Saw this video as my rear PTO would not stay engaged. When the tiller hit dirt the PTO would just stop. So based on this video I looked at the release valves which are pressed down by a plate with the knob so one can move the tractor without power. The plate on mine was permanently bent and was partially engaging the release valves. So took it off, cleaned it up, bent it back a bit in the vice and now the tiller chews through anything. Thanks for putting information out there on an old but super useful product!

Have a 317 that I bought from original owner. It was repowered with an Onan p218g engine. Have used it for several years now with no issues. Would be nice to have power steering.

I don"t want to say much about the 317. However the 317 was the reason Deere came out with the 318. The Series 1 engine had a lot to do with that. There are 317's out there with Onans in them as there was problems getting the series 1 problem fixed in a timely manner. This may have been a Kohler problem. There was an aftermarket power steering unit available for them. The series one problem may be fixable or may have been repaired in your unit. You may be able to find out by checking with Deere or Kohler. When your in there doin the rings make sure you fix the series 1 problem.

Very Nice Tractor, Mike. Was the engine the original KT17 Kohler? I think that tractor was probably owned by the railroad at one point judging by the stenciled numbers that were painted on. More than likely, The PTO sustained a very bad shock like hitting a very solid object while the PTO was fully engaged. The PTO shaft splines and the fan blades pretty much tell the story - With that kind of shock, Something had to give. I am really looking forward to seeing your upcoming video showing the tiller in action. Does your 317 steer as sharply as like the 110 John Deere tractors did? The 682 Cub Cadets were pretty similar to the 317 John Deere tractors but I never did like the steering action compared to the John Deere tractors.
