Saw “ @user” comment below who cleaned the thermocouple sensor with sandpaper! My thermocouple on same Smeg cooker and burner was discoloured with a film of blackened carbon deposit so I sprayed some “car engine carb cleaner” onto a small piece of green woven kitchen scourer (wearing nutrile gloves) and cleaned the thermocouple and tip until clean. It now works fine and lights immediately! Not sure how long this will last until I have to order the part and get it fitted as shown in the video.

Same Smeg model and same issue, will try cleaning thermocouple first and then order the part and follow your excellent video.

had the same problem, fixed it by cleaning the tip of the thermocouple with some fine sand paper until it was shining like new and just worked perfectly. there isn't much "stuff" to break in a thermocouple, so most of the cases this issue happens is just because of carbon build-up on that tip. for anyone else with the same issue, just try sanding it down first until bright and shiny :)

@@techmansa Short story no. See synopsis (1) and next steps (2): 1) I had to change a few things, one of which was the selector switch which had blown and the other was thermal coupler. In the process I also replaced the ignition element, after which still no success. 2) After careful inspection I believe the thermal coupler sat slightly lower then the others on the hob. In short even though this was OEM I suspect they changed the part during at somepoint. I'm going to order a generic replacement and see if that makes any difference. I have a 100cm dual fuel oven so the effort is a lot but will post some footage of the process if you're interested. If you follow on techworkshop1 on KZread and Instagram I'll get it up in the next few weeks.

Every time I go to the dump, there are piles of probably perfectly and easily repairable domestic appliances. But since (a) repairing is often more expensive than buying new and (b) people are so fearful of attempting repairs themselves nowadays, this madness continues. It's such madness that is fueling our enviromental and climate crisis and we must change. Absolutely if the repair involves disconnecting a gas line within the appliance, I would call in the pros, but as this a straightforward plug-in cable replacement, I would be comfortable that the risk is next to nothing if you take all the sensible precautions. *DISCLAIMER: this is my personal opionion as a layman - proceed at your own risk!*

nice to see these things fixed as opposed to dumped... I have a smeg victoria range and one oven gets hot without turning the temp on, so i assume I've got to strip the whole thing down like you did to get access to the back of the knob and change the thermostat... wish me luck!

I just got a new SMEG dual fuel range and all the burners won't stay lit. Also, there is a faint smell of gas. I thought this would be a good quality purchase....

Check you gas injectors are unblocked before going to the hassle of changing thermocouples (see 9mins into this video on how do this - kzread.info/dash/bejne/haaH17GNn9LUmbw.html). This is much easier job as can be done from the top without unscrewing and lifting the hob. In my case (SMEG SY93) they were dirty so restricted the flow of gas meaning there was insufficient heat to activate the thermocouple.

Should have took the back panel off. The thermostat is located there. Thanks for showing where all the screws are. 😂

I will never buy another SMEG anything in Ireland. There are no technicians to carry out repairs if you run into any kind of problems. A disappointing aspect of their after service, considering the cost of their appliances. Will be buying more mainstream brands in future where technicians are plentiful.
