Fixing eBay Junk - 3 Xbox 360s - Part 2 How to Fix Red Ring of Death

Ойындар

In this video I open up a launch edition Xbox 360. This Xbox is one of the early models affected by the notorious "red ring of death" problem. I show you (and learn myself) how to open the case, disassemble the components and reflow the solder around the CPU and GPU. I'll then change the thermal paste and test it.

you should remove thermal compound completely of CPU and GPU (you can safely use some plastic to scrub it off) as it wont have even contact on the surface and it will make hot spots on die, which can result of overheating and damaging some individual parts on chip itself. Good video overall (dirty chips drive me crazy :D) Cheers.

The fan went crazy because you didn't put the plastic shroud back between the fan and heatsink, so there was no airflow being pulled over the heatsink.

@@ohhFIow well he was partially correct, it wasn't a well thought out component, they should have separated the GPU and CPU sides in the wind tunnel shroud. Air follows the path of least resistance. And since the CPU heatsink was 5x the size of the GPU heatsink with more fins the CPU side was getting between 75-90% of the airflow.

You shouldn't use a compressor to clean fans. If you must, hold the fan still, don't let it spin free. These fans are built to operate at a specific speed, if you wind them up with compressed air you can do some damage you may also force crap into the fan itself.

Thermal paste application has been proven it does not matter. As long as the paste isn't electrically conductive you can squirt the entire tube onto the chip and it will cool the same as a small bead. The only difference is one way will make a awful mess.

  • @adapalis

@@billy-waynejeffcoat4828 Too much Thermal paste can change it from effective to an actual insulator. A small bead (pea-sized) is all these components need. Thermal paste is designed to fill the microscopic imperfections in the top of the CPU/GPU die and the heatsink, thermal paste isn't designed for thermal cooling it just is used to transfer heat. So using too much can actually cause issues rather than help.

I have put a lot of thought and reserch into this ball grid array [BGA] failure problem. Another KZreadr Louis Rossmann claims that the problem is that the chips are manufactured poorly. The action of heating up and cooling the chip shifts things around in the chip and temporarily fixes it. I however have a different theory. Rosen flux is a high impedance conductor. It causes mischief in high impedance circuits. As the flux dries out the impedance drops. This results in shorts in the BGA. I believe it is likely you did not do any reflowing because solder needs flux to liquefy and bond properly. Louis Rossmann uses AMTEC NC-559-V2-TF tacky flux on his SMD repairs. I wouldn't attempt any reflow without flooding the chip with that stuff. I still need to come up with a way to remove the flux. Probably mineral spirits followed by alcohol. Enjoyed the tour inside the Xbox 360.

Sounds like you're mixing two misconceptions together. Louis has been very clear about this actually. Nothing to do with solder joints that you can see without permanently ripping the die off the interposer. Ball grid array does not fail in this application. It's the FC-BGA (flip chip - bump grid array) manufacturing that's at fault. The chip die has microscopic pads that are populated with thousands of ~50-100 micron metal alloy particles (bumps). The thing gets pressed against ('welded') the interposer PCB, and cemented in place. That's the connection that eventually fails due to inadequate cementing material (not stable enough withing the package's thermal envelope).

Couple of suggestions: don't use air from an air compressor to clean electronics. Not only can there be moisture present in the compressor, but it can send a static charge to the components ruining them. I have an electric duster for electronics that works really well. The thermal compound doesn't need to be smeared; just put a little drop in the middle and when you install the heatsink, it will spread. This does require some eyeballing to get the correct amount, but if you spread it, you run the risk of high and low spots. The low spots will prevent proper contact and can cause overheating. The overheating may not be apparent in a short play time, but perhaps an hour+ you could have overheating issues. Some people shit on you for the heat gun thing, and to be honest it's not a terrible idea. I've never done it because I don't trust it 100%. I think you'd be better off with the oven method. My understanding is, is that it's more reliable and even works better.

I have been using an air compressor with a moisture filter for more than a decade. Static charge? Nonsense. you only get static if you sandblast the thing. You don't need a lot of air pressure to clean a motherboard and I don't see how a radiator will get damaged by compressed air. The heat gun is a brute force approach but it works most of the times. People often fall in the trap of buying special dedicated equipment which costs an arm and a leg when there is really no need for it, especially for hobby work

Randy most electronics now use esd protection relays. I'm a computer technician. Never had a single issue using air compressors or compressed air cans . he would need a solder reflow station not a "oven" which involves a heat gun soldering iron and solder vacuum. A magnafication camera and special clips attached to mechanical arms. . Also he followed the recomended instructions given by 100% of thermal compound manufactures they recommend tinning both the heatsync and cpu before joining them for maximum coverage and even spread to reduce air between the cpu and heatsync using only the weight of the heatsync is bull and cant guarentee full coverage of the dies unless you over apply the amount of compound which then gets on the mobo or socket and other components which is unnecessary and reckless especially if you're like me and use liquid metal or electro thermal nano silver conductive thermal compounds such as artic silver 5.

I use my compressor to blow out everything. Never had an issue, and for most stuff I use fairly high pressure. At least 50psi for computer stuff. It works fine. Anybody with a compressor should also have a drier on the hose. I use mine for painting, so it goes without saying, but even for stuff like a rachet or grinder you should use dry air to prevent corrosion.

I found out a way to fix the the Xbox 360 slim’s red ring/dot of death.... instead of spending close to $50 on repair parts/tools.....what you do is take everything apart, take the motherboard out, rip out the wiring of all the hardware components, including inside the disk drive, once the motherboard is fully exposed, break it it half with brute force and throw everything in the trash and just stick with Xbox one, since Xbox 360 was just a faulty failed system to begin with... I hope this helps anyone experiencing the same problem, if you want you can take the extra step and take everything outside in a metal trash bin, pour gasoline over everything, completely soaking it, then light it on fire, you’ll feel better afterward. very silly to openly use a heatgun on a board like that. It's very likely that not enough heat was getting under the chip to reflow the solder, and all you did essentially was put unnecessary heat stress on the board for nothing. The only way to reflow those chips properly is to use a reflow station. Also, you should never manually spread thermal paste. That's how you end up with tiny air bubbles that get trapped and prevent heat dissipation. Always let the weight of the heatsink spread the paste for you.

I'm also fairly sure the general directions provided by paste manufacturers suggest spreading manually, but I could be wrong. Perhaps using the pressure of the clamps is best practice, but I've only ever seen spreading with a spreader of some type

If you take a second to think about it logically, allowing the paste to cover the chip itself via heatsink pressure ensures that it fills any tiny crevices in the heatsink. If you just dump the heat sink on top of pre-spreaded paste, theres no chance for the paste to fill those tiny crevices because it's already been spread thin. Oh and MrHunterseeker, My mum has smoked cigarettes for 40 years and doesn't have lung cancer, therefor smoking doesn't cause cancer. See how irrelevant your comment is now?

I'm going to tell you what you did wrong there you didn't use any flux when you heat it up those chips the fox would have helped the sodder reconnect that was your first mistake second mistake was using a regular heat gun instead of using any hot air station heat gun is not concentrated enough and you could do more damage to the board then you need to you obviously have never done this before

the heat gun is just a temp fix. the chips are dead and the heat from the heat gun fixes the chip momentarily so it works for 10 to 30 times then it rrod's again a reflow station doe's the same thing if the solder points broke on a system it would totaly be dead because all patrs need power for it to work and sinds there is a broken connection it cant turn on. sme thing with the towel trick overheating the system for an hour then try again it would not get enough heat to melt the solder it would just heat the dead chip to a point that it would work again. how do i now that? look at video's of lois rossman about apple repairs there he explains all about it. dont say yeah thats a mac not an xbox a board is a board.

Please, I know you're not the only person doing this, but please stop instructing people to use heat guns on ICs. Rework stations are cheap enough these days. I understand that you may not care if you do more damage to these boards than is necessary, but these devices may be around for decades longer with more fixes along the way. I speak from personal experience. I reball PS3 GPUs and can't tell you how frustrating it is when I open up a system just to see that it's popcorned, or worse, when I reball a GPU just to find that it's already been cooked by some idiot doing exactly what you're doing. I'm not saying you're an idiot, I enjoy many of your videos, but this method IS idiotic.

You extended the life of the console by about a couple of weeks. Using a heat gun on any motherboard is a very bad idea. Why do you think measures are there to protect components against heat? I hope you didn't think about reselling the console as your basically advertising yourself as a conman.

  • @licustoms

Definitely not a proper long term fix! One might get lucky trying this but it will not last. Having a professional do a proper reball job on the main chips is the only long term fix that will work. Using a heat gun can easily damage more than it will fix nor is there any way to tell if you did it properly or not since you are basically taking a shot in the dark without having thermal information of the board shown in any way. Just beware this is not sound information for Xbox 360 consoles. The rest about cleaning the internals from dust is fine and necessary if your console looks anything like the dust buildup that this one had.

Upside to your videos - that they are repair videos. Downside: Your practice is very bad. Research and understand the hardware that you are working on. Mechanical drives need white lithium grease along the rails, and this method of reflow damages the boards, rather than fixes them. Look at what heat does to wood over time, for a simple study. Please work on this, before your circle of influence learns tech advice, the WRONG way.
