Flight of the Bumble-Bee for two Double Basses

Flight of the Bumble-Bee by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Arranged for two Double Basses and performed by Lev Weksler.
I approached several superb pianists about recording with me the piano part of the Flight of the Bumble-Bee. None of them agreed, perhaps because they didn't feel that a bassist is worthy of accompaniment. I was frustrated at first, but than calmed down, thinking that maybe they feared not being able to do the job in my tempo. Finally, I decided to arrange the piece for two double basses.
Big thanks to the friend of mine Denis Pekine, for filming and editing this video.

    I've watched some virtuoso performances this past couple of weeks - Debussy's 'Claire de Lune' played on the guitar, Bach's 'Toccata & Fuge in D minor' played on a bandoneon, Mozart's 'Rondo alla Turca' played on guitar - and now this! Fantastic. Thank you 🙏❤November keeps on getting better & better.

    @@ryanwilsonnn2848 His left fingers are doing glissando but his right hand is doing tremolo. So, it's hard to tell whether it's faux or not. And if you play every single distinct note without using left fingers glissando technique, it's impossible to catch that tempo. Because when you let go of the pressure on the fingerboard every time for the next note, either sounds terrible or you just have to slow down the tempo to make possible in tune or the sound to be in intonation. You will know what I mean if you play double bass as well. I believe it's the same for all other string family instruments.

    Dear Classic FM, My name is Lev Weksler, and I would like to respond to the article written about me, entitled: Professional double bassists can't work out if *that* Flight of the Bumblebee video is fake By Daniel Ross, 19th January 2016, 11:01 This is not about making excuses, or the need prove anything to anyone, but I just merely feel the need to defend myself against untrue and unjust accusations. I feel that I owe it to those people [my supporters] who listen to, and appreciate my musical performances. and to those whom I have inspired to once again, take their instrument out of the closet, and start playing once again. My musical playing style and techniques are self taught and obviously different than those who have been taught by traditional methods (not that there’s anything wrong with traditional methods), I just developed my own style through years of playing and performing the music that I love. A few years ago, I was introduced to recording on a computer, as I found out, most everyone else did as well. I then realized that I was behind the times. I quickly discovered that it was a more efficient, faster and convenient than recording onto tape. But I am not a keyboard player and do not use any Synthesizers or MIDI to create my music. I do not use auto-tune. I play everything myself, live into a microphone. Some of my songs require two Bass parts, so I record one track at a time. Yes, I do “Punch in” or re-record some parts that need to be fixed. I then shoot the video to the music that I myself have played and recorded, but I am not trying to fool anyone into thinking, that I am playing live during the video shoot. otherwise I would place headphones on my head and a microphone in front of me for more realism. I am simply accompanying myself for the purpose of the video. I am not doing a “Mimmic” act as some have suggested. I am playing together with my own musical recording…besides, If I had such great Mimmic abilities, I would join the circus instead. Sadly, one of my critics, (with the sole purpose of humiliating me) repeatidly insisted that I post a real live performance of myself. So I will grant him his wish. It is also sad to see that other fellow musicians have concentrated on the technical editing rather than the musical performance itself. I can understand how some people don’t believe that its recorded on a Double Bass because of the unconventional bass sound. Even a friend of mine, by the name of Evgeny Shatsky, who is a Double Bass player with the “Tel-Aviv Symphony Orchestra” couldn’t believe that what he heard was done on a double Bass, until he heard me play it personally. In conclusion, I would like to thank all of my supporters and youtube subscribers that follow me and continue to do so with positive encouragement. I would like to especially thank a great Double Bassist, Lauren Pierce who has open mindedly, supported. In my opinion, she is the future of the Double Bass. It would be an honor for me to share with her, some of my technical abilities that I have developed through out the years.

    +Lev Weksler Hello. My name is Kyle Skkorm, I am a professional musician who released music under the name "Skkorm". Those who doubted you obviously don't understand how musical performances are recorded, or how those performances are put to visual mediums like video. Music video's are rarely live, unless specifically.

  • @Skkorm

    @Skkorm

    dtosky TLDR: The methods used follow the actions of a musician recording an album, rather than a "youtuber" via'ing for "views". In no way was it presented as unedited audio. The audio was recorded the same way myself and others have always recorded acoustic instruments, through rerecording rough passages until they are recorded to the musician's standards. The video portion was then recorded separately, then editted and put to the song. I see your confusion though, as most videos with split screen of the same person commonly have the audio coming from the video being recorded. Now, i want to make sure something is clear here: the fact that the audio was recorded separately is proof that this was recorded as a audio track first and foremost. This was not made from a youtuber's perspective. The methods used follow the actions of a musician recording an album, rather than a "youtuber" via'ing for "views". Again, from a professional musician's perspective, this makes me identify with and respect the player for having the highest standards for the audio as the first priority. The video being recorded as a separate entity simply matches up with how (very litterally) all music videos are shot and made. I apologize for the long winded post. I felt there was a misunderstanding in this line of thought.

    +Skkorm Thank you for your accurate analysis of my video. I have nothing to add, aside from some moral concerns. Unfortunately, none of my "critics" have anything to say about the music itself: the arrangement, musical interpretation etc. They only discuss the editing of the video which makes them, not only bad musical critics, but bad video experts (because they are wrong in their conclusions). Another unfortunate thing is they don't understand is that professional musicians, have self-respect which would prevent them from faking performances. I’ve always believed it was possible to play this piece on the double bass, not knowing if anyone else had played it. I found my own way to do it. After listening to my rendition, my so called ”critics" still don't believe it is possible. i wish that people would “keep an open mind”.

    I fear the day the double bassists take over our whole world :( they are just too powerful.

    LOL 😂 I guess I'll just take it as a compliment (as I'm one of the fellow amateur double bassists, by the way, I'm not professional at all, just merely freelance accompanist)

    Sometimes you just don’t need a piano. You can do this kind of magic on your own.

    Brilliant! Wonderful. Encapsulates the busy bee perfectly. I tried to whistle along but gave my tongue a hernia!

    I don't often comment but I love Flight of the Bumble Bee and this is the first time I watched a KZread video 3x in a row! The sound of the bumble bees were so realistic that if I didn't know it was an instrument being played, I would be running for my life! Really enjoyed watching your movement too as well as the music. You are an amazing bass player. And for the first ever time in my life, I considered learning this instrument that is bigger than me!

    I thought this was impossible on the cello! (I'm a cellist) I wouldn't even think of trying it on the bass! You are an amazing musician!
