This video from Sears PartsDirect shows how to troubleshoot a blinking lid lock light on a top-load vertical modular washer sold by Kenmore, Whirlpool or Maytag.
The lid lock light on VMW washers will flash whenever there’s a problem with the washer. Learn about a few possible issues, including the actuator motor, and see how to check the error codes on your washer to find out what the problem is.
Visit us at: www.searspartsdirect.com/diy/...
1. Run the diagnostics test
Run the diagnostics test and recall the saved error code that indicates the real cause of the problem. Here’s a video that shows how to recall those saved error codes.
www.searspartsdirect.com/diy/...
2. Replace the lid lock
If your error code says you have a bad lid lock switch, replace it. Here’s a link to a video showing you how.
www.searspartsdirect.com/diy/...
3. Replace the actuator motor
But chances are, the lid lock’s not the problem. This washer doesn’t fail that often, but when it does, it’s generally the actuator motor at the bottom of the washer. Here’s a link to show you how to replace it.

    Fantastic video. This gave me info on diagnostics mode and then one of the links gave me another site with all the error codes. I spent $200 having a tech come out but i do not think he ran the diagnostics. Had surmised it was the lid lock switch which I had him replace. Right now after a bad start, the washer seems to be working. At least now I have the knowledge to diagnose the problem.

    I wasn't strong enough to pull the washer out to unplug it so I flipped the breaker and it fixed the problem. Thinking that a power surge that went out an hour beforehand caused the blinking lid lock.

    Yes and I just inherited a Kenmore Top-Loading HE Low Water Washer Model 2130 with home purchase. The house works but the Kenmore 2130 does not. Lock light always flashing. It was purchased by previous owner in 2011. All references to troubleshoot refer to models 2012 and on (VMW). How do I troubleshoot this model? Very frustrated. Would appreciate some help please.

    Your washer model 2130 (full model number 110.2130) is almost exactly the same and uses the same troubleshooting as the Kenmore VMW washer in this video. Follow the steps shown in the video to recall the saved error codes as the first step in fixing the washer. Once you find out which error codes the washer recorded, you’ll likely be able to determine which components need repair or replacement. Post additional details (including the error codes displayed) if you need more help.

    I have this same washer and it made a grinding noise when spinning. Finally, today it made a really loud noise when it was agitating, like something got stuck and it quit and the lock lid light would flash. I can’t run a diagnostic test because the lid lock mode won’t turn off, what can I do?

  • @searspartsdirect

    @searspartsdirect

    4 жыл бұрын

    The grinding noise could have been caused by coins or debris stuck in the drain pump. If the washer can't drain the water, it will run the drain pump for 5 to 7 minutes. Unplug the washer for 1 minute and then plug it back in. If the lid lock flashes, then the control is likely trying to run the drain pump for the 5 to 7 minute interval. Wait for 7 minutes and see if the lid lock stops flashing. If it does, you can then enter the diagnostic test mode and look at error codes saved by the washer control. If the long drain time error code (F9E1) appears, then you'll likely need drain water out of the washer, unplug the washer and check the drain pump. Here's a video/guide that shows how to access (and replace) the drain pump: www.searspartsdirect.com/diy/repair-guide/how-to-replace-the-drain-pump-in-a-top-load-washer . The grinding noise could also be caused by a failed mode shifter. If the lid lock stops flashing after plugging the washer back in, then enter the diagnostic mode and check for saved error codes. If the mode shifter fault code (F7E5) appears, you'll need to unplug the washer then examine and possibly replace the mode shifter. Here's a video/guide that shows how to access the mode shifter: www.searspartsdirect.com/diy/error-codes/washer-repair/1234598/kenmore-110-model-vmw-top-load-washer/0582 . Here's a list of the error codes for the washer in case you see a different error code in diagnostics: www.searspartsdirect.com/diy/error-codes/washer-repair/1234598/kenmore-110-model-vmw-top-load-washer/0582 . We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance let us know (and include the model number of your washer so we know the exact type of VMW washer that you have).

    The flashing lid lock light indicates that the washer encountered a component problem and recorded an error code. Follow the steps in the video to recall the saved error codes from the washer’s memory. The error code will typically point you in the direction of the component failure. Here’s a link for a chart that shows the error codes for that washer: www.searspartsdirect.com/washer-repair/error-codes/kenmore-110-model-vmw-top-load-washer-error-codes.html If you need more help once you recall the error code(s) from the washer’s memory, post additional details and we’ll assist you further.

    Hi I was getting error code F7 E1 and F7 E5 which leads to the shift actuator being replaced(I think). I ended up replacing the shift actuator. Everything was going well for like a week and now those error codes are back. Is there a way to reset the codes or is my new actuator faulty?

  • @searspartsdirect

    @searspartsdirect

    8 жыл бұрын

    It’s possible but highly unlikely that the new actuator is faulty. Try calibrating the washer as shown at 2:18 in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/imlmzMmYpNDYkdI.html. If that doesn’t help, rotate the spin basket to see if it spins smoothly-those codes can appear if the spin basket isn’t spinning smoothly. If the basket doesn’t spin smoothly, unplug the washer and remove the spin basket as shown in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pYdhw8-NitLZppM.html. Check for an item stuck between the spin basket and outer tub and remove if you find one. If you don’t find anything stuck, then your washer may have a bad bearing in the bottom of the outer tub. You’ll likely have to replace the outer tub to fix that problem. If spin basket does rotate smoothly when you check it, then a wiring connection could be loose. Unplug the washer and check the wiring on the shift actuator and the electronic control board. Reconnect any loose wires. If the wires are okay, then the washer could have a defective shift actuator, a bad electronic control board or a damaged wire harness.

Press and hold the Start/Pause button for 3 seconds to turn off the Sensing light and then enter the diagnostic test mode to display the error codes. My lid lock is on...not flashing...I have the same model in this video. The washer stops on rinse/spin but has a full tank of water.How do I drain the water out and do I need to purchase a motor?! Does Sears sell this washer knowing it will fail????

  • @searspartsdirect

    @searspartsdirect

    8 жыл бұрын

    Even though the lid lock light isn’t flashing, the washer likely encountered a component failure and saved a fault code. Follow the steps in the video to recall the saved fault code. That fault code will likely point you in the direction of your failure. If you need more help after finding the fault code, post additional details including the fault code that the washer displayed. You’ll probably need to bail the water out of the washer using a container. You can also use a wet/dry shop vac to remove the water. Overall, this model of Kenmore washer is fairly dependable. That being said, appliance failures can happen at any time. Hopefully, the lid lock video will help you find the problem and fix it.

    Try unplugging the washer for 3 minutes and then plugging it back in. That may reset the electronic control board so the washer works normally. If the washer remains completely dead with the sensing light on when you plug it back in, let the washer stay on for about 7 minutes. There may be an item or debris stuck in the drain pump and the control will try to run the drain pump for 7 minutes then stop. The lid lock will likely blink after 7 minutes. You may then be able to enter the diagnostic test mode to see saved error codes. If something is stuck in the pump, you'll need to unplug the washer and clear or replace the drain pump. Here's a video that shows how to access the drain pump: www.searspartsdirect.com/diy/repair-guide/how-to-replace-the-drain-pump-in-a-top-load-washer. If you clear or replace the drain pump, the washer may work normally unless saved error codes indicate that the washer has a different failure. We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance, let us know.

    The washer likely encountered a problem draining the water, so it’s continuously running the drain pump. Try this-unplug the washer for 30 seconds and then plug it back in. You should hear the drain pump running again after restoring power. Let the drain pump run for 5 to 7 minutes until it stops. Once the drain pump stops, you should be able to enter the diagnostic test mode and see the fault code recorded. You’ll likely see the F9- E1 code indicating the control detected a long drain time. You’ll probably need to check the drain pump for a clog. Here’s a video that shows how to access and replace the drain pump: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iqKGlpSxera_XZM.html.

    I have a whirlpool washer Model # WTW4800XQ4 and the Serial # is C25023149 and the lid Lock light is flashing constantly and I've tried to get it into Diagnostics mode and it just will not work no matter what. I had it in storage for 6 to 7 months while I was moving. I moved the washer inside and plugged it in. I ran a rinse and spin cycle to just clean it out and get the smell out. It stopped for the longest time during the cycle and I tried to stop it but it wouldn't and I had to just restart it again. After all was said and done I closed the lid and went to bed that night and when I woke up the next morning the Lid Lock Light was Flashing. Any suggestions on what I should try and fix this problem?? I am on disability and really do not have much money at all needless to say. Someone Please help me !! Oh , the washer was bought new and used for a total of 8 months and then it was put into storage until I just got all moved into my new place 3 months later and brought it into the house then. Thought I was going to get to do all of my laundry but that isn't happening right now at the moment. I'e got FAITH in someone out there in the web universe who can help me get my laundry finished. The whole bottom of inside the washer is full of Laundry Soap , LOL This is my reply to SEARS PARTS DIRECT : I did exactly what you told me to and it does nothing but the LID LOCK light just keeps flashing.Anything else that I should try? I just cannot seem to get this into diagnostics mode for some reason. My washer has a piece that goes into a slot when you close the lid. This is not the 2 magnet switch.

    In your situation, the lid lock may not be engaging the lid strike consistently. Many of the Whirlpool models have a plastic bezel surrounding the hole in the top panel that the lid strike pushes through when you close the lid. If that bezel isn’t aligned properly, the lid lock may not engage the strike, causing the lid lock to flash. Check that bezel and center it over the raised mounting surface on the washer top panel. You’ll hear a click when that bezel snaps into its proper position if it wasn’t aligned correctly. If the bezel is okay, then we recommend that you enter the diagnostic test mode and recall the saved error code as shown in this video: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/how-to-display-error-codes-on-vertical-modular-washers-vmws-video.html. The saved error codes should point you in the direction of the failure so you can fix the washer.

    @@searspartsdirect So, what is the magic angle that would engage the strike? On my Bacon, pardon, Cabrio, it works on and off, sometimes works without any problems for weeks, sometimes refuses to work at all, and just as mysteriously decides to, then off again, etc. I've figured out that the strike itself is worn out (darn cheap plastikk part) and slightly bent, hence the said bezel is not the problem, but the strike itself slightly, very slightly misshapen. I just wish all the parts were made from replaceable metal and not crappy white plastikk that bends too easily. I also wish entire magical "lid lock assembly" would be engineered to last as long as the entire machine, and not just slightly longer than the warrantee period.

    Enter the diagnostic test mode and view the saved error codes as shown in this video/article: www.searspartsdirect.com/diy/article/how-to-display-error-codes-on-vertical-modular-washers-vmws-video . If you're not able to enter the diagnostic test mode, the drain pump may be running as soon as you plug the washer in due to the control detecting a water overflow condition. You won't be able to enter the diagnostic test mode if the drain pump is running in that scenario. Plug the washer in and wait 7 minutes for the drain pump to quit running then try entering the diagnostic test mode to view saved error codes. Troubleshoot and fix the conditions that caused the error codes then you should be able to use the washer again. We hope this information helps. If you need more assistance, let us know the model number of your washer and give us additional details about the problem.

    @@roxannjones1208 On vertical modular washers (VMWs), the first set of error codes start with F followed by a number (sensing enabled). The second set of error codes start with E followed by a number (no sensing). The numbers that follow will be: wash light is 8; rinse light is 4; spin light is 2; cycle complete light is 1

    Unplug the washer and remove the back console panel. Check the power cord wire connections on the electronic control board. Reconnect any loose power cord wires. If the power cord wire connections are okay, you may need to replace the electronic control board.

    Can't get any lights to light up in diagnostic mode. Occasionally can get sensing mode light to come on (not in diagnostic mode, though), but nothing happens. There is a very faint click but the lid never locks and no lights (other than sensing) come on. There is about an inch of water left in the tub, I took all of the clothes out. It looks like it did 1 round of rinsing and agitating and then it went out. Tried plugging and leaving unplugged. Tried diagnostic mode about a thousand times. If I leave it plugged in, it has a very low, quiet sound, almost like it's trying to drain. And occasionally there is a loud sound like....some kind of machine for just 1 second. Then nothing. It never comes back on. Please help.

    Unplug the washer for 2 minutes to reset the electronic control board and then plug the washer back in. Try to enter the diagnostic test mode a few more times after resetting the control board. Accessing the error codes is the best way to troubleshoot the washer. If you still can't start the diagnostic test mode, unplug the washer, remove any items from the tub (if not already removed) and use a wet/dry shop vacuum to drain any water remaining in the tub. Take off the back panel on the console ( www.searspartsdirect.com/repair-guide/washer/how-to-replace-the-electronic-control-board-on-a-top-load-washer.html ) and check all wiring connected to the electronic control board. Reconnect any loose wires. If all wires are connected to the electronic control board properly, reassemble the console and shut off the water supply faucets for the washer. Disconnect the water lines and lay down some cardboard to protect the washer cabinet from scratches then lay the washer down on its side. ( www.searspartsdirect.com/repair-guide/washer/how-to-replace-the-shifter-assembly-in-a-top-load-washer.html ) Check all wiring connections on bottom washer components (the drain pump, mode shifter and drive motor). Reconnect any loose wires. Reconnecting loose wires may fix the problem that you're having with the washer or reconnecting loose wires may enable the control to enter its diagnostic test mode to help you find the failed component that's preventing the washer from working. Set the washer upright and reassemble the washer. Restore the water supply and electrical power. Try to start a cycle. If the cycle doesn't start, try entering the diagnostic test mode. If the washer still won't start or enter the diagnostic test mode, then let us know what happens and we'll try to help you further. Include the model number of your washer with your response.

    Megan, it sounds like the red light you’re referring to is the lid lock light. You can watch this video-- www.searspartsdirect.com/article/how-to-display-error-codes-on-vertical-modular-washers-vmws-video.html-- to help you troubleshoot the problem with your washer. The washer won’t work until you fix the problem that’s causing the red light to flash.

    The only light that stays on is the sensor light and nothing happens. I can hear it clicking like it wants to do something?

  • @searspartsdirect

    @searspartsdirect

    7 жыл бұрын

    The sensing light stays on if the lid doesn’t lock. The clicking may be caused by the lid lock trying to engage the lid strike. Check the lid switch plastic bezel on the top panel that the lid strike inserts into when you close the lid. If you find that bezel loose, pull it forward slightly until it clicks. Tightening the bezel might allow the lid to lock so the cycle will start.
