Those criticizing Flea simply don’t understand maggot brain Maggot brain is a jam/solo piece about self expression, releasing all your emotions through your instrument. That being said “That one guy at guitar center”

Thing that sucks is that there are moments where it sounds like it could be really good if he just showed a little restraint at the right times. Also I personally hate the tone he’s playing with here, I feel like that’s a huge part of it

When he started playing those triplets at 0:54, something hit me about how raw this video is on a human experience level. This is a dude who’s spent 40 years making great music and perfecting his art, he knows what great music sounds like, he knows this isn’t that and he doesn’t care. He’s at the peak of his creative potential and just shouting into the void with an instrument. It honestly makes me happy to be alive, seeing shit like that. Life as an act of defiance.

I used to Maggot Brain when I was younger and just learning to play guitar! Then as the years passed I would find myself doing it more and more often! Its a great way to release pent up tension and energy! I believe this is amazing, as an artist, nothing has to make absolute sense! We live on a World where Order and Chaos blend together in a beautiful mix!!! Thanks Flea, the energy was great!! Peace to all of you out there!!!

i’m so grateful for this comment. i firmly believe that the imperfections of this solo are wat make it so perfect and i immediately fell in love with the tone and spontaneity of the performance and his bass itself. the imperfections for me are truly wat makes something ‘perfect’. what lacks imperfections, lacks emotion (,beauty, feeling, creativity etc.) i LOVE this video

0:44 captured the red hot chili peppers signature base tone. He was allowed to go crazy and write a bassline over a bassline so of course its going to be eccentric, but i think its amazing how he layered it and when most people go ham on guitar they tend to play off time, which flea really didnt do despire the faster tempo than the backing track.

For those who don't know what is Maggot Brain: According to legend, Maggot Brain was recorded in one take when Clinton, under the influence of LSD, told guitarist Eddie Hazel to play as if he had been told his mother was dead, Clinton instructed him "to picture that day, what he would feel, how he would make sense of his life, how he would take a measure of everything that was inside him and let it out through his guitar". -wikipedia

I can tell the people in the comments here likely never heard the original Maggot Brain. The inspiration for Eddie Hazel creating the original Maggot Brain was to play the guitar like his mother had died and she had come back to life. The original Maggot Brain starts off very mellow but picks up gradually. Every time the guitar cycles back to that bend, the guitar playing becomes more and more intense. On the other hand, the bass playing in Flea’s rendition here is very intense and frantic from the beginning and stays there. There is no gradual buildup. Although the tone is still fuzzy and distorted like the original, recreating Maggot Brain just doesn’t seem to be Flea’s style and that’s fine.

  • @dlewis9760

It also a lot shorter and the point was to pimp a bass (nothing wrong with that). So, he had to get in quick and leave out the build up. It's not like he couldn't play it straight. He didn't want to play it straight. They are equating different with lack of talent. Don't like it because of the way he did it. But, don't go on that he's talentless and a has been. Sure, he's aged out. I'm older. Wait until these chumps get there.

Music learning is weird. First you gotta learn to play simple, then you gotta master every aspect of your musicianship to play hard stuff, when you got beyond that point you're playing easily again and after that you can do pretty much anything you want because everyone knows you are great and it's just your form of expression. And that last stage is what all musicians fight for their hole lifes. And that is what makes it beautiful.

Actually John visited musical college plus knows theory and thinks that it is important for him, he mentioned that in2004 q&a. Oh yeah. Before peppers he had a quite famous guitar player as a teacher. But as for Hendrix you are right.

  • @sobos1282

Warzed Arcanist music theory is very important in composing songs that are more than just basic chords. I didn’t become a proficient player for 8 years until I started to learn theory. Doesn’t mean that you HAVE to know every aspect of it or follow it to a tea, but it is necessary in coming up with really good sounding music. I am self taught just as people like Hendrix are. I can almost guarantee that people like Jimi and Flea knew/know about some sort of theory.

Okay, that might be confusing, but when I wrote that "you gotta master every aspect of your musicianship ship" I didn't necessarily mean learning music theory. Most of our favourite musicians didn't know shit back in the days. I wasn't clear about that. And I actually love simplicity in music like in Frusciante's "Before The Begging". It's just one shape, one set of notes for whole performance which is amazing musical and spiritual experience.

Music is art.. Not a math question . Your instrument is your paint brush, and people ears are the canvas.
