BE SURE TO CHECK OUT OUR WEATHERSTRIPPING VIDEO:
• USE THIS WEATHERSTRIP ...
Exterior Doors always get small gaps of light around the bottom corner. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will show you how to fix light gaps around your doors! It really just comes down to one easy trick--CORNER SEALS.
HOW TO FIX LIGHT GAPS AROUND EXTERIOR DOORS:
1) Find/buy corner seals--these are little wedge-shaped pieces of foam weatherstrip/weatherstripping with peel-off adhesive backs.
2) Remove adhesive back from corner seal tape / kit.
3) Open door and wipe down or clean lowest part of jamb just above threshold.
4) Affix corner seal to lowest portion of door jamb. Make sure corner seal is sitting directly down on threshold. Make sure skinny part of corner seal is pointing into house, and thick part is pointing towards stop trim on the jamb.
5) Close door--check for light gaps remaining around lower part of door.
6) If necessary, place a second corner seal above installed corner seal. You can also STACK corner seals to create more thickness.

I bought 10 packs. We put them on wrong, naturally. But we needed a double row anyway because the gap was so big. Expensive because we needed so many, but we love them. It was a repair that this old couple could do by ourselves, and it worked. Thank you so much.

For a large gap under the knob side of the door, remove the top screw of the top hinge and replace it with a longer screw of the same dimension. This will pull the door in and remove the bottom gap. Hope this helps. Jon in rural BC, Canada

Great advice. An inexpensive method of eliminating the small gap between the door and the door jamb. I always watch your channel. I like your presentation methods that simplify most tasks. I used to be carpenter and most of what I learned about carpentry was it’s mostly common sense. My building trades teacher would always tell us that. My Dad was a carpenter and he would tell me the same thing. I also learned to solve problems to start with simple to complex. For example your most recent video on using weather strips to block out light instead of moving the entire door.

I figured that out when I was digging through my father-in-law’s tools after he passed. He also had 2 inch wide rolls of doubled sided sticky foam that worked great when ran it pretty much across the whole top and down most of the sides of the door to my garage. I had some big gaps. It worked great. I stuck the one side to the door and then simply did not peel the other side off.

@The Honest Carpenter. Thanks Ethan for being very specific and informative in how to use the door corner seals. The instructions included with the seals don't mention which way the thin or thicker parts of the wedge are to be placed. Common sense would say to place the thicker part towards the door seal and the thinner part allows the door to easily close. Hope you and your family stay safe and well.

Excellent tip! I would suggest making sure the hinge screws are good as well. They often come with tiny 3/4" screws, and I find replacing them with 2" or 3" will help a lot, as you can grab a little more wood.

Can you explain more grab a little more wood from where

  • @canebro1

    @canebro1

    2 жыл бұрын

@@darlynfox829 Sure! You have studs that make up the door frame, and then a second stud up against that which good floor to ceiling. (search "house door frame construction" and look at some of the pictures). The little screws that some with the hinges just barely grab into that first stud, and with use can become loose. If you get some nice long screws, they will grab both studs, not only giving more security, but also with so much more wood to grab onto it will take a lot more to become loose.

Huh. I mean I have no idea what the scope of the contract was or how much he charged you, but if he was replacing the door and the frame (which is typically, but not always how it's done), then your newly installed door should have sealed up nice and square and not had any gaps without needing one of these. But if someone was just slapping up a door for you on the cheap because your dog scratched the shit out of the old one or something, then I guess that makes sense.
