I love this! I think it's so important for people to see not just the successes but also the failures. Failing is a huge part of the scientific process, and for every success, there are at least a few, of not thousands of attempts that didn't make the mark. Thanks for making this video :)

I dont have the expertise to add anything but i LOVE this kind of puzzle. Good luck!
Seems like a ground loop problem in the laptop usb picking up some emi. I had an old shuttle minipc system prior that would cause the system not to boot when I had usb drives connected, either a ground loop in the mobo/psu, or back from the usb drive. Eventually replaced the system and haven't run into it again since.
Love your content
How do you install the magspoof app for flipper can you do tutorial?
You didn't buy a whole 'card reader' at 7:00, you brought a payment terminal...
Been trying to get the app to work on my flipper for a min I'm running Xtreme do I need to make a apps data folder for all the saved test cards my app does not have access to any of the assets when I open my saved it shows as empty thanks for all the info and help
Is there a power management profile placed to turn off USB ports? depending on battery level or power source, or is there a fluctuation on the power cable?, also maybe using a diff USB cable that you're using to plug in the reader. I can only imagine that it's a physical issue or a dll issue?, does it look correctly or change at all in the device manager menu?, maybe rollback driver or update driver, , use a USB hub?,very odd but cool thing to notice, good luck.
Edit the config file for the reader in the program directory, also make sure it’s a USB 2.0 port and download the V2 driver set (not V1)

defo the reader or the interference with it not being grounded like people have said. Id say its more likely the reader as i have the exact same one and it reads my cards fine first swipe and in both directions even really fast swipes. id buy a new one and see if there is a difference. Its all based on magnetic fields etc and all cables carrying a voltage/current will have its own magnetic field so it could be interfering. mine has screw holes in the back for mounting you could try and use them for grounding just a thought
Bad ground between laptop and flipper. The charger is increasing the voltage so the gnd is "floating". Pop an extra cable between flippers gnd and lappy gnd.
Maybe has somethihg to do with a safety feature of the mag reader. When plugged to a dedicated power supply it works but it can sense the difference between a computer plug and a dedicated power supply??
Have you looked at the board in the reader? I'd be expecting bad connections.
Sounds like something weird going on with the reader and the way it is handling voltage. Touch input devices can exhibit similar issues.
A few magstripe readers are actually locked by the manufacturers and require that proprietary software. I use that same reader at work and it needs a handshake with the terminal i use and everything gets logged on both ends.

@SUPERNINTENDOHALMERZ check the spacing you might need a shim to align the tracks for full read/ write. I forgot to add that. I remember someone going interesting things with a free reader that needed a couple mm of shim and ended up being super useful. All I can remember was it was from like 10 years ago.
Ferrite Bead(s) on the reader cord. Really.
Besides what other users have already told you, i would also check on the Bios of both workstations specially on the laptop's one any feature related to extra DC power through certain USB ports, I know for sure laptops all laptops USB ports have this feature just disable it to see if there;s any difference. Also very important this used to happened to me with the arduino boards on my main linux workstation, check and toggle the usb virtualization module on both Bios its not well known but virtualising usb ports which is done when you play with VM's copntainers, etc or just for wifi shennanigans, like having Mon Mode Activated, well this feature actually tends to corrput certain data or adds exrtra none existent things to data collected, that Y aircrack's forum explicitly states that wiresles testing should neve be done on VMs. And just to cover all possibilities try with different cables and different USB ports, and always make sure that if the device has a usb version 2.0 connected to a 2.0 port do not mix 2.0 with 3.0 or 3.2, and this is for both the flipper and the other testing gear.
Also if you have any power line networking, get that shut off right away, it radiates high levels of RF noise massively. I have a Home Amateur Radio pal nearby that hates my Powerline kit with a deep abiding passion 😂😂. I’m in the UK for reference but the standards are global
where did you get the reader?
Wait a minute. You just gave me an idea. Hopefully this works. Go to power management and look for USB. See if plugged in USB is off and unplugged for USB on? Turn both to be on for USB. Maybe that will work?
It could be the frequency of the mains electricity. US uses 60hz. Other countries use 50hz. Are you using a wi fi mains extender? as this could alter the mains frequency. Not sure where you are based? Hope you find this helpful.

It could be power settings as USBs can be turned off from there.
My only thought is it's using audio somehow and the power is creating a 60hz hum that's effecting the second track?
Have you tried it on your PC with the power off?
Awesome, I just got one and been doing nothing but failing, save the LEDs
I have a theory that would necessitate the purchase an inline USB Multimeter with a built in display, because I would want to test the connection between the reader and your laptop. You just plug one of those little gizmos into the USB port on your computer, and then you just plug your USB cable and card reader into the multimeter, and then you can go about plugging and unplugging things and watching to see if the voltage or amperage levels go up and down when you’re plugged in or on battery. I’m going to bet that your cheap card reader is a very simple USB 2.0 device without any smart power delivery sensing features, which depending on the way it was implemented, might not be forward compatible with all USB versions newer than USB 2.0. What I think might be happening is that you’re using a USB 3.x port that is able to deliver more power than the old USB 2.0 standard of 5v @ 500 mA, and when you’re plugged into the wall it’s giving you a little extra juice to charge up whatever you’re plugging in. More expensive devices designed after USB 3.X was released know that they might encounter a newer port, so even if they are only able to transfer at USB 2.0 speeds, they will be built to signal back to the host to tell it that it only needs the lower 5v @ 500 mA, or they might even be able to step down the power if it’s more than what they need. Most laptops and Windows are setup to maximize your battery life with aggressive power saving modes, so when you disconnect it from the AC power, your laptop is going into that power savings mode and it only provides the bare minimum amount of power needed for USB 2.0 devices, which is 5v @ 500 mA. Hence the reason your card reader starts working, because it’s finally getting the amount of power it was expecting. I don’t actually own a USB Multimeter, but I just saw that you can actually get a really nicely featured one on Amazon from a seller called MakerHawk, the photos show a device with “Makerfile” printed on it, which could be the OEM that they’re reselling on their store, or that’s who made the DIY parts they’ve assembled into a retail product. I say that It looks like a bunch of other units that I’ve seen before, which are likely based on the same open source project that everyone is using for these things. I’m usually the sort of guy who wouldn’t mind making my own little gizmos if I can source the parts easily enough, but at $20 it’s cheap enough that I’m better off buying it than building one. Anyway, if that doesn’t provide any useful information, then you can try plugging it into a ground lifter (3-prong to 2-prong). That said, I don’t think that would cause it, as most laptop PSUs have at least one or more ferrite filters to clean up the line noise a bit, and by the time it gets to the USB port of your system, any noise from the AC is going to be non-existent because there’s the power delivery section of the motherboard that it has to pass through first, that will smooth any of that stuff out before it reaches the more sensitive components of the system. Your laptop’s BIOS might have some USB power options, and there are some fiddly setting in Windows that control USB power. I can’t think of any that would allow you to control the power delivery of your USB ports-but I just thought of another way you can test my theory for free. You can unplug your laptop and change the power plan settings for Windows so that it will go into the maximum performance mode while on battery, and if your card reader stops working the way it does when it’s connect to AC power, then that’s a pretty solid indicator I was correct. To confirm it with a second test, you can put it into the most aggressive power savings mode while it is still connected to AC power, and if your card reader works then I’m probably right. Good luck, I hope you figure out the issue!
Appears to be noise try wrapping the cable in tin foil and connect it to gnd on your laptop’s usb port

Have you tried it in a room not rammed with RF interference - all the neon/LED/printer going, mic lighting, studio lighting, monitors etc etc etc could well be corrupting the mag field and reader heads. Get as clean a magnetic environment as possible then try again.

I think he might be able to just add a clip on ferrite loop but that cable looks thin and poorly shielded.
The plug unplug problem definitely seems like a ground loop or other wiring issue. Try taking your laptop to other rooms in the house and plugging it directly into an outlet. No power strip etc. Or try it at a friend's house. If that fixes it, you've got wiring issues in your studio. Get one of those little yellow/orange outlet tester plugs and check. As for the mag reader issues, it seems to me that the way you are holding it up to the reader is putting the generated magnetic field in the wrong plane relative to the read head. Try putting the mag board next to the strip slot. IE oriented so the purple PCB is in the same orientation as if it were a card inserted in the slot of the reader, but just offset by the distance of the spacer on the narrow side of the reader.
@astro-softpaws

hello hello, i made the thing! regarding the magnetic field orientation- i've had lots of success up to an inch away from the read head from various orientations, but i have the most success with both the orientation sas uses in the video and the one you described.

Puede que tú tensión del pc funcione más alta. Y para que el electromagnetismo no dañe la tarjeta, o la tarjeta a clonar, por eso te está funcionando con tensión residual. La electrónica funciona así. Saludos

Yea that is confusing as hell. Why would less power to the system cause it to scan both tracks?....
