Flea Market, Estate Sale, Antique Mall Shopping Trifecta!

It's the battle of the antique and vintage shopping venues-Macon, Georgia edition! We're hunting early one morning to see whether the huge advertised flea market, the freeway fronting antique mall or the only good antique & vintage estate sale will produce the most fun things, with the biggest potential to please our collectors for the money!
Smiley's Flea Market is first, with acres of colorful buildings...but are they filled with our stuff, or just new stuff? We quickly learn you have to brave the blustery morn and head out back, where the outdoor tables of pickers and storage locker liquidators offer everything from costume jewelry and elegant glass to tools and cast iron. Will we score enough to want to return?
Then it's on to the estate sale, where it's already Sunday discount day. Will there be anything interesting left? The answer is yes, when we see that several of the Coca-Cola items, Irish porcelain, pink 1930s glass and other cool vintage we saw in the pictures are still there! A collection of 1980s wall masks give us a good chance to show what we look for in this fun new collecting category. The sale boss is willing to bundle, and we come out with a bag full of goods so cheap that we wonder...did our spend exceed the flea market?
Our last stop is s a roadside antique mall we've enjoyed coming to for years, Big Peach Antiques Mall in Byron. So many pretty and wonderful things, from valuable Victorian whiskey bottles and fire screens to MCM bronze statues...so why are there a bunch of new things suddenly mixed in? We talk about the issues large antique malls face keeping full of true antiques and vintage, and how the thin offerings at the flea market indicate why new stuff may be crowding out the old. Yet even as we say this, a wonderful old cabinet is wheeled past us, and we take note of a really good Pilgrim Glass paperweight worth owning!
Overall, there's a slight winner in the battle of the picking venues...but all our finds make us the winners in the end!

It is very sad to see the antique malls letting new merchandise come in especially when their signs advertise the word antique at the beginning. I live in TN and it is so hard to find good stuff to resell. The thrift shops ( there are very few) have pricing as if you are in an antique store. The Good Wills (very few) have junk and the antique shops are pricing most of there stuff full boat or more. They are also slipping in new merchandise. How sad! Enjoy your shows and glad that you talk about the items instead of just watching you shop like many of the other resellers are doing now.

Love the little turquoise glider! I like the "real thing", too. Never did understand the whole fake farmhouse craze. I grew up in and around real farmhouses where they would paint those worn items if they could afford it, instead of having worn out looking furniture.

There was an antique mall in Dallas that completely changed to new crafty inventory. I think it was a smart move because a lot of people don’t like antiques and so they were reaching a different market. They made it clear on the signage that it was no longer an antique mall. I don't mind finding people selling new old looking stuff in an antique mall, but they definitely need to say so on their signage outside so I don’t waste my time going inside for nothing and know what to expect.

16:15 Greatings from Germany. Brown ceramic from Bunzlau is actually THE original Polish pottery, dating back to medival times. For a long time, Bunzlau was German. After 1945, it became Polish and was renamed Bolesławiec. After the Germans had left, the Polish concentrated especially on the blue sponge pattern that is now common. The set you saw is a classic "Spritzdekor" (spray decor, some kind of early airbrush... sorry, I don't know the correct English term for that) that was produced from the 1920s until 1945. Feuerfest means fireproof. So it can really be used on open fire, not only in the oven.

Good evening, George. We used to have quite a collection of the masks from New Orleans, but sold them several years ago. I still like them, though. I liked the vase at the top left. I have a complete table set in the Consolidated Glass _Cosmos_ pattern...in a box. Nowhere to display it. Loved the chair the rubber faced monkey was sitting. The fireplace screen was fantastic. $1,000.00 for a piece of Pyrex...Uh-Uh. I've never understood the fascination with it anyway. I have one of the old water pumps. I could seriously use that shelf the duck decoys were on. I think I liked the estate sale best. Thanks for taking us along to all three!

I found an antique shop in Dallas that only has real antiques. It’s not too big and I can make it through there with my wheelchair. Prices are retail but since I want good stuff I’m willing to pay. Total quality. I’m 70 and enjoy every minute of shopping for unique items. I love beautiful glass. Instead of collecting the same things, I love to have just one or two of certain named glass/pottery. I have a nice variety of items that go well together. I’ll list the shop if you’re interested.

@@mkborders113 I go to City View Antique Mall at 6830 Walling Lane, Dallas TX 75231. It’s where Skillman and Abrams meet. There is some vintage there and beautiful antiques. It is family owned and operated. This is my favorite as it’s not too big but has great things. I had an employee ask if I was looking for anything specific. I told her I was looking for a tray for my coffee table. She brought me several trays as I shopped. And then she brought a tray and my friend and I both said “that’s it!” Beautiful cream colored metal tray with pink roses painted on it. There are very expensive items and also some under $10. Check it out. I’ll check out Magnolia Market soon.

The bowl only sold for 20. The time you figure in your time, gas, ebay fees and packing materials odds are you lost money on it sadly. After almost 30 years online sales being around you can tell most the good stuff is in people collections reason many now have to sell newer stuff or "junk". Online sales have also shown people even with good name like fostoria there is just lots of it out there still in most forms/styles. 30 years ago a place like that be full of old depression, pottery and elegant glass. Online sales have changed this market forever. I was looking at mccoy cookie jars tonight and the highest one only sold for like 160 online. 20 years ago online was nothing to see them going for 500. Most all people after 30 years of online sales have items now they wanted already in their collection now. This is a hard truth many resellers wont own up to. They just blame in on the economy.
