Thank you! The contractor said they had to rip the drywall off, but I knew there had to be a better way for just a small crack :)

To be fair, everyone has a different procedure for their aptitude’s. We also had to learn this one.. and I will add, applying a second coat of caulking and letting it fully dry and visually check for shrinkages then apply your coating and this is because the caulking will shrink and dry out from inside and this is why the second caulking is important. So yes we have employed this however we usually tape/or mud, retexture and paint. And yes, sometimes cut out the area and install a nice patch job. But as long as everyone is happy , 🍻

It is probably worth checking to see if the reason the crack formed was due to the drywall being loosely held to the trusses, e.g. with nails. If so, you can screw it in on both sides of the crack first, should make the repair last longer.

It will (from the inside) shrink (1 year follow up on numerous projects) if only 1 coat of caulking. I now do 2 coats of caulking , full cure between. Then of coarse paint/texture.

@@BlossomPainting what do you think about using a skim coat of drywall mud or a cement based patching mud like planipatch? I'm wondering if this will help with keeping the paint from cracking or not.

  • @BlossomPainting

@@celticstephenhill havent used “planipatch” never even heard of it here in Vancouver Canada. The reasoning for 2 applications of caulk is to simplify material requirements and application methods. This is much faster than applying mud , fanning it out and sanding. First caulk is to fill the inner void and provide the mass for the backing. The second caulking is fill in shrinkage of first caulking and to finish, smooth or textured. Then paint as needed. ( make sure the paint matches , it’s very noticeable when it’s not a match. And use a matte finish to hide imperfections ). Hope ur ceilings look nice. Edit , but the “tape and mud” is the classic method and will look like new when done right, but that is longer and a little more expensive. It’s all up to the outcome desired. But caulking method when done right is just as good in my opinion and our customers. So

@@BlossomPainting I'm in Winnipeg and I came across planipatch at either Lowe's or Rona so I'm sure it's in one of the big box reno stores in Vancouver. It's a neat product actually...a mix between drywall mud and cement. Comes as a powder and is applied exactly like drywall mud, except it's much stronger once it dries. I like the double application idea too and as long as I can find a good paintable caulk (that doesn't leave shiny spot) I'll probably go that route.

It does work on small cracks & "scratches". Do not forget, calk srinks, so it might need a second layer. Also regular glue works, but srinks even more & definitely needs a second layer of calk or spakle.

To ensure the crack doesn’t come back you should go into the attic and lay down strips of wood along the crack with construction adhesive between the wood and drywall then screw from the bottom up through the wood along the crack. I’d personally use a joint compound and tape then sand to blend after securing with wood but for small cracks like this I think the caulking would do just fine. I just wouldn’t skip securing the crack with wood because it’ll likely crack again on its own in the future.

yeah securing it is a must, caulk is a good idea though as a final top filler because it can stretch

Thanks for watching & this happens all the time to homes. Homes contract, expand, shift, & sink over the years leading to stress on the structure. Stress can lead to cracks in the ceiling & wall. This keeps us busy over the years patching or filling the cracks. Common products are drywall mud, spackle, or caulk. We used drywall mud for this crack however as time went on, the winter temperatures and summer temperatures made the crack reappear. After using this caulk, it has been great ever since and the crack has never come back. This caulk allows the specific area/crack to expand ever so slightly as well as contract as the temperature and seasons change. Keep us posted on your project. 😎👍

Kev tkw Thanks for watching & sharing your question! Great question & yes it can 100% be painted over without sanding it. We painted this exact ceiling a few days later & it looks great! We recommend finishing the caulk very neatly & clean so you don’t need to sand. You’ll notice if you sand this product, it’s leaves more of a rubber substance rather than a cement dust when sanding a wall. In most projects, exterior projects lead to painting over this product. I'm gonna try this soon but I'm thinking about doing a skim coat of mud or planipatch over the caulk once it's dried.. But I also imagine wiping as much excess caulk off while it's still wet would help a lot.
