This space was the biggest makeover in the house and... I cannot believe how beautiful it is now! The original kitchen was small and VERY dated. The layout alone was problematic with that big island right in the middle of the room. It blocked the flow of traffic and made it almost impossible to use the sink, cook or get into the powder room at any given time. The plan was to remove the island and add a stove/ oven onto the wall against the basement stairs. By removing the tall corner cabinet, I was able to replace the counter and wrap it around onto the new wall of lower cabinets. A ventless duct above with some CUTE tiles and a set of custom open shelves in the corner finished off this minor cabinet rearrangement. The original cabinets were in great shape but had dated door/ drawer fronts so I replaced all of those with more modern shaker front cabinets doors.
The floors were the most laborious part of this room makeover and required me to remove the original sheet vinyl and underlayment. Millions of staples came up and then I patched the layer of vinyl subfloor where it had ripped or worn away. Given the age of the house, I was hesitant to remove too many layers of flooring because of likely asbestos so floating my new floor on top was the easiest solution and actually brought it back up to the same height as the floor I had removed. I replaced all the appliances, painted everything and added backsplash tile and new lights. Can you believe this is the same space? I'm so crazy about this transformation. See my blog post below for more detailed instructions and supply list!
