Fixing Up a DESTROYED Vintage Dirt Bike...Will It Run??

I end up buying an old 1987 Honda cr80 from a guy off Facebook marketplace for a decent deal. The bike needs to be gone trough completely. #Vintagegem, #Willitrun, #Dirtbike,

Hey I have a question for anyone who reads and might know what's up. I have a ktm 250exc 2 stroke. I will ride this damn bike for a day and if I turn this bike off at the end of the day it wont start anymore, we check the spark plug and no spark. There's a very small bit of what I'm guessing is oil. I've been through 3 spark plugs just wanting to ride but I know it can be a few things.. the bike runs and starts fine until the spark plug fucks up. I've adjusted the carb screw to what the manual says and went from 40-1 to 50-1 because that's what all my buddies use. Hasn't solved anything. I think I'm going to buy a carb kit but I don't know if the jets come with the kit. I'm thinking it could be the jets but someone's telling me it can be the struts or the reeds. What do you guys think? I'm going to take this dang thing apart next week but just getting opinions.

  • @johntunstall9698

It should idle with the idle screw. The only reason for the cable adjustment is to take the play out of the cable. It’s dangerous to use the cable adjuster for idle speed. When you turn the bars it can make the engine rev. I’m pretty sure you have a leaky head gasket that is putting coolant into the cylinder. If your pump seal is bad you’ll most likely have oil in your radiator. I love the old cr’s. It just needs some tlc to bring it back. I’ll admit that some of the things you do drives me nuts but hey, we all had to learn this stuff at some point lol.

  • @mikelwmc

There's an idle adjustment screw on that carb opposite side of the air screw. Do not adjust the idle using the throttle cable. There should be free play in the throttle.

If your bike is burning the coolant oil mixture and making the smoke like you said, then your crank seals are bad. There is no connection between the gearcase and the cylinder, so the only way it could burn transmission oil or coolant is through the crank seals

Conner Jones Its unbelivable how long this Guy has worked on bikes, and still doesnt have a clue how an engine works. And it could of course leak through the head gasket Also. But it might aswell have been some condensation in the pipe. And the engine having a bit of Milky oil could Also be from sitting. This Guy is the definition of clueless

A resto to make it look as close to the way it came from Honda would be so cool ! I remember seeing these bikes in the showroom as a kid (yes I'm old). On the frame and swingarm try some aircraft stripper and polish/reclear the swingarm. The frame originally should have been red with a blue seat. I loved these little bikes I'm so excited to see it be saved ! Great find Joe !

Love your videos, reminds me of my childhood. Only thing you really shouldn’t adjust idle at the throttle. The adjuster at the throttle is the cable adjustment, you need 1/4” free play to stop throttle surges while riding. When you adjust from the throttle you are taking all that free play away. If you can’t get it to idle with the idle screw there is a problem somewhere, usually just a carb issue. Besides that keep up the good videos, keep learning and keep the passion alive👍👍

Some of those Hondas have the idle adjust tied into the choke knob. Try twisting the choke knob in or out as needed. You do not want to adjust the idle by tightening the cable. Something else is wrong if that is how you are adjusting the idle. That little hose is just for carb venting, it allows the float bowl area to be at normal atmosphere pressure, not pressurized or vacuum. Should not affect idle at all without that hose.

Without the air filter it would be normal to get a lean idle, but you get the opposite, mid throttel and idle are way to rich. You might need a leaner idle jet or maybe you just made the hole larger while clining it. You might want to replace both crank seal, water pump seals, reads and head gasket After that you should be ok

Leak test! Mix 32:1 minimum plug chop to confirm. Look these things up if you're unfamiliar. Step up your game bro it'll bring you major credibility and provide us more content. I like and understand why and what you do and I give you credit so the advice I give is to only make you better.

Front suspension prolly has little to no milkshake in it. Change the fork oil, if the seals aren’t leaking, should be fine.
