Usual rule of thumb for cleaning a cylinder after honing it is to use Brakecleen on a paper shop towel and wipe the bore. Throw used towel away. Repeat with new towel and Brakecleen until the towel comes up clean after wiping through. Honing dust is very fine grade and air blasting will not do the job. Nice to see this coming back together and kudos to the shop who did the shaft grinding.

Brakekleen is very similar to dry cleaning fluid and can be used to remove stains from clothing.

A tip for the ultrasonic cleaner is to roughly clean the parts first. They are great are removing small stubborn areas of grime.

Ultrasonic cleaners are good at loosening grime, not cleaning per se. Ideally, before you even put the item in the bath, you've already given everything a good scrub and performed all the prep work in cleaning it as best you could. Most people just dump stuff in and expect miracles. Leaving aside the fact that you wouldn't get that from cheapy units (you need the 10 head industrial types for that kind of cleaning... whereas most of these have what... 2 or 4 heads at best... running off the same board) you won't get any significant cleaning without some initial setup.

70C and a good alkaline degreaser.

This is such a wild ride of a series. Everything is alien in design but weirdly make sense since its mostly simple. Also, really well done getting an AeroPress sponsor, thats a quality sponsor.

Your gasket surfaces should have a 30-55 serrations per inch, in a concentric or spiral pattern, cut with a 1/16" radius, round-nosed tool. Surfaces which can not be serrated should have a surface finish with a multi-directional lay and roughness of 125-250 micro-inch RMS. Best of luck and I'll be watching. :)

That is definitely doing it the hard way. Alec, you should try to barrow a bore gauge from an engine machine shop to measure how concentric the bore is after all that honing.

Biochemist here. If you've a bunch of smaller rusted parts, try heating them up in an acidic solution for a while. You can start off cheap/gentle with either distilled white vinegar or soda that contains phosphoric acid, like Coke. If you want to be more aggressive, you can get hydrochloric acid and then try diluting it less and less with distilled water until you reach a combination of heat and time that works for you.

Evaporust for me, wash off in a parts washer first then overnight in Evaporust. Oil after removal to prevent flash rust. This is what I did when I restored my lathe.

I have to admit, I do like seeing cruddy looking machines cleaned up and polished.

Alec, a co-axial indicator is what (professional) machinists use to align bores for things like this.

For future reference, the quill power downfeed would be a better option to use than raising the table with such a large part. Then you can lock the Z axis in place, and the quill will feed downwards which should keep things more rigid.

I love your videos, man. It’s awesome how you’re using all these tools to fix the steam hammer.

I feel like what you might want to do when taking down those bronze bushings is see how much you can slice off with a portaband before going in and making chips. You might be able to get off some nice big chunks before putting it in the lathe, without taking it down too far.

The reason for the amount of chatter being different was because of how you mounted to bore that point. We think of metal as being 'solid' when it (doing fine machinery and such) is not, it vibrates, all of that unsupported weight hanging off the one side accentuated the vibration that was occurring, if it had been all supported (rubber mats on the outside balance point to absorb vibration and reduce it) there would have been a lot less chatter effect. Think of it like a spring mounted where you were boring the top of the spring has lots of room to vibrate, and the bottom is anchored so less room to vibrate. Best basic description I could give.

Apparently the best solution for the ultrasonic bath is dishwasher tabs, 2 or 3 of them, haven't got around to trying it myself yet 🤪

The vibration made sense , you were dealing with runout on the table moves up on that so it was closing the gap the tool was hanging as it cut . The way that was machined originally was likely a line boring machine

I would love to be a fly on the wall if the local OH&S inspector ever visits Alec's workshop... It wasn't pretty, nor particularly safe...but that is why we tune in... 🙂

I use a brass bristle brush attached to one of my bench grinders to clean fasteners ... makes them look brand new. Heck of a lot better than using a nail to clean the threads, that's for sure.

No matter if you use evaporust or ultrasonic with various chemicals, you really need to mechanically clean the stuff first with a wirewheel etc. You use an excavator to dig a big hole, and a shovel to make it perfect.

Love those hones, I've got a b18b1 in my diningroom that I'll be doing a hone with one that looks very close to the same as the one you've perchesed for your project👌🤙

Watching Alec hold the glass cylinder around minute 3 was more nerve racking than the milling.

The bronze stuffing box bore doesn't need to be a close fit to the ram , it's just to squeeze the graphite fibre packing out against the ram to make a seal, I think there were about 4 coils of packing. there is a smaller one on that valve shaft which will also need packings.

Try going to a machine shop in Boring, Oregon! There's an annual convention with my church in various places in each state and country. However, the two my friend and I have the most fun with is being able to say he's been to Boring convention and Happy convention (in Happy, Texas).

Really like this kind of stuff. I wasn't a huge fan of when you were just making random stuff you could buy at the store because you felt like it, but I can see your passion here and you seem to be enjoying this kind of project. Also, kudos for the tom foolery of getting that part in the mill!!

Would really like to see longer videos, perhaps once you complete a project compile the " shorts" into a full length video to completion as an extra video for those of us who like the start to end kind of thing.

For the bolts and the ultrasonic. Wire wheel on a bench grinder first. Then the sonic will make a huge difference. Or fill it with undiluted simplegreen and heat and sonic for an hour or 2 and all the crust will wipe off

Good call taking it out of the mill for honing. The cylinder Hone will leave behind an abrasive slurry of oil. Nasty stuff to get on the mill

No nonsense heavy duty degreaser from screwfix in the ultrasonic cleaner is a game changer. Use it undiluted.

Just a thought, chuck up a laser pointer and move it until you are able to shine down the inside edge of the sleeve and see if you can line it up that way. Might have been a little faster/easier kind of thing. And I am getting an Aeropress lol

That polishing device Alec used to hone the inside of that cylinder looks straight up medieval. Like it genuinely resembles a torture device called a Pear of Anguish that would be inserted into one's orifices and expanded.

Kerosene for lube and a plug in drill make a flex hone a happy boy. We use rigid Sunnen hones for engines which would also absolutely work but are a much bigger investment.

If I didn’t already have an aeropress I would definitely be buying one for 20% off. Best coffee ever.

Engine block piston cylinder honing tool aka "Engine Cylinder Hone". Attach it to your favorite hand drill, put it into the hole, pull the drill trigger, draw it back and forth until the hole is nice and smooth or your arm is too tired to do it anymore. The tool is self centering and does not require removing the part and moving it to use. Plus they are used to bore out race car engines to use larger pistons that have tighter tolerances than you need or will ever work towards. I would have used it without the mill though a stone replacement may have been needed.

Im 3 minutes in not a a machinist in any suggestion myself and really want to know how @CuttingEdgeEngineering would try to mount this weight in a Bridgeport! Love all of your content would enjoy this collab! Keep going man!

the indicator holder put a longer bar (1/4 round stock) the boring bar needed a heavier cut slower speed

I'm no machinist nor professional, but get yourself an Laser pointer. Maybe there's some lense with a scale, but a dot will do too and put it in the drill. U can then nearly see if you are center at the bottom or not. If you hage to do thies more often maybe a nice ceap solution. Greez from Germany, love your vids but plz make em longer again.
