I don't know about you, but the once booming small metropolis where I am had everything that NYC had but it had the smaller intimate culture you have with smaller cities? I remember older folks saying you could quit a job in the morning and have another by dinner time or even a third job? My city was a major player in steel and iron, at the same time it was a major player in furniture making also, and many, many other options for employment? It really was a gold mine for everyone, and my pops saw the writing on the wall in the late 70's and early 80's, I saw it too, and I've watched my beloved city turn into a pile of shit since then, I never gave up, but now it's time to leave, I shoulda left a long time ago. Call it whatever you want, faith, beliefs, salt, or you don't surrender easily.

@@chayastaub-krell6601 YES you're right about Pittsburgh, but I'm a little more North, just over the NY, PA boarder. We had soo much industry and ties to other major cities like Pittsburgh and Cleveland Rochester, Buffalo of course, we were all connected and it really mattered? I have a beautiful 1930s or 1940's enamel pie table is what they used to call it, but it's actually just a steel top enameled kitchen table that was built in Pennsylvania, but the legs or other parts might be made here or other parts of the northeast? And now people are waiting for ships to dock and be unloaded so they can get their China made garbage?

I remember how sick I was of hearing about Luke and Laura that year. My mother would pick my sister and I up after school and we had to rush home so they could watch General Hospital every day during the week. All they talked about on the way home was Luke and Laura this or that, driving the 11 year old me nuts. Thankfully we had a little 11 inch black and white television that I got to keep in my room and retreat there to get my fill of afternoon cartoons on days that didn't permit me to ride my bike or play touch football with my friends. I still get a nervous twitch when ever I hear General Hospital today.

In 1981, Kiss released their next album which was entitled "The Music from the Elder." But unfortunately for one thing, it didn't turn out to be successful as Kiss's previous ones, such as "Dynasty" from two years earlier. Due to financial problems, Kiss had no choice but to cancel "The Music from the Elder" concert tours (both nationally & internationally) indefinitely until a year later retitled as "The Creatures of the Night" concert tours.

Space Mountain was an awesome roller coaster at Disney World too. And I often refer to 81 as Cincinnati Bengal Year because that was the year they really established themselves as a powerhouse in our division (Steelers) at least for the 80s. And the year that they adopted their Bengal Striped uniforms which they still have today. Even as I said as a Steelers fan, I've always loved their "Halloween " colors, 🟧 and ◼ Orange & Black. Lastly Pitt was undefeated with Dan Marino until the Saturday after Thanksgiving, when Penn State crushed us 48-14 after we were up 14-0. They got 48 unanswered points but we did beat Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day 1982 so that was very cool

1981 I was 15. Freshman year in High School! Saw Beatlemania and Foreigner with Billy Squier in concert. Who could forget Fernando Valenzuela? Fernando Mania! He was great. And the Dodgers finally beat the Yankees in the World Series. Reggie played his last year in New York before going to the Angel's. Year that I visited Florida and Disney World. Boy that was fun. Also of course the baseball strike in addition to the air traffic controllers strike. If I remember, Kenneth Moffatt intervened and helped settle both. First time the Cincinnati Bengals made the Super Bowl 🏈 🥣 against Joe Montana & the 49ers. I am a Steelers fan but was torn, neither had ever won. Joe was from Ringgold which is near me but I thought the Bengals were awesome and liked Kenny Anderson who would later ironically win a ring as the Steelers QB coach with Big Ben Roethlisberger.

I turned 21 in March of 1981. And in July I got the job I had wanted since I was a kid: I became a Law Enforcement Officer. A Deputy Sheriff to be exact. When they gave me that oath of office and then issued my badge, it was the greatest feeling of accomplishment. That was the high of that year. Then just one month later in August, one of my two best friends, the man who had been best man at my wedding in 1979 and also a Deputy Sheriff there about three years before me, was killed in a motorcycle accident on the way home from work. I never got to work with him, which was another reason I had joined that particular sheriff's office. His death was not just a low point of 1981 but of my life really. I still think of him almost every single day. He left behind a young wife and a toddler daughter. She is 42 now. Dear God how time and one's life fly's by.

This is a true story. Please believe me. . I turned 12 in 1981 and I'll never forget going to see Raiders of the Lost Ark with my friends. I was excited because it had "Han Solo" in it. It was also the first time that I ever went to a roller rink. They were hugely popular back then. Now being a twelve year old my body was going through the change of puberty and I began to think about girls. Well, I'll never forget skating at the rink and all of a sudden the DJ put Waiting For A Girl Like You by Foreigner on and said this next skate will be couples only. I didn't have a girl to skate with so I just stood and watched. Well, I'm 53 now and I'm STILL WAITING to skate to that song with. pretty girl at a roller rink. The world changed in the meantime and roller rinks sadly became things of the past. You really don't see them much anywhere. Maybe someday I'll find a great girl/woman to skate to that song with at some long forgotten roller rink.
