BE SURE TO CHECK OUT OUR WEATHERSTRIPPING VIDEO:
• USE THIS WEATHERSTRIP ...
Exterior Doors always get small gaps of light around the bottom corner. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will show you how to fix light gaps around your doors! It really just comes down to one easy trick--CORNER SEALS.
HOW TO FIX LIGHT GAPS AROUND EXTERIOR DOORS:
1) Find/buy corner seals--these are little wedge-shaped pieces of foam weatherstrip/weatherstripping with peel-off adhesive backs.
2) Remove adhesive back from corner seal tape / kit.
3) Open door and wipe down or clean lowest part of jamb just above threshold.
4) Affix corner seal to lowest portion of door jamb. Make sure corner seal is sitting directly down on threshold. Make sure skinny part of corner seal is pointing into house, and thick part is pointing towards stop trim on the jamb.
5) Close door--check for light gaps remaining around lower part of door.
6) If necessary, place a second corner seal above installed corner seal. You can also STACK corner seals to create more thickness.

I love these "Straight to the point, no BS" videos.
I bought 10 packs. We put them on wrong, naturally. But we needed a double row anyway because the gap was so big. Expensive because we needed so many, but we love them. It was a repair that this old couple could do by ourselves, and it worked. Thank you so much.

For light gaps not big gaps

For a large gap under the knob side of the door, remove the top screw of the top hinge and replace it with a longer screw of the same dimension. This will pull the door in and remove the bottom gap. Hope this helps. Jon in rural BC, Canada
OMG I’ve been trying to solve this problem for years! Got light coming in, drafts and bugs. Thank you for the honest information, simple and affordable. New subscriber for sure.
Very helpful, and to the point. A lot less daunting than replacing weather strips.
Omg this is such an easy fix. After 5 years with my house I was about to replaced my door and pay $500! Thanks so much!
you just solved one of my door problem, i have exactly that issue on one of my doors. Now I know what to do, Thank you.
I had no idea that little gap had such an easy solution! I'm no dummy, just an older female that's not very savvy about these things. And, it's harder than ever to get a handyman to come and take care of these little issues. I appreciate your channel and I look forward to you teaching me more tips for maintaining my home myself!

After watching, I think 10 seconds is sufficient. :)
I’ve used those foam pieces and they work great. And yes it’s much easier than trying to adjust the door.
Yep, this was a good 2 part video. Helps me tons. Thanks for the tips and keep them coming.
What a GREAT video. I was already using these, but stacking 2 was EXACTLY the advice I needed. Thank you, thank you!
Great advice. An inexpensive method of eliminating the small gap between the door and the door jamb. I always watch your channel. I like your presentation methods that simplify most tasks. I used to be carpenter and most of what I learned about carpentry was it’s mostly common sense. My building trades teacher would always tell us that. My Dad was a carpenter and he would tell me the same thing. I also learned to solve problems to start with simple to complex. For example your most recent video on using weather strips to block out light instead of moving the entire door.
Great idea! My wife has been after me for years to fix this issue and I couldn't come up with one that worked well and looked good too.
Wow, this is awesome. I just had a feather River door with sidelights installed on my house and I noticed this morning a little light coming in through the corner of the door. I went into panic mode and went directly into You-tube and find your video. Thank you for such a great recommendation. I live in MD and winter is around the corner and the last thing I want is my utility bill to skyrocket. Thank you for being such an honest carpenter.
I figured that out when I was digging through my father-in-law’s tools after he passed. He also had 2 inch wide rolls of doubled sided sticky foam that worked great when ran it pretty much across the whole top and down most of the sides of the door to my garage. I had some big gaps. It worked great. I stuck the one side to the door and then simply did not peel the other side off.
I just got mine in today and yes i see a huge difference! Thanks, great tip😀
Thanks for this tip, I recently changed the weatherstripping on the front door, and that little gap was driving us nuts!
Very helpful, straight and to the point! Thank you for getting to it, making it short and sweet! Thank you, thank you!
The simplest solution is usually the right one! Thanks.
Just what I needed! Fantastic video. Super helpful and concise. Thank you!
Honestly, looking at my door, this is a miracle! Thanks for the tip.
your videos are great . .,you talk about what is actually on the heading....straight to the point ..thank you
FINALLY! someone who helps me fix the weird old door on our weird old rental. All the other videos are for modern houses OR old houses that are being redone to perfection ala This Old House. Thank you SO MUCH kind sir!!!! Im liking and subscribing!
Thank you! My new door came with these but I didn’t know what they were or for. Just dug them out of the trash, installing tomorrow!
Yes new doors usually come with these but I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t know what they were for, I do now. Thanks man!

Nothing stays on. Itbis a constant problem. I use a draft stopper stuffes toy thing. Always kicking it back over door bottom. Pain in A.
Thank you so much! I was sporadically finding dead June bugs around the door on the inside. Exterminator said it was due to the small cracks at the bottom of the door and I needed it sealed. I Found your video, ran to Lowe's and found them, 2 in a pack less than 4$. Thank you. 🙏🏽
Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I'm exhausted trying to find a solution for this problem. You've saved my day.
Thank you SO MUCH for putting this out for us. This will be a tremendous help for our back door so no bugs can get in. Judi
You, good sir, are a star! Thanks, I was totally getting stressed out about that one!
Ethan, thanks so very much for sharing that with us! I live in a older house that was built in 1937. The doors are beautiful along with a lot of custom wood work that was done with the use of very few power tools. I don’t want to do anything that will alter the original doors and trim work. This looks like a great solution to my problems and thanks again for sharing!
Thank you! This is exactly what I needed!
Thank you for the video, i wasnt sure if i had to replace my door but this is a great alternative. The gap was driving me nuts, im heading to Lowe's today !!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! After watching this I went to HD and bought several packages for a poorly fitting door. Theses wedges work perfectly going half way up the door. Finally, a solution to a long standing problem. A HUGE thank you!
Living in a 1980's log cabin this is definitely something I need. Thank you !

I never new these existed before, your videos are awesome you get right to the point without all the useless chat that some have. I just looked and HD carries them under $5
Perfect. This was so helpful.
Thanks, followed your instructions and it addressed the issue...
Omg!! Thank you!! We have a problem like that and my husband didn’t really care for it. But we live in Minnesota and winter is really cold here. I’m definitely doing this!! Thanks :)
Finally found the solution to my issue, thanks!
You are a LIFE SAVER!!! Thank you!!!!!!!! I'm so happy I stumbled upon your video! I live in an apartment and there is a huge light gap at the top of my door, then all around it there is a lot of space for insects to just crawl on in. It is SO FRUSTRATING! There is weather stripping but its ineffective and cheap. THIS, however, is my answer. The Product in this video!!!!!!! THANK YOU!
God Bless You! I've been struggling to figure out what this piece was for so long! No more unwanted light (or potential pests!)
It worked!! Thank you. I even put it in with the wrong direction of the thick side and it still works fine.
Thank you so much! I'm going to try it but this is so much easier than sanding shims, etc...
Yes, very helpful!! Thank you so much for doing this short and informative video.
Just the thing I needed!! Definitely helpful and so simple and practical. Thank You so much
Thank you good sir. Great easy hack for homeowners or landlords.
Extremely useful tips. Thanks for sharing.
@The Honest Carpenter. Thanks Ethan for being very specific and informative in how to use the door corner seals. The instructions included with the seals don't mention which way the thin or thicker parts of the wedge are to be placed. Common sense would say to place the thicker part towards the door seal and the thinner part allows the door to easily close. Hope you and your family stay safe and well.
Totally awesome... you rock... got mine ordered and will install Monday
OMG! Thank you so much! This solution is so easy that even this senior lady can actually do it myself!!
Now that was awesome! Just looking at that issue today in my door downstairs, with that cool Canadian air coming through. Thanks!
I've got the problem of light at bottom. I thought that the answer would be as you described. Thanks. Winter is coming.
Thanks for the Great Advice. I have been so busy around my home with all of your videos guiding me. My husband said to me. Please take a break from the videos because my hobbies and fixing usually includes him. So Happy to have seen your very first video and your Great Personality.

Excellent tip! I would suggest making sure the hinge screws are good as well. They often come with tiny 3/4" screws, and I find replacing them with 2" or 3" will help a lot, as you can grab a little more wood.
@darlynfox829
2 жыл бұрын
Can you explain more grab a little more wood from where
@canebro1
2 жыл бұрын
@@darlynfox829 Sure! You have studs that make up the door frame, and then a second stud up against that which good floor to ceiling. (search "house door frame construction" and look at some of the pictures). The little screws that some with the hinges just barely grab into that first stud, and with use can become loose. If you get some nice long screws, they will grab both studs, not only giving more security, but also with so much more wood to grab onto it will take a lot more to become loose.
The BEST! I do not have to worry about the bugs crawling through. Thank you so much for the easy and simple fix.

I just bought my first home and the door was driving me crazy and I came across this video and I am now going to follow this guy because I have a lot of work to do. I did buy diesel wedges and they do work perfectly thank you so much
Sir you just saved me tons of money on a new door! Bless you!!
Thank you so much. I didn't know these existed! You're the man!
Dude I am NOT a handy girl but your videos have helped me fix things I never thought I could and make it so easy. Thank you SO much!!!!
Thanks so much. Just ordered this in white. I knew there had to be an easier alternative.
That is exactly what I need; thank you!
I love the advice, thanks Morty.
I really liked your technique when doubling the pads!
Just installed one. Fixed the problem.
I knew there had to be an easy remedy for this. At a previous house we had a new door installed and I remember seeing the installer slap one of those at the bottom of the door frame but when we moved to a new home I had temporarily forgotten the solution. Thanks for the short-to-the-point video!! Very good and appreciated!

Huh. I mean I have no idea what the scope of the contract was or how much he charged you, but if he was replacing the door and the frame (which is typically, but not always how it's done), then your newly installed door should have sealed up nice and square and not had any gaps without needing one of these. But if someone was just slapping up a door for you on the cheap because your dog scratched the shit out of the old one or something, then I guess that makes sense.
You rock! Love your videos! Great solutions and easily explained. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much. I’m going to find these and fix my drafty doors.
Thanks for this tip as was going to try and alter the door.
Great tip! I've had this problem since the shipping piece fell off my jam. Was not aware these were available. Thanks!!
I can’t believe I just came across this. This is the exact problem I’ve been trying to address. Was about to hire someone to adjust the door. Thanks for saving me so much money!
OMG! I had no idea there was such an easy practical solution to a nagging problem. Thank you for sharing!
So helpful. Thank you.
Thanks Ethan! I have been putting off fixing the light gap( I have bronze wool there now). You are awesome!
I just watched your video on KZread and this is exactly what I need. We're in Melbourne, Australia and have spider's crawling in the gap so I'm going to Bunnings now to buy some. Great advice, thank you 👍
OMG indeed! I am not a handywoman or a carpenter. I know nothing about these things and just want to prevent wolf spiders and their food from entering my home. THANK YOU! I have been looking at these two little gaps for years and had no idea that I am not alone.
Love your content! Simple and doable for anyone! Recently I fixed my annoying bedroom door that wouldn’t stay shut with your instructions! 💪Thank you! Keep up the great job!

Thank you! Been worried about bugs getting in through the gap on mine and didn't know how easy the solution would be!
Another notch for my mental toolkit. Thanks!
Thanks! I was going to buy a new door, but will try this & the weather stripping first.
Awesome fix
Great product. Need this. Thanks.
Can the solution really be that easy and simple? Wow!! A million thanks!!! Subscribe!
Thanks for this video. I purchased a screen door and it came with two of these. Now I know what they are for. I might try this fix on a couple of commercial doors where I have issues with debris blowing inside the building.
Fantastic. Thanks so much for this video, live in a apartment & have issues with seeing light through two sides of the door. Going to invest in these little pads. Hopefully Ace or Home Depot carries them.
So freaking helpful! I manage an older community of townhomes. Thank you!!!!!
I learn something new and useful every time I watch, thanks
