    Thanks to everyone's input, I discovered DROPPING THE STEERING COLUMN IS NOT NEEDED on the 1998 and newer RAV4. If you have a 1996 or 1997, you still have to do it. Toyota changed the instrument cluster trim for the later models.

    In my 1998 Toyota RAV4 (with a broken clock) I was able to finagle the instrument cluster trim from behind the steering wheel, and while I wasn't able to completely remove the dashboard panel with the wheel in the way, I was able to loosen it enough to reveal the screws holding the clock in the panel... Removing those screws (specifically the bottom screw) was another story... And so the steering column had to be dropped. "This is the way." I don't consider myself a "mechanically inclined" or "handy" person, but with the help of your tutorial, I was able to fix the broken clock in my RAV4! & I replaced the burnt-out climate control light while I was at it👍. Even more remarkably, I was able to put everything back together once the clock was soldered and working. THANK YOU for these videos; They're so enjoyable to watch and obviously they are a tremendous help.

    First off, great video. I have a 2000 Rav4, and the clock light just started dimming the other day when I turned the headlights on. First thing I thought of was a bad battery or alternator going bad, but I tested the voltage while the car was off and while running, and the volts were 12.8 and 14.3, so I think I'm fine there. Today, the clock was dim even before turning on the headlights. Could there be another reason other than bad solder, like a fuse going bad or something? I'm just happy the alternator seems fine, I just replaced that a year ago. Thanks.

  • @LabCoatPaul

    @LabCoatPaul

    2 жыл бұрын

    The clock is supposed to dim with park lights or headlights on. This is normal. It's so the clock isn't glaring in your eyes while you're driving at night. The only time the clock is full brightness is key on, headlights all the way off.

    @@LabCoatPaul - Thanks for the reply. I've had my car since 2000. This is different, you can barely see the numbers. And like I said above, today it was very dim before putting the headlights on. Any reasons other than bad solder? Anything else I need to check?

  • @LabCoatPaul

    @LabCoatPaul

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Nick23at63 I haven't had that problem, so I don't know. Try re-soldering the clock like in my video. If that doesn't work, get another clock from the junkyard. If messing around with the clock doesn't do anything, you might have some wiring problems. Check the fuse that goes to the clock first.

  • @Nick23at63

    @@LabCoatPaul - Thanks, Paul, for your replies. Just giving you an update: my clock seems to be working at the moment like it had been for years, and my solution was - to bang on the dashboard right above it. I honestly did not expect that to do anything helpful, but surprisingly, it did. Yes, this won't last, but at least I know the clock still works and it is not a fuse problem. Some sort of loose wire or the solder going bad, will eventually have to do as you did in the video probably. Any other thoughts about this? Oh, and since my car is a 2000 Rav4, does that mean I most likely won't have to drop the steering column? Thanks again.
