Thanks! Yes these are the basics. I have a lot more Prog records, but these are the first ones I got new copies of when I could afford it. I was a Deep Purple fan for Book of Talesien, and the Concerto which included classical musicians. I found this kind of music interesting, we did not use “Prog” at that time. Now it is referred to as psych / Prog by others but I still frame this music together as just the type of music I was interested in. That’s it, I just liked it.

Deep purple started off as a prog rock band ( first 3 albums ) but ritchie blackmore wanted to go in a heavier direction after hearing led zeppelin so brought in screaming vocalist Ian Gillian and bass player roger Glover and the famous mark 2 line up was born. Along with zeppelin and sabbath famously pioneerd hard rock / metal.
@ProgRockKeys
3 жыл бұрын
Well, the first thing Mark II did was the ground breaking concerto. And they remained Prog all the way through, including the latest release, not just because of the prominent full time keyboards missing in the dryer / duller Sabbath and more blues oriented Zeppelin, but also because of the more musical Blackmore and now Morse lead guitar melodies, and more colorful scales. My opinion, of course, based on real time experience and observation at the time. Even the popular Highway Star includes solo sections crafted in much greater musical detail and complexity than anything from those other two bands. Deep Purple was Heavy Prog, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. :)

Thanks for that comment! That's actually me playing the piano, the singer is one Joe Murphy from Australia. Joe wrote the vocal to accompany my original instrumental piano piece. Instrumental music is from "Harmless Melodies for Piano, Vol II" by Clancy. Maybe about 20 seconds of the piano music was actually written by my best friend in High School, Philo Cramer, who would go on to play lead guitar for the LA punk band Fear. I think he did it as an exercise in our High School music theory class. :)

Concur, don't think of Deep Purple as prog, and like wise the first two Tull albums, but their later work makes the inclusion okay. There a lot of bands that people argue about whether to include in prog such as The Moody Blues and Procol Harum. If you're a fan of those bands then you think they're prog. I find it odd that he has Breakfast in America but not Crime of the Century. Now that is a crime! He includes Black Sabbath, but they defined another genre: Heavy Metal.

Pero que envidia, la verdad yo también quiero tener tantos discos, los más que pueda, pero si he descargado barios, es que en el rock progresivo hay tanto que explorar.
The best
Wooow!
Not ONE RUSH album !!! How dare you !

Kick ass!
It is 95 % of my prog record collection, amazing. All that is missing is some Van Der Graaf generator, Steve Hillage, tangerine Dream , Soace Shanty and maybe Hatfield and the North. Great taste... ;-)
Quite surprised there were no Hawkwind in there, but got all the floyd, elp, wakeman, purple and a few others
Good to see the Bruford albums - no Brand X ?

Marvellous spread of music, rather a few more Purple and Crimson than my collection but surprised no VDGG, Camel, Brand X or Banco.
I have those PFM albums also! They are great. Unfortunately I don’t seem to enjoy anything else they released. Such a shame
Ah...A great stroll down memory lane. Some timeless gems here! But sadly very small spectrum of bands represented, More of a small collection of discographies of a few chosen bands.

That’s a fair and accurate assessment, pretty much sums up my history as a music fan. I would always tell people, I only like about 9 or 10 bands, but I like them a lot. I think it’s another autism spectrum thing.
I’d love to own ‘Octopus ‘ but can’t find it anywhere!
That was cool. I have 31 albums.
I thought I had the only McDonald and Giles album in existence.
Where's Rush stuff?
Crikey, thought I was going through my own LP collection for a moment. Great choices, Mr. Clancy but, where was Minstrel in the Gallery? :) Cheers. PS: Very nice original compositions.
No Crime of the century??? Buy it!
Great collection. I have most of them, but not the Gentle Giant, liked 'em but didn't buy the albums back in the day. And my interest in Deep Purple was only in their early work, they went metal. Have you listened to the eponymous album Touch? A U. S. band that put out one album in early 1969, side two of the album is genius, side one is just listenable ;)

Harold Baize yes, have the reissue on vinyl. Need to redo this someday, collection has probably doubled. Everything in covers now, does not photograph as well.
I have Essential Classic Rock Collection and many more videos great album Jethro Tull, Deep Purple , Uriah Heep all the music I listen too
Deep purple started off as a prog rock band ( first 3 albums ) but ritchie blackmore wanted to go in a heavier direction after hearing led zeppelin so brought in screaming vocalist Ian Gillian and bass player roger Glover and the famous mark 2 line up was born. Along with zeppelin and sabbath famously pioneerd hard rock / metal.

Judging by your album flip through, you certainly know the genre of your music quite well. Best collection.

Hi. Great collection of prog. I had about 70% of what you've got there, but it's all gone now. What about this little lot: 'Moving Waves', 'In The Land of Grey And Pink', 'Moon Madness', 'Crime of the Century', '12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus', 'Pawn Hearts', 'A Salty Dog' , 'Ommadawn'?
Hi, John, I appreciate your video. Would you please tell me which is the album immediately before "Emerson, Lake & Powell"? Thank you! Regards from Buenos Aires!

@@ProgRockKeys thanks for your reply. Jon Lord returned one last time to record the piece just before is death. I prefer the original version with all the wrong notes and orchestration just because it’s the naïve Jon Lord and a terrific Conductor trying to cope with his own culture.
Is that Ritual playing in the background? Great Swedish band!!! I know it’s Patrick Lundström singing…

@@silvertube52 id call the moody blues prog. procol is a tough call. i have their first 2 albums in my psych section but its really close. yea sabbath is heavy metal. crime of the century is awesome but lets not make fun a breakfast which is kind of like pop prog? if thats a thing. some days id rather put on breakfast instead of crime.

Nice copy of Trespass. Music is like Vander Graf Generator.
First Yes album good one. Im boring and like the US cousins stuff Moby Grape, Kaleidoscope, Jefferson Airplane Grateful Dead and the Mothers
no Rush?
In order of release

Sorry it took 3 years ,lol....But I would of started with Procol harum.....I went to a concert in NYC ...Yes,opened up for King Crimson the head liner was Procol Harum....just saying.
Not much into prog, per se, at all. But, surprised myself upon listening to the self-titled (debut?) album by Camel for the first time, recently. Before that, nothing by them had appealed to me. I'm assuming that Greenslade doesn't appeal to you? I like their first two albums plus his first solo, Cactus Choir.
Piano music was good. I have around half of these in the video. Never liked King Crimson. I'm 68, so I tend to listen more to non-rock in recent years.
