Fix your headlights for less than $10

You will need...
1) masking tape
2) 600 grit waterproof sandpaper (Home Depot)
3) 1500 grit waterproof sandpaper (Home Depot)
4) newspaper or painting paper (comes in a roll from Home Depot or Lowe's for like $10)
5) water
6) Crystal clear acrylic enamel paint (Home Depot or Lowe's)
7) Approx. 2 hrs to fully dry (in warm weather, allow longer if cold)
Follow these Simple Steps:
1)Tape off the headlight so you don't sand the paint on your car
2) clean headlight with damp cloth pressing firmly
3) wet sand with 600 grit to even glaze over entire headlight, don't leave any lighter, clearer, or unevenly scratched areas. Wipe with damp cloth every so often and air dry for 15 seconds to check.
4) wet sand again but with 1500 grit this time again to even glaze over entire headlight, don't leave any lighter, clearer, or unevenly scratched areas. Wipe with damp cloth every so often and air dry for 15 seconds to check.
5) apply newspaper or painting paper to mask off large area of car for using spray paint to ensure paint does not get on car.
6) shake spray paint and apply in doing motions using glare of light off of headlamp to see areas you missed, silly additional costs as needed (directions are on back of can)
7) wax with car wax for extra shine, apply wax with some force in circular motion, wait to dry to a glazed look, buff clean with dry cotton or microfiber rag
8) enjoy!

I took extra special care with all my sanding. 600, 100, 1500 and they were ready to go. I used the rustoleum crystal clear paint and DISASTER. The paint crazed like crazy. ruined tons of work and needed to be completely sanded off. The clear crazed like a jigsaw puzzle and looked terrible. Everything here is great, but that stuff left me crazy.

Awesome DIY video! I just want to add... after following these steps and after clear coating, it's best not to apply any wax, polish etc. to the headlights. The clear coat needs to cure properly. If you apply a wax 2 hours later the clear coat won't be able to "breath" properly to cure. The wax will surround it and seal in the clear coat. So it is best to leave your headlights in direct sunlight for 24/48 hours or under direct UV light about a few feet away from the lights. I followed this DIY after watching other videos. I highly recommend using the Rustoleum crystal clear enamel just like in the video. I tried 2 other clear paints and they are complete crap and you will end up with haze or small "freckles". If you do have a pretty bad orange peel or in other words, small bumps, you can use a polish a few days later to even everything out. Good Luck everyone!

for any concerns about UV protection (prevent discoloration over time), this method will work, but one also needs to add some UV protective wax or ceramic UV sealant AFTER the crystal clear HAS CURED. the product rustoleum crystal clear used in this video has limited UV protection. It is more or less a durable hard shell, but not the same as a automotive UV clear...factory headlights have a coating that has a UV clear, and obviously that degrades over time. So to restore you have to think about this in the same way that factory manufacturers headlights are produced. There is a hard shell with a UV component. So when you restore, the hard shell is restored, but then you will need to give it a UV coating to help produce a long lasting shell that will not fade and discolor over time. There are various top coatings that will do this. Look for a standard auto wax that has a UV component...almost all of them do. I would NOT use a cleaner wax...this has a fine abrasive...Some have good results with ceramic sealants that isn't really a wax per se but a longer lasting coating that produces a harder shell than conventional wax. I have used mothers ceramic spay wax ...it's easy..it does not leave a color film..and ii has a UV component. Like all auto body "waxes" headlights are no different. It's a maintenance item: you will need to clean it periodically and apply new "wax". This more than anything preserves the headlight to a clear finish that will last. For those who live in areas where road salt in the winter is a common element, this finish wax maintenance needs to be done far more often. And of course, parking outside in the elements is going to degrade faster than a car that is garaged. The best rule of thumb is not allow the headlight to begin to fade...preventing that from happening is a task that might involve simply making it a once every two months task...something like that. Where you clean the headlight and apply a UV wax or sealant.

I did this almost 2 years ago with the Rustoleum 2x UV resist, and had some minor crazing. After letting it harden for a couple of months, some wet sanding and polishing improved matters. While most of the lenses still look good and vision is excellent, the paint is starting to flake off on the top surface. Previous to this, I had tried a rather expensive headlamp coating spray formulated to be cured with UV lights. That lasted less than a year and didn't look as good as Rustoleum. Next time, I'm trying 3M's or Sylyainia's UV sealant.

Ya what the other guy said and you are probably better off not going that high in grit sand paper like 1000 is about what I am thinking but definitely needs to be cleaned with alcohol before painting and I think 2k clear is probably the play if it's worth it to you and or you have enough to paint before like $25 for a can that will mostly go bad is not ideal I just did mine and was wet sanding like 3 or 4 days later and cleaning with alcohol and the paint just gummed up and came off I was using the Rust-Oleum universal clear so I don't know it probably would have been fine if I didn't use the alcohol but still

You need to finish sanding with 3000 grit 3M trizact, and use an hvlp paint gun and two part clear with U.V. protectant you can buy from any body shop supply store. You'll be able to see the 1500 grit sanding marks in the sun, and that clear your using wont last 1.5 - 2 years tops. Also, the proper sanding should be 5 steps. not two. 600,800,1000,1500,3000.
