    Thanks...physically it's a way to keep the larynx from coming up so much which is one of the main reasons the voice breaks into falsetto. But you don't want to sing that way. The exercises will help you train the larynx to stay down at the level where it rests when you speak. Eventually you are able to sing without having to impose it down.

    Love these exercises! It's super hard for me to keep from going into falsetto. When I do the "coo" exercise (10:33), if I keep out of falsetto there's many notes where there's zero sound or there's a bit of a "gritty" sound (not in a painful way, the note just doesn't sound smooth). I'm guessing that will go away with many hours of practice.

    Thanks Jacob! Good question. You have to let chest come in my degrees and so it can help to mix on the way down. It's something you should do in exercises. In songs too if the music lends itself to do that. Either way, try not to slam into chest abruptly.

    I hope you do reply (THIS IS LONG) I am 17 years old, male. I've been singing since 5 but stop before my teens. I had very feminine voice when I was child but now my voice turned into weird somewhat gayish. I was so shocked to hear my voice last year when I recorded it. I'm actually interested in music production and wanted to use my voice to record some songs but unfortunately my voice doesn't want to cooperate even with the use of Melodyne (although I sounded better w/ reverb but still bad). So I've searched anything about singing then I learned about some flaws with my voice. I have a vocal range of F2-Eb4-F#5. I am comfortable singing F2- until all the 3rd octave notes. My problem is I'm always singing 1 octave lower than the actual song. Example: A pop song starts at C4 then E4-F#4-A4-Eb5. I'll sing it C3-E3-F#3-A3-Eb4 or sometimes I flip into falsetto at A so C3-E3-A4-Eb5. Singing it in falsetto helped me reached the actual note BUT there is a freakin' disconnect. My falsetto is very soft, weak, somewhat feminine; probably similar to Charlie Puth but 5x worse (just imagine) while my modal voice is like a teenage boy would sound like, low enough to identify I'm a boy but still have that 'highness' which identifies me that I'm not a grown man yet. My voice is incomparable to any singers that I know, very weird to be honest. I guess I would say, my voice is darker than Justin Bieber. Back to the "singing 1 octave lower" issue, I have problems doing the exercises because it starts at G3. I can't sing a G scale if my modal voice can reach Eb4 only. I can't flip into falsetto at D4 because my larynx is very high and when I'm hitting D4 in falsetto it is in neutral position. For example, I did bubble lips startin' at G3 so G3-A3-B3-C4-D4-C5/C#5/D5. That's what happening. I think at C#4 is the start where I raise my larynx. Problem number 2 is my nasality. The lower my chest voice, the nasal I get. The higher my chest voice, the more nasal I get. The lower my falsetto, the nasal I get. F2-A2 I think is where I'm nasal and very low larynx, sometimes every time I sing it's just nasal, B3-Eb4 is where I'm nasal as well, E4-F#3 is where I'm nasal in falsetto and getting airy to no voice. Problem number 3 is I have disconnect. I think the reason is that because I can't mix. I've trying to do bubble lips ascending to Eb4 in chest voice and ascending+descending in falsetto but no mix is happening. Problem number 4 is the larynx position. I tried to sing C4 in CV and compare it in C5 in falsetto up to Eb4 and Eb5; I noticed that my larynx position is almost same but kinda strains in CV but in falsetto, effortless. I'm trying to emulate the way I do C5 in hitting C4 but it seems that my mouth and tongue are stiff and have tension. My mouth opens more in C5 compared in C4 in CV. If I'm opening more I get sharp or nasal. Based from that logic, is it possible that I can reach F#4 in CV? On the other hand, I think my voice improved for like 2% since last year (lol). Last year I can't reach C#4 in chest voice, E5-F#5 in falsetto, E4-F3 low notes in falsetto. My voice usually break when flipping into falsetto but now it breaks only when my voice is hoarse. I can't sing some words in falsetto but now I can (but some words still I can't). My question is that how can I mix my voice? Should I work on raising my chest voice or lowering my falsetto. I tried both and very difficult. I strain at chest voice and at falsetto I lower my larynx and sometimes no voice coming out. And other advice?

    You aren't used to it....like going to the gym the first few weeks, or after a layoff. But it might also be because you are doing them harder or louder than needed. Don't do them quite so hard. Over a week or so of consistency you should feel less fatigue. Also...no need to go longer than 20-30 minutes. Sometimes students think if they practice 1-2 hours at a time it will speed up their progress. It's more important to do them as demonstrated than how long you do them.

    +junaidesse Thanks junaidesse. I just sent you your vocal type. (I think that was you) and it was Pulled Chest-High Larynx. Often times this is the reason why we flip into falsetto, or suddenly go very light and breathy. Do the exercises once or twice daily. But more important, be sure they are done as demonstrated. Exercises done wrong, will not help. After you are able to do them really well, take the PowerTest again and see what happens. Eventually we want to be able to do the mix exercises. But these won't help unless the others are really good.

    @@markdraconis4141 No it's not a certain note. It's the condition or coordination of the vocal cords. If the muscle in the vocal cords disengages and no longer is participating, you break into falsetto on virtually any pitch. But you do have a specific area of your voice that is head voice. For men it begins on the Ab-A4 area of your voice. Anything there and above is head voice. If you go into falsetto, you are in a false voice...not head voice. Head voice is a connected tone and the muscle of the vocal cords is engaged.

    +noran brown Hi Noran. The best explanation I can give you is to take a few minutes to watch all the videos in the Knowledge Center under the section Flip-Falsetto. After watching all the videos, download the exercises for the flip-falsetto and start doing them. This will help you more than anything right now. Flip-Falsetto means your vocal cords are separating or breaking apart which causes a break or interruption in the tone of your voice. Or if they are not separating you might have to lighten up your sound a lot in order to go higher. Watch all the videos. They should explain a lot.

    inspir3d81 Hi. I don't have any other exercises on line at this time. There will likely be more some time in the future. Meanwhile, you will gain great benefit doing these exercises correctly. Be very diligent trying to duplicate these exercises in your voice. Especially watch all the videos about flip-falsetto. Be sure you are doing the exercises as I demonstrate them on the video in the knowledge center. I'd like to get an update after a while to see how you are doing. Please give me any questions you may have about anything.

    Hi Joseph. I'm guessing you are referring to head voice. I don't train singers to sing in falsetto, which is disconnected. Start here: www.powertosing.com/ and take the vocal test to get your vocal type. Then watch the video about your vocal type and download the exercises for your vocal type: www.powertosing.com/knowledge-center/ The exercises for your vocal type will help train you to sing in your head voice without distortion.

    The end goal is to learn to mix in exercises and songs. But it's impossible if you are straining, breaking, flipping or going breathy. The exercises for the vocal types help eliminate the bad habits and build new muscle memory so you can sing brilliantly! Hitting the top note in my chest voice is very very easy now, more so after doing the excercises before hand as well. There is simply no pull anymore and just finding it easy to maintain a top note. My Mix, if I do get it, will happen by mistake. I find if I get it, its usually if my mind is wandering whilst excercising or singing and I'm not actually thinking about what I'm doing. Hi Amiel: Yes that's the challenge right? Once you can do the exercises and get into head voice without flipping or cracking, we still have to do it in a song. It takes some time because our old habits return quickly. Try substituting the Dopy gee or bratty ney for the words of the song. In other words, don't use the regular words of the song. Use dopy gee or bratty ney or "no's" instead of the words. When they work, then try it with the words. Go back and forth until you are able to do it with the song. This is one way of transitioning to singing.

    @into.the.wood.chipper.

    6 жыл бұрын

    edong edong You have encountered diplophonia. This happens when the falsetto becomes strained from an overly high larynx. The train whistle sound is made by the false ventricular folds, which have been unintentionally trained to vibrate with the true folds. That is essentially an overcompression. Because falsetto accounts for half of mixed voice, attempting to sing in mix will sound distorted. I had the same problem, but dopey GEE and GOO has almost completely fixed it because when you lower your larynx, you also widen your pharynx, tugging the false folds away from each other. To that end, since twang is produced in the pharynx, the distortion disappears once the true folds can be stetched without pulling up the larynx beyond what is needed for a clear, strong tone.

I believe I'm doing this correctly but it feels so similar to the falsetto sensation in my throat, only more connected and resonant. • @PowerToSing

    @PowerToSing

    3 жыл бұрын

    When you sing the dumb sound, and allow it to go hooty on the higher notes, the muscle in the vocal cord is staying engaged. But because it resonates in the same place as falsetto, we get confused with that feeling and we think we disconnected into falsetto. In actuality, it is head voice. And it's very likely more powerful to your listeners than you are hearing yourself inside your head. It is head voice because the muscle is staying engaged from bottom to top and back down again.

When I have a student who is so muscled up that they can't get into head voice, I will help them break into falsetto. You may find it helpful to sing a 1-3-5-8 Octave repeat scale where you sing up the scale on a very narrow vowel like Koo and hit the Koo kind of hard it will help you break into falsetto. Maybe it would also help you recover the falsetto when it gets weaker and weaker. Perhaps it's worth a try. Good luck Moggiee1!

Generally speaking, your voice develops and improves working with the chest voice, the middle area and the head voice. The falsetto or disconnected voice won't contribute to the overall quality or health of your connected voice because the vocal cord are disconnected. It's possible that you could have damaged your vocal cords singing in the band. Have you had a doctor who specializes in vocal cords look at your vocal cords to see if they are healthy?

    Why my voice sounds almost like a fry when I'm going up? its never clear when I'm ''above the break''

  • @PowerToSing

    @PowerToSing

    It's caused by the rising larynx. Keep the larynx down and the scratch or fry goes away as does the flip or crack.

    Your video is SO great!! But I have a question. When I do this, I always start making the sounds with my chest voice. However, when I can't reach the note with my chest voice, I will make the next note with head voice and maintain the doopey sound. It's like: chest-chest-head-head-head-head-head-chest-chest Did I do it correctly or not? ps. sorry for my English.

    +Colin Bell Hi Collin: Return to the exercise that you can do without breaking into falsetto. Also you may want to check out PowerToSing.com and take the PowerTest to determine your vocal type. Then go to the knowledge Center and watch the videos about your vocal type. Download the exercises for your vocal type and work on those. They may help even more.

    +Power To Sing Thanks Maestro! Confession - i already took the test and you diagnosed Flip Falsetto.But i am only now getting round to actually doing this exercise, to my shame. Do you mean for me to just work to my current pitch limit on this one and not worry about going too high? Thanks for this.

  • @PowerToSing

    @PowerToSing

    Yes..but usually one dominates. In the case of flip falsetto, often the cause of the flip is the larynx is rising up...and chest is being pulled up and the voice flips.

    I have a huge issue after I pass F#4 with the "Gees". Scratch that, it's with every warmup. It's kinda like a voice break, but it doesn't feel like I'm flipping to falsetto. However, everything sounds like falsetto; the initial sound, the puffs of air, the extremely unstable pitch (and I'm rarely off pitch.) It even simulates a "vocal chord separation." But I compared the sound to my normal falsetto at around G4 and it seems compleltely different tone-wise. A bit darker, not as light, but still very airy. I don't know what it is... and if it is my head voice, why does it sound so bad?🤦🏿‍♂️ For perspective, I'm sixteen and I do sing with mixed voice, I don't feel any pulling or tension when I sing up to F#4.
