    This gives me an idea. I play OSR and light is an important factor there. Having an in game "torch" item the players place where their torch bearer is while having the roomer slightly darker might make this fun. Can "physically" see where the torch light runs out. Maybe, will have to play around with it.

    Another brilliant video! Love that DM-controlled spot-light! For on-table lighting I use Wyloch's inspired LED standing torches - snip up those flickering LED tealight candles leaving just the encased battery, led & switch - stick a bit (2-3cm) of a black straw over the led pushing light upward - glue the plastic "wick" to the top - cover the whole thing with hot glue (except bottom) leaving a rocky texture - paint black - drybrush grey. Unobtrusive all-occasion lighting! I might have to get a smaller speaker like you've got for monster sounds & I'll have to check out Dscryb!

    Thanks very much! I'll have to check out that wyloch video. I'm not much for soldering, so I love simple LED's like that. Yeah those speakers were a steal from Kmart for $5. It doesn't even have to be great quality because it won't be booming.

    These are awesome! So, one thing I'm going to try after this is to use the LED strips that line my living room and switch colors when needed, like flooding the room with red when a surprise encounter occurs or raising/dimming the lights for day/night, caves, etc. I'll check out Tabletop Audio also and figure out how to create a sound board. Thanks!!!!

    Your setups are always fantastic! In my games I use a ton of 3D-printed terrain and minis, as well as ambient sound and music. The problem is with lighting, though. All the effects you use work fantastically in a dimly-lit room, but are almost impossible to achieve in a well-lit environment. On the other hand, while dim light is great for atmospheric effects, it is horrible for reading character sheets, spell cards and the like. So I ended up with a trade-off, using normal white lighting right above my gaming table, and colored lights on the right and left, which I can control with my phone. It's not that atmospheric, and it's not very focused, because I'm using normal LED WiFi lightbulbs, but it gives some backwash of color to highlight the situation my players are walking into. Furthermore, I can play with the color temperature and brightness of my main white light, making it warmer (inside a tavern, around a fireplace) or colder (on a windswept glacier), brighter (midday in the desert) or dimmer (in the sewers on the city). It's not perfect, it's not as mind-blowing as your rig, but I think it's functional, pretty cool and a good trade-off between wow factor and small-print readability :)

  • @Atmoseeker

    @Atmoseeker

    D&D for me has always been played in dim light, even if it's just drawing the curtains and having some candles. Totally understand that's not for most folks, and happy to hear you have some ideas that work for your setup. I usually have some player lighting for reading (small spotlights)

    great video as allways! i wouldnt mind more videos like this but on different settings, like wilderness, towns, and scifi stuff. also, those small purple and blue ambient lights seem like a great entrypoint into cool atmospheric lighting, do you have any reccomendations for online stores where they (or similar lights) are sold?

  • @Atmoseeker

    @Atmoseeker

    Жыл бұрын

    It might not come across in the footage, but I actually had a big softbox (big light diffuser) set to about 50 percent for a lot of these shots creating some extra light, so the rgb light still plays nicely. It's not a daylight lit space, but some extra light won't totally kill the effect. In more darker room setups, I've also had little pinspots aimed at each players spot so they have a light for their notes and stuff.

    Hey! Yeah I use an Elgato Streamdeck for all my sound and lighting control. Basically, you can have each button chain together simple commands like "change the lighting color to this", and "play this sound effect", etc. Makes it easier when running a d&d game and with one button press it can make a whole bunch of stuff happen automatically.

    This is just stupid insane for a home campaign. I love making terrain and stuff for the campaigns we run but this is just taking it way too far and actually pushing people out of the game as they think this is needed for a good campaign. Hell critical role and some of the professionally done games do not do this.
