Fixing Whirlpool Washer Agitator Dogs--The EASY Way!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Originally recorded July 27, 2012.
The "Whirlfool" that worked great for 2 months has developed a common problem with the agitator dogs.
With Matt as cameraman, I show how to fix this, step-by-step, with a few helpful tips and tricks along the way.
Good as new!
The model number of this machine is LSN7233BQ0. The part number for the replacement agitator dogs is 80040.

I know this video is pretty old, but I hope Jaykay18 sees this comment. Your video was excellent and saved my family from a very expensive repair. A repair company wanted to charge us $400 for the repair that only cost us $4 in parts from Amazon. After watching your video I was able to order the dogs from Amazon and it took my wife and I about 10 minutes to fix our washer. You are so kind for sharing your knowledge, and I greatly appreciate it. I subscribed to your channel and cannot thank you enough!

That's great to hear! Yes, I'm here. I always read and reply to comments, it keeps my viewers knowing that I appreciate them and will chat with them and answer their questions, should they have any. That's just one of things that sets my channel apart from so many others who post a video and then ignore all of the comments on them. You've made the right choice by subscribing, there's a new video every day. You'll find stories, reviews, repairs, crazy inventions i come up with, all kinds of stuff, every day something different. And I am always around in the comments. Very happy to hear this video helped you out. I'm a very interesting character but unfortunately they broke the mold after me, so you'll never find another like me. I always tell the truth about things, and always do my best, I simply would not have it any other way. The job isn't done until I'm satisfied with my own work. This was a very early video of mine, I've made several more like it since. You've made the right decision to fix your machine. And I'm surprised but at the same time not so surprised that a repairman would charge THAT kind of money. I know he's got to eat too, but we can't all have filet mignon and lobster every night! You've also learned a valuable lesson, though you may not realize it. If you have a problem with something, chances are, somebody else has had the same problem. Nice guys like me realize that and choose to share their knowledge, for free, with the rest of the world. That's why I'm here. Happy washing, and welcome aboard!

@@jaykay18 We had a quick follow up question about the repair. Now the dogs work great, but the machine seems to me making a rattling sound when in the spin cycle. Have you encountered this before, and if so do you have any suggestions. I reviewed several of your videos, but none of them covered this specific issue. It sounds like the agitator is not on tightly, but I tightened it down as far as it would go. Any advise would be greatly appreciated if you have the time. If you get a chance to read this I thank you in advance for your time. Regards, Drew

@@drewwebster711 Sometimes they do rattle. You can try this if you think it's the agitator: Just remove it. Take the bolt out, pull it off, and then set the machine to spin. See how it runs then. If no more rattle, it's just the agitator. Nothing to worry about. If the noise persists, it's something else. I'm imagine possibly the drive block. That's located under the tub nut, it goes between the wash basket and the shaft. I don't have any videos specifically pertaining to that subject. I can tell you that you need to purchase a special spanner wrench to remove the tub nut. Not very expensive, usually under 20 bucks. But again, if it's just a rattle, I really wouldn't pay too much mind to it. If it gets worse, then something to think about.
Watched many videos they all talked like they knew what they were doing but only this video addresses the problem to the point on agitator and makes it simple. Thank you.

Thank you! It's very important to be able to "walk the walk" if you "talk the talk". I also have other talents, such as walking while chewing gum! Thanks again for watching, glad this helped you out. These machines are workhorses and hopefully they will last a long, long time.
This is a GREAT video! I was all set to buy a new expensive washing machine, but your video and $1.80 later I had a perfectly good machine! It was so easy- just like your directions! (I also got to clean my grubby agitator in the sink as a bonus.) I can't thank you enough. Kind people like you are special and should be celebrated. What goes around comes around. Good health and prosperity to you.

I called the appliance repairman because of same scenario. He stated it will cost me $100.00 plus parts! The dogs are fairly inexpensive ($6.00 here). I followed you video instructions. Viola, done,! And I didn't even break a nail. THANK YOU!

Yes! Another one saved from the perils of newly made, poorly washing machines! Thanks for choosing my video over the others out there. Really great to hear it helped you out!
THANK YOU!!! Your explanation was perfect. Easy to follow directions you completed it by putting everything back together again. Most videos show you how to take something apart but don't always finish the directions. My washer was slightly different, actually easier since I didn't have to pull the agitator apart to get to the dogs. But everything is working like it should and only cost me $10 for parts and an adapter for my socket wrench plus about 20 minutes of my time. I love KZread!!!

thanks so much. My folks called me up and said their washing machine wasn't working as well as it used to. So I went over and took a look and noticed the agitator was free spinning. So I figured some sort of clutch or gears are either broken or worn off. I searched for videos on KZread, saw your video, picked up the parts and bobs your uncle. All fixed. Thanks again. 😊

See? You CAN do it! Believe in yourself, you're a lot more capable than you think. I'm really glad I was able to help you out.
Thanks, we rented a house and it had old whirlpool washer and dryer that are in good condition so I didn't want to have to buy new ones yet. I was pretty dismayed when I happened to help my wife wash some clothes and noticed that the agitator wasn't moving the clothes around and up and down. The agitator dogs are clearly made of a soft material on purpose so that they take the wear, them being the easy parts to change. A common engineering technique for mechanisms like that but something that never occurred to me until I saw your very helpful and well-made video.

Great video thank you. I couldn't figure out how to separate the top of the agitator... Stand on it. Brilliant I was able to simply flip (reverse) my agitator dogs and they are working again. For a few years I've spared the hassle of ordering replacement parts.

That's exactly why I made this video. It's a fairly common problem; these agitator dogs do wear out in time. There's probably a bunch of machines out there that have worn ones and the owners don't know. But it's a very simple process to replace them, barely requires any tools or getting your hand dirty, and restores the former glory of these machines. There are no machines like this made anymore. They're all junk now--as a service to all Whirlpool Direct Drive owners: Keep these machines as long as you can; you'll never get anything like it again. Glad I was able to be of help. This unit obviously had worn dogs, so they had to be replaced anyway. There are a number of other videos on the 'Tube that show how to replace these, but most are not as "down to earth" as a regular guy and his machine, showing start to finish, they are appliance guys that show it broken, then fixed, with a $175 blackout period in between. Hope your machine provides you many, many more years of service. I purchased 4 sets of these agitator dogs when I bought them, that way I had 2 sets for each machine.

yeah, Ive heard the same from a repair guy dogging all the new front loaders etc. says 80% of his calls are on those. After having mine opened up it looked like about everything on there was easy to get at. figured I should be able to fix it for awhile. Sorta like looking in the older ( my old '72 nova when younger) and the newer cars where you cant find anything. Granted, they can just plug em in to see whats wrong... BUT not always. My friend's new truck performed fine in the shop, but messed up on the road... I showed him by tapping on the black box while the truck was running, that he had a loose fuse that would cut his engine when hitting bumps on the road. cost $0 lol

Paul, you don't want to replace your washing machine with the junk they make today! Either way, I'm very happy this helped you out. Thanks for watching, and here's to many more years of quality service from your machine!
Thanks, your video helped immensely. I had an additional issue that did not seem to bother you at all. I had trouble getting the part that holds the dogs in the upper part of the agitator to come lose. There are two tabs that stand on the agitator that fit through teardrop shaped holes in the dog carrier. Those tabs are pressed against by tabs on the dog carrier. It took work to get the dog carrier to release from the agitator top. When putting things back together the tabs became more of a problem. The tabs wanted to lean over an go under the dog carrier. That kept the dog carrier from going down properly in the agitator top. I had to put a loops of cord around the tabs to pull the tabs toward the center as I pushed the dog carrier into place. Then I could pull the cord out.

I was having an impossible time separating the two parts. Reading through the comments one guy mentionned he used a soldering iron to melt the small factory welds that are in the transparent cap over the dogs. I have no soldering iron but had the idea to use a dremel with a conical bit to grind off the top of the 4 little welds that are inside the plastic retainer ring. Worked like a charm. It came apart with one hit with the mallet. I cleaned out 15 years of accumulated crap in there and I'm on my way to a fixed machine for 2jh of screwing around and 5$ worth of parts. Thank you @jaykay18

Thanks. I was shocked at how much shit had accumulated over 15 years. Almost good as new after a lot of soap, elbow grease and a toothbrush :D. I changed the o-ring in the plastic holder too because it's cracked. My lid switch doesn't work unless I use a pencil to force it down. I discovered that one of the 2 screws holding it in place screws directly into the switch itself and THAT has broken off. Is there any way to salvage it? Bypass it? I fear the second screw will give out and I'll be SOL.

Quite some time, as a matter of fact. Oftentimes you won't necessarily know when they wear out. I usually give the agitator a test spin in both directions before starting laundry just to make sure. They should last several years, if not longer. I do about 1 load per week in each machine, and my newer one has not needed its agitator dogs replaced in over 4 years. They are cheap, a replacement set is under $5. When I replaced them in my older unit, I ordered 4 sets, just to have.

Mouse Y Thanks Cyndi! Glad this helped you out, saves a whole bunch of trouble this way! Keep that machine of yours in good shape. They'll never make anything that good ever again.
Looks like you have your own personal laundromat down there! Hopefully you can find some late 70's early 80's belt-drive models to add to that ensemble!!!

Thank you, yes! I'd love to get a machine like that. My dad has one from the late 1970s, still works to this day!
thank you my dad was able to fix it in no time

I'm really happy to hear that! Glad I was able to help you out! And thanks for the sub! Keep that Whirlpool as long as you can; they're relatively easy to work on, but usually the guts of the machine is bulletproof enough it shouldn't need service for a long time to come. As I've said to many others, keep that machine as long as you can. They will never maker a machine (any manufacturer, any model) that will wash as well as this. You bought the best, now keep it!
Yeah I can't believe it was so easy to fix..!
thanks!
We had a hard time getting ours apart, but after much jerking and pulling to no avail, my husband got out the rubber mallet and a couple of well-placed strikes later it did come apart. Just a thought for you, PrincessAlbie!
Nice job

No problem, happy washing!
Thanks for this Jay. How important is the washer that goes around the bolt? Mine was dry rotted and when I tightened the bolt down it came apart.

Sure, no problem. I'd say the machine will likely work fine without out, but it might be a good idea to try to source a replacement soon. You may also have another item around the house made of rubber that you could drill a hole through to act as one; perhaps a large o-ring would work as well. I'm sure the actual part is just a couple dollars.
you da man, jaykay
