Fixing two common modular tile problems.

Thank you very much to my new editor, Liamrups, for saving me a lot of time and energy!
So, Square dungeon walls get boring. And take longer to make than we'd like. Let's fix that.

PAINTING STONE RECIPE: V4.0 - darker stone as temple blocks 2.0 Black and mod podge basecoat - always. It darkens the tone of the remaining paints. 3:1 neutral grey:tan, airbrushed on in 2 solid coats, or brushed on (minimal thinning, but not totally thick), applied thinly to avoid clumping paint, in 1 coat. OR Pro acryl Warm grey basecoat, thinned 2:1 paint to thinner and airbrushed on. This is MUCH faster, and not as expensive as you might think as you waste less paint/use less layers paint about 1/2 the bricks in either 2:2:1 tan, neutral grey and white, or 1:3:3 tan:neutral grey:white Make sure this layer is strong, not translucent by too much water thinning, but also NOT pure thick. Thick leads to awful texture for drybrushing. Drybrush with 1:3:3 tan, neutral grey, white Drybrush white - make this reasonably strong or it'll fade with the wash, but try to avoid 'whitewashing' the whole thing! Build it up carefully. Black-brown wash Matt varnish (I use vallejo, through an airbrush, but water based cans will do) dust with dirt grout mix, wipe most off, spray with scenic sealant, wipe off with paper towel (see city tiles or the updated temple blocks bonus video, I do less dirt in dungeon floors than city streets, and even less in walls. Walls I actually do slightly more on the exterior wall than interior, but that's me obsessing…) DIRT GROUT MIX RECIPE: Full guide is shown in the basing minis video :) Brown and black unsanded tile grout Dirt cooked in the oven and filtered through a sieve. You want to grind this dirt up with some kind of improv mortar and pestle into smaller grains - it doesn’t need to be dust like the grout but should be otherwise pretty small. I strain it through a sieve to get rid of anything too big. The ratio you want here is going to depend on the colour of your local grout I just mixed in a bit of black at a time until the colour darkened down to match the original dirt. I ended up with about a 4:2:1 ratio of dirt:brown grout:black grout I now add 1/2 a ratio (shot glass) of natural earth yellow pigment to make the reddish tint go away, without turning it grey by adding more black grout or grout mix. I added this to 12 dirt, 8 brown, 4 black grout. So its more like adding 1/8 of a glass to the minimum ratio shown above (4:2:1 then 1/8th of pigment) WASH RECIPE: Only make as much as you need, the mixture will settle overnight. A good shake will fix it, but probably not when it gets thicker… Full bottle (200ml), 30 drops black, 10 drops brown. 60/40 water-matt medium. Then add a few drops of flow improver per bottle. For 100ml mixes (half a bottle) just halve the ink SCENIC SEALANT RECIPE: This stuff is really easy to mix, I use the following formula: 1 part mod podge 4 or more parts water - you can make this as thick or thin as you like, and just use more layers to make it harder. A drop of dish soap (fairy liquid type stuff) or flow improver - this helps it…well…flow :) The more mod podge, the darker and more 'wet' the dirt will look when dry. But you can use multiple thinner layers and build up strength that way too. MAGNET SAFETY: Don’t use around small children or animals, if ingested these can be dangerous. Never let very strong magnets slam together, especially thin ones. They can and will smash under a lot of force, and then become very sharp, highly magnetic shrapnel. Not good. Easy to avoid though, just take care. NICKLE STRIPS/STEEL CAN TIPS AND SAFETY: Nickel and Tin is safe enough to use if you're reasonably careful, I used to cut most of mine from tin can lids with scissors, though now I use nice smooth nickel strips. Made sure you're wearing thick gloves when cutting and handling, I use some woodworking gloves. If you want to make doubly sure the metal isn't sharp, use a metal nail file along the edges to round it off.

My dad has recently gotten into model railway stuff (after years of giving me crap for playing warhammer and D&D :P ) so I showed him your previous video for a bit of inspiration on what he can do with the new hot wire cutter he just bought. He's already started texturing the viaduct we built using a pen to carve the bricks into a piece of balsa wood. What I'm trying to say is: Thanks for your videos, they're really great and it's giving me something I can work on with my dad.

But I've watched every single video of yours because your particular brand of meticulous, genius inventions of miniature craft are so satisfying and perfect. So Gandalf decides to show up after all this time. ;) Hey did you hear Professor Dungeon Master was saying when they met with the guys at WOTC they were talking about your channel? Apparently some of the designers watch your channel.

this was my problem as a 3d modeler but with the you typically need a pillar to not show seams

So what material should we use to print the jigs that won't melt against the hotwire? I have a SLA and PLA available to me

Resin ideally though I believe some filament works, I can't say for sure as I don't have one myself :)

As a general rule, when looking at the exterior of an exterior wall, north up/right, south down/left :)

Could you create some STLs for floor tiles? Same style as your wall STL stamps.

I follow your method but it seems the end result is just fine only the walls and columns tend to stick to each other after sealing and making gaps in my builds... any tips are welcome thanks

Matt varnish sealing is essential to reduce this, the dirt effect I show on tiles like the city tiles using grout reduce/removes this pretty much entirely :) I do the dirt much less intensely on the walls than floors too

Do you typically pre-build your structures, or are you able to assemble them as you run the game?

  • @RPArchiveOfficial

Depends on the scale, big stuff I'll pre build just in case but hide under a cloth or something Smaller scale I lay out as needed

I know I'm a little late to comment but I scaled the dungeon tiles to 9 cm by 9 cm and was wondering if it would still be possible to scale up the rest of your other builds.

  • @RPArchiveOfficial

Theoretically yes, but Stls (jigs, accessories) are designed for the size I show so rescaling would be needed, and accessories in particular may nit work if rescaled because the weight/magnets are designed for the scale I show :) But other than that should be fine
