What I find most paradoxical in all is that NASA supposedly was able to make CGI at level of modern day many decades ago, and even currently making better CGI than the best professionals in their field. But same time they would be making these glaring and very obvious mistakes like the worst amateur's you could imagine. If you are pro in any field of your own, you know that's not how it works.

I obviously don't think that NASA is just doing CGI, but there are plenty of examples of people at the top of their field making glaring and damaging mistakes. Security vulnerabilities in software is one example, where extremely competent software engineering teams (complete with teams that do security audits) end up making errors that end up wreaking havoc.

@@sophiophilesecurity vulnerabilities in software is in a completely different category than vfx mistakes. Most software nowadays is too complex for even an expert to innately understand how every part works. You can’t catch all possible bad behavior by doing a code review. But a VFX artist can inspect their work frame by frame and catch all the imperfections if they’re paid enough to. Their work doesn’t have side-effects. Their only deliverable is the output, which they have complete control over.

I don't think that is the true reason why to use blue vs green screen today. Much more important deciding factor is the lighting - as Dave mentioned, a high luminosity of the fully lit green background will spill a lot of nasty green reflections on everything we want to keep in a picture, so for night scenes, we go with blue screen. We would also use the blue screen if we want to isolate any greenery (such as trees, bushes, etc), where of course a clear blue sky is amazing bluescreen for free :D. For daylight scenes, greenscreen is great, because we can then freely use a lot of blue shades on our outfits or props, and the green color spill can be successfully suppressed in post. Btw, just for you @mrsnoo86, the first reason why i wanted to reply to your post, was that I am not really sure if it wasn't exactly other way around in a past, that we woudl use bluescreens for small video camera shoots like some weather and similar lil nonsense, and use green screen when we went with film cameras for big commercials - or at least that would be my past experience. (i am 3D guy with over 30 years of experience also in VFX, currently teaching 3D animation and VFX at a high school - so i really would love to get this right for my students! rofl)

Blue screens are most often used with film cameras for which chroma keying is done in analog. For digital cameras green screen is usually preferred because digital cameras and screens typically have twice as many green pixels as either red or blue pixels, so green screening permits a higher resolution and smoother edges.

Many professional cameras have a false colour facility. Here, the luminance values are temporarily mapped to a range of different colours. This makes it very easy to determine how evenly a green or blue screen is lit as any variation in light levels across the screen shows up as changes in colour which is much easier to see than the often very subtle variations in the shade of a single colour.

Able to enjoy quality space footage, top-tier knowledge on photography and video production, easy-to-follow scientific explanation, and for the icing on the cake, able to laugh on low intellectual level of flat earthers. This is truly a gem.

There’s a problem with Flatzoid’s logic? 😮 How could that be? 😂 Lovely video as always and some of the before and after shots from real films are wonderful … and I loved the invisible weather lady 😂

Dave about the iss I have a question that your expertise in photography could help me, or anyone else who sees this comment and can help me. I’m trying to capture a transit next week during the afternoon, I don’t have a good telescope or a good camera. I have a refractor celestron and 3d printed an adapter for my ihpone12. I can’t shoot in raw, the transit is 1.27 seconds and angular size of iss 22”, which setting would be best? Slow mo 1080p 240fps, normal video 4K 60fps, normal video 1080p 60fps or burst photo? Also should I use auto fps to “reduce frame rate to optimize low light video”?

Nope, he actually does it for education, so that the non-idiots in front of the screen can have the "full picture" of what he's talking about. Otherwise simply showing that it doesn't work (as he does at some point) would be enough.

Kenny Everett used to do it where one of the dancers would unzip what she was wearing to reveal Kenny. What whe was wearing underneath was the green screen i.e. a green or blue t-shirt. It was good but sometimes you'd hope that she'd forgot to put the t-shirt on 😀 (come to think of it it was probably Cleo Rocos)

I wonder if they think the grid is part of special effects because of the holodeck background grid in Star Trek.

A grid, as any Mythbuster viewer knows. Is about measuring the speed of passing from one grid line to the next. You needed to point that out. It is also useful for measuring the relative position of an object. The ball as it is moving forward, because of the grid, is easier to gauge speed and position.
