He had hundreds of pools with different types of exotics from south America and Africa and the pool that impressed me most was the breeder pool for the red Oscar. He told me how much he had invested to buy and import ten of them and I still have trouble believing it. He also brought in the first batch of the Florida walking cat fish that at first were all albino and excaped like the Oscars did eventually. Good memories!

I love Oscar fish, I think they will turn to their true colors when they are taken care of in an aquarium. They grow as big as their environment will let them. I had one that grew to the size of the palm of a mans hand. He was blue/purple/black coloration and got so big we fed him shrimp and grubs. He lived for 6 years up until the “ick” got him. He was to big to flush so we gave him a proper burial.

I only went fishing for Peacocks once and I didn't catch any but I saw one and I count that as a victory lol! I did catch a couple of weird catfish though... I think I wandered into the salt because they were kinda strange. Sadly, when my parents lived in Florida, I never knew this existed. Now instead of yearly visits to see my parents, I get occasional(few and far between) trips to see other relatives with little time for fishing.

Have you forsaken the fly rod? I can't think of a more fun way to catch pan fish. Here's an idea for you. Using floating fly line, tie a popper at the end of the leader. To the bend in the popper hook, attach an 18-24" monofilament line and tie a small sinking nymph fly to the end of it. You''ll be covering both top water and subsurface with the same cast. Frequently, you'll catch two pan fish simultaneously. After watching you catch fish on the hellgrammite, I'm thinking of trying the hellgrammite with a fly rod using sinking fly line. I'll probably rely on the weight of the hook alone. Even small bass will present one heck of a fight on a fly rod.

I hit the keys and surrounding areas a few times a year and I've found the best way to make the trip is to drive to cocoa Beach/Sébastien inlet area(8hrs from my house), stay there at that beautiful campground on the water and fish a day or two as u won't regret it. Then make the remaining drive. On the way back hit one of the beautiful Springs like Juniper, Blue Hole etc and camp over night. The springs are 72 degrees year round.
