Fixing a Craftsman 25cc Handheld Blower [Bad Ignition Coil, Loose Cylinder Head Bolts]

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video troubleshoots a Craftsman 25cc Gas Blower, model 358.794700, that was found on the side of the road and would not start. It was discovered that the ignition coil, or magneto, was faulty and needed to be replaced. Additional troubleshooting found that the cylinder head bolts sealing the Cylinder to the Crankcase were loose which was affecting engine compression and preventing the engine from starting.

Hi Tom. Thanks for the comment. My go-to is Meguiar's All Purpose Cleaner concentrate. I have two mixes on hand, 10:1 and 4:1. The 4:1 is the "heavy duty" cleaning ratio and what I used to clean the blower (with some shop towels, toothbrush for crevices, and good old elbow grease). The 10:1 is great for car interiors and other light cleaning.

Leaf blower was given to me but pull cord did not retract all the way. I could still pull enough to start blower. I then opened it up to see what the issue was. After putting back together it does not start anymore. If I put the blower sideways, would this have caused some issues?

Hi Sheerios. Placing the blower on its side is ok. When you opened it up did you only take off the casing to access the pull cord recoil assembly or did you remove additional engine components? Is the recoil engaging when you pull the cord now (i.e. engine turns)?

No, the fuel won't get you much now hearing that it does run for a short period of time. Sounds to me like an issue with the carburetor (even though you've cleaned it). If you're willing to put any more money into it, I'd try picking up one of the cheap chinese knockoff carbs and giving it a try. Also, the fact that it's running for a bit than dying... will it run with the gas cap off/loose? I wonder if the gas cap is not venting properly.

Alvaro, will it run if starting fluid is used? Or, you can pour a very little amount of fuel/oil mixture directly into the cylinder through the spark plug hole. Reinstall the plug and cable and see if it will start. If it does, this will isolate the problem to a fuel delivery issue.

Bo, I'll assume the method you're using to check spark is with the spark plug attached and grounding it to the engine, and that the spark plug is good. Is there a chance you received a bad coil? There are some videos online showing how to check the ignition coil using an ohmmeter to get an idea if it is good. Also, be sure your gap between the ignition coil and flywheel is about the thickness of a business card.
