Dr Henoch is my absolute number 1 - If you rank therapists by how much they have helped me with my knee, hip, back and shoulder pain. Yes, that includes therapists who have also given me manual therapy. Without exaggeration, he helped me more with his videos than anyone else. Pure genius

Fantastic take and an overall great conversation! Misinformation on this topic HEAVILY outweighs critical thinking and reasoning. IT DEPENDS always & forever

I can totally relate to being on a "high-horse" about certain rules and guidelines in coaching movement. However, the ever-changing knowledge base about specificity continues to educate us about human movement. The age-old heel elevation remedy started with the wooden board by the squat rack back in the days of gym lore and bro science. Now, clients can wear squat shoes with built-in elevation. Furthermore, Mark Rippetoe makes a statement for the "good-morning" posture in squatting which normalizes it in the sport of powerlifting. Then, there is Ben Patrick, the "kneesovertoesguy" who takes knee flexion to the extreme as being therapeutic. Who are we to say?

Great discussion. Stance width variation also plays a role in when flexion becomes obvious and can be included with the goblet squat, heal height, etc.

I agree with pretty much everything mentioned here, but the main cause for concern with butt wink, in my mind at least, was never the direct consequences of the movement pattern itself in the first place. Rather, it's the possibility that excessive butt wink could be a symptom of poor hip mobility, not properly engaging lower back musculature, tight hamstrings, lack of awareness of pelvis position, or other issues that could cause problems themselves. I'm not saying that you're strawmanning, but glossing over such an important point in this video could be misleading IMO. I wouldn't want the less astute viewer to walk away from this video immediately dismissing their butt wink as something that's probably normal (even if it probably is normal).

Amazing! I always loved Henoch perspective! Really logical and nuanced 👊 so glad you invited him 🤩 does the same apply to deadlifts? Because I see my strength go up if I let my back flex, I can pull more weight without any pain. Should I still try to do it with “neutral” spine? Or flexion is good for pulling more? Thank you! 🤟

Unfortunately I have a low squat mobility. Because of this my spine curves when I go down. I'm gonna do this exercises for sure!

Butt wink happens when there is enough hip flexion and the femur meets the bony edge of the hip socket (+ all the tissues between them), and when there's no more room for the femur to move, the pelvis tilts posteriorly and rounds the lumbar spine along with it. Some people are blessed with shallow hip sockets and others have deep hip sockets. You can try different stance widths and pointing knees out to see which position gives you the most room in your hip socket + elevating your heels to prevent ankles from being the limiting factor. If you repeatedly squat with butt wink your spinal discs will wear out and a herniated disc becomes a possibility. Your discs will not have time to adapt (if they ever do) if you keep doing lumbar flexion/extension under compression every week.

nice discussion. missing though that it is more clearly pointed out that the pelvic tilt will increase the load on the lower back muscles, hence increasing the risk of injuries. that could have been detailed a bit more.

I bought the book “Happy Body” in 2010 written by Jersey Gregorek and his wife….both former world class Olympic weightlifters…which talks about regression squats in order to handle load in the deep squat…worth the investment…and I would throw in high rep body weight partials from the deep squat position up to femur parallell…to secure the strengthening of the insertion area of the lower back muscles and the proximal attachment of the gluteus max…fwiw

Am I missing something?? On the goblet squat his hips are rolling underneath quite significantly (I have this problem.) How is it "fixed?" Im just trying to understand. Is this movement "normal?" I see some people move like statues...

My squats are like at 15:03 but I have dumbbells in each hand that are down at my sides . Of course I think my squats are perfect just like Trump's phone call with Zalinsky :o) But I might lean forward if I'm literally out backpacking in the woods doing a #2
