Hey, thanks for your video. I’m doing frameless doors with wood frame. I am using this product but it’s too hard to work with for big areas and hard to sand it. Can I use regular mud for the first two coats and use Alex Flex for the last coat just where might be the future crack? Or the opposite way, Alex Flex first then two coats of regular mid to get a nice finish. Can I mix this product with water to make it softer? Thank you 🙏🏻

Nice video.👍 Thx. How long did you wait between dry times using DAP flex?..

It totally depends on how thick the coat is. This one was thin and dried completely in an hour or two. The instructions ask you to let the first coat dry completely before adding a second, so err on the side of letting it set up longer than you’d think and you’ll be good to go 👍

One year later. Has the crack showed back up?

Nice! Thanks for the video. How has this held up since you did it?

No problem! It’s been true to its word, no cracking (though with shifting, what we did notice was that it bulges slightly when the two surfaces pinch together). It’s only noticeable in certain light, and since the elasticity prevents the cracking we’re ok with it in this case 👍

The spackle won't crack but would the paint? Sorry if dumb question, I have a large crack down the corner of a room ceiling to floor. It's been stable for years but don't want to look at it anymore. Wonder if this product will work of the crack is too large.

Not a dumb question at all! Latex paint (the vast majority of interior paint) forms a somewhat flexible skin when it dries, unlike oil paint that tends to ‘crack’. That said, we have seen all sorts of weird things happen with paint- so it’s impossible to say for sure that it won’t. If the crack is relatively stable, this product might be very ideal for you. It would certainly be the least invasive way to address a crack of that size (and a very reasonable place to start). Let us know how it goes (if you decide to give it a try) 👍

Does this product works with textured walls also?

It will prevent reoccurring cracks, but you may find it challenging to match the texture with this product 👍

What grit did you use for sanding?

  • @RefreshHomeImprovements

we use a slightly lower grit for this product, as its a little harder to sand than regular compound/spackle. We did the rough sanding with anywhere from 120/180 and finish with something like a 220

Can you use this product with mud tape?

That’s a great question. Generally speaking, joint compound is better than spackle for taping. We’ve never tried this particular product with tape, so you’ll have to let us know 👍

Fiberglas bedding tape would have been nice.

If you’re using conventional spackle, it would be required, but since I’ve started using this flexible product I haven’t used any mesh. The drawback to the mesh obviously is much more spackle required to cover it, which means much more feathering out much more sanding. so for small cracks like this the flex spackle is a huge timesaver and has so far proven to be reliable for me

So you don’t know for sure if that’s gonna crack again in a couple years?

That’s really the purpose of this specific product- its for areas that are constantly shifting. Rather than doing the extensive work it might take to fix the problem for good (which in an ideal scenario you would)- instead you would use this flexible spackling that has the elasticity to shift WITH the surfaces without cracking at all 👍

Why not use the sparkling when you join the dissimilar materials from the start.

at this stage there’s already a coat of latex paint on the area. Additional primer wouldn’t do a whole lot 👍

Hmm, thats a great question! We don’t believe it works like that, but we also can’t say for sure (we’ve never tried that technique). You’d have to check with the folks at DAP to get a concrete answer on that (or you could try it out and see for yourself)👍
