Fixing Dried out Seal in Pressure Canner

Fixing Dried out Seal in Pressure Canner
I honestly have no clue how old this pressure canner is. But after sitting in storage for a year or so, the seal starts to dry out and lose its flexibility. Then it won't seal properly.
I pulled it out (carefully!!) and soaked it in vegetable oil for a few hours. This got it more than swelled back up, and made for a good snug fit and seal again. No need to buy a new seal. If your canner has been sitting for several years, the seal may be severely dried and brittle. May be better to wet/soak the seal in place, at least at first, to prevent tearing/breaking in an effort to pull it out.

that works for the older seals, if you put veg oil on the newer ones you will ruin them. It softens them to the point they stick to the cooker and dissolve when you remove the stuck lid. If you can find one you should buy it while you still can.

I just was gifted my grandmothers Sears brand pressure canner (I also have her smaller mirro magic one) and it’s been difficult finding a new seal, so I’m thrilled to try this out and to see if it works! Thank you!!

This Presto canner seems indestructible! I actually bought a larger cheaper off brand because it can do 14 pints using a middle rack. It’s handy and works OK, but it’s thinner metal, doesn’t hold temp as steady and is just all around more leaky. But I sure love having both of them rattling on the stove!

Happy to help. If your seal is getting dried out like mine, I'd recommend you get a proper replacement. I just bought one for mine recently. If the seal starts to leak, there is no real risk of the canner exploding, but you could lose a batch of food if the pressures aren't held proper.

@@TomBrueggen Excellent advice! I have the same style Presto bought back in the early 1970's. Another, later model, bought in the 1990's. To avoid the risk of losing a batch of food, each time I replace a gasket, I immediately order a new one. Had to replace the gasket on my newer one about 2 weeks ago. Had 18 pints of ground venison in it when it wouldn't build pressure. (Learned, years ago, in similar circumstances to always have a spare within reach!!) It only took a few minutes to replace it. Easier than the one like yours, BTW. I took that one out to check it and clean it, earlier this week. It sure didn't want to go back in place. But it did! Thanks for sharing good advice for anyone who may have or buy this style National/Presto canner.

One can try Trident Silicone Grease that is used for renewing gaskets on cannister filters used on fish tanks. The product looks like vaseline and comes in 2 ounce plastic can by weight.

Kind of hard for me to say what’s wrong. Hope you figured it out! Sometimes mine gets a bit cross on the slots and jams up. I have a second cheaper cooker/canner that I’ve found if the pot rotates 180° I can’t get the lid on at all. Doesn’t make sense but it happens. Good luck!

Tankster, you've forgotten or you don't know that this canner has a safety pressure release plug. Looking at the upside down lid, it's in the center of the lid. That will blow out before enough pressure builds for the canner to "explode". And, the pressure regulator is designed to start releasing steam when 16 lbs pressure is built up in the canner. Plus, when closed, the lid is captured by metal flanges on it and the canner body. *The canner will NOT explode* when used according the directions included in the manual. Please think about it. TWO pressure release devices AND the lid locked into place., how can there be enough pressure for it to explode. And, with a cracked gasket it is far more likely that the canner will not build pressure, in the first place. I wish people would stop fear mongering about pressure canners. We need more people learning this valuable life skill, IMO. PS & FWIW: I have a little later version of this same canner, purchased new in the early 1970's. Believe it was manufactured in 1971. Used it this week. When the gasket fails, pressure doesn't build. I know, as I've replaced that gasket and pressure release plug, as needed over the years.
