Five Things I HATE About My Kawasaki Versys 650: A One-Sided Kawasaki Versys Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I love my Kawasaki Versys 650 very much, but the Versys is not exactly a perfect motorcycle. Like all bikes, the Kawasaki Versys (1000 or 650) has its annoying flaws. Part one of a pair of Kawasaki Versys review videos covers the cons of this great motorcycle, including the stock seat, stock mirrors, stock windscreen, the difficulty of performing certain versys maintenance tasks, and the overall top-heaviness and versys seat height. If you're considering buying yourself a Versys, watch this overview/review to discover all the negative qualities of the motorcycle so that you can make an informed decision before purchasing your own Versys 650 or Versys 1000.

Hi Dork, I'm pleased you took my comment with some humour as I enjoyed hearing Your opinions about the bike I own. I bought mine aged 74 then rode it from Eastern England to Gibraltar, 4000 miles return trip via France, Spain and Portugal. It's the most reliable and "Comfortable " bike I've owned, hence my previous remark I made. Stay safe.

Chain maintenance: For every bike that I owned that did not have a center stand, I just used a simple car jack under one side of the swing-arm, usually on the right side to balance out with the side-stand. Bike will be tilted, of course, but its enough to get the rear wheel off the ground. Much easier than moving bike back and forth to lube the chain (used to do that too).

T-Rex Racing makes a very good centerstand for the '15-on 650s. Once properly set up, and it's not a ten-minute install, it's one of the very easiest centerstands to use I've ever had, even better than my '67 BSA was. The Motowerk lowering kit was absolutely necessary for the Missus. A Sargent Low saddle, too. Motorcycle chains need to be lubed every 300-500 miles, plus whenever they get wet. That rule has given me good chain life for decades. All of my own chains have gone at least 40K miles; the last one on my ZX1100E went more than 54K, That's almost competitive with shaft drives, excepting that you have to do the lube. PJ1 Blue Label, incidentally, for O-rings and PJ1 regular before that.

Nah, I’m getting those extenders; I have yet to see about the maintenance; yes, bike is tall, which makes it nice to ride and be at a similar height than small suvs. First mod for me? I was also scared to use the rear stand on it until i saw a guy at the dealership do it on his own and then he explained to me that once both sides are attached on the hooks you just pull and dont look back. I have done a few times like that without thinking about it and so far it has worked i have not dropped it.

Thanks for the video of the same roads I ride my Versys 650 on! I've had mine about a month and am getting it dialed in slowly. I have the Givi windscreen now , too. Much improved. I have it adjusted below the lowest setting so it almost touches the fairing. I use a floor jack & block of wood at the rear of the reinforced part of the cat to get the rear tire just off the ground for chain maintenance (The kickstand still touches the ground and supports some weight). My bike came with a big (very comfy) Russell all day seat that i will probably sell. I want lower and narrower. I might go 1 tooth bigger on the front sprocket for less buzziness at 65 + mph. According to the digital speed signs going thru Millersburg on Old Salem, my speedo reads 52 when 50 is actual . Thanks again.

The V1000 seat is also not nearly as sloped forward as the 650. We cured that on wife's bike with a Terry Adcock custom seat. Also my V1000 has a center stand stock which makes maintenance much easier. Add in more power, equal fuel mileage Ang my 2016 Versys 1000 is a fantastic bike.

Chain maintenance without center/paddock stand: Material: 2 roller stands, 2' of 1 1/4 slotted angle iron, 4' of 2x4 lumber. Directions: Cut angle iron into 12" pieces and place parallel on the floor. Cut two 1" pieces of 2x4 and screw angle iron into the middle of the 4" side. Take the rollers out of the stands (roller's axle will retract) an fit into holes that are approx. 9" apart. Depending on the width of the roller, cut remaining 2x4 to fit between the 2x4/angle iron/roller set-up. Nail, screw, glue, pocket hole (choose your favorite method of sticking two pieces of wood together) 2x4's to make a box. It doesn't work as well as a paddock (a.k.a. rear) or center stand but for about $50 you can work on the chain in your garage and also have two roller stands (which come in handy if you do woodworking). Oh and use a trampoline to mount your bike : )

@@DorkintheRoad Thanks. There is room for improvement. My design works best if you make sure the bike is perpendicular to the rollers and you put a shim under the kickstand to make it about 80 degrees with respect to the ground. Otherwise the bike will tend to creep towards the edge of the rollers. Boat trailers have a keel roller. It's a roller that tapers towards the center which will help to keep the bike centered. My solution was just a quickie.

Hey Dork, nice videos, watched them both! How do you feel about the brakes on your Versys? I have a '07 with ABS and everytime i practice emergency braking, i am terrified by how bad it is. The front end dives, the rear wants to lift off and the ABS starts pumping like crazy trying to balance the bike while alltogether my braking distance becomes enormous! Together with the already bad stopping power of the front brake, it is the main reason i am considering to sell my Versys for something lower, more modern, even though i am a 6'3" rider...

  • @DorkintheRoad

Honestly, I haven't done enough emergency braking practice with this thing. I have found the brakes to be a little uninspiring and I've had the rear ABS kick in in situations where I didn't think I should be even close to locking up the front wheel. I need to get out and do some practice. Thanks for the reminder.

Dork in the Road Hi what’s up? I’m at like 10,000 miles on mine. What if I upgrade to super awesome break pads when I replace my pads? Have you tried that? Do you think I should? Ya hat about steel brake lines? I read that can make the brakes grabbier too. Would grabbier even be better since the abs might function differently if the bike had upgraded pads and lines. What are your thoughts? Ps. I like my windshield, I keep it all the way down and it blasts me in the face unless I tuck down behind it.

I just got a 2016 Versys 650 a couple weeks ago and have much the same issue with the seat height and pillion seat. I tippy toe this bike on both sides, so I usually have my left foot down and generally only on the balls of my foot with my right foot on the rear brake. Hardly ever shift out of first because of having to pivot to the right just to get to the shifter at a stop. It's really annoying. But I wouldn't give this bike up even if it meant being on one more suited to my height. I absolutely adore it. Glad to have found it so quickly after having gotten my endorsement in November. Do you waddle the bike backward, or do you walk it backward off the seat? That would be one of my most hated things about the Versys lol. Having to walk it backward out of a parking spot and finding a spot that won't make shifting between the left and right side, an awkward challenge. After having owned this bike for a couple years, any advice you could offer to someone new to riding one? Take care, and stay safe!

  • @DorkintheRoad

    @DorkintheRoad

I can waddle it backwards while sitting on it, but pretty much only on solid ground. I try and park proactively where I can just pull out forward if possible. As far as advice, I'd recommend the cheap seat mod if you haven't done it already. It levels it out and reduces the sliding forward at every stop. I made a video explaining it if you're curious. Cost me ten bucks and made a huge difference. Versys is a great bike! You made a good choice.

I’m only 5’8” with a 30” leg also and have replaced the seat with a lower one which uses gel padding, it’s narrower too. I’ve also bought a centre stand to make chain maintenance easier. Why bike manufacturers tend not to fit these as standard I don’t know! When I mount the bike I grab the bars, have my left foot on the peg and climb on that way, same for getting off, that gets rid of the leg swing anxiety!

I had to comment on this, hopefully to help potential buyers, coincidentally those are 4 things I also had issues with my 2012 Honda NC700X, which is a direct competitor to the Versys more then the VStrom is. Both Versys and NC700X have tiny 17 inch front wheels which makes them both more street oriented as supposed to the 19 inch front wheel on the VStrom, so I will compare. 1. Wind turbulence, the main reason I sold the NC700, it is a curse on these type of bikes, in my case it really didn’t matter which windshield I used, I tried 3 different ones, they all sucked, am guessing it has to do with the peek fairing design and how tall these bikes are, the win buffering is a night mare. Note, some naked bikes don’t have wind protection but their design doesn’t create wind issues either so they are actually more serene and enjoyable to ride than these tall peek bird nose bikes. 2. The slant on the seat, yes it is a pain to constantly slide forward. Honda tried to fix the issue in 2015 by changing the surface in the seat cover material so a less sleek texture, it is a real issue, I made an adjustment to the seat front bracket to be lifted and it helped some what. 3. Center stand, the Honda was not a top heavy bike, it has very low center of gravity but still, lifting 400+ Lbs is a journey, and you better have off having someone to help you, I did find that leaning the bike towards me and just articulating on one single leg is the stands made it safer and more duable for me to handle it by myself. 4. Am glad Honda had a regular square swing arms that made it very easy to lubricate the chain without the use of the center stand. 5. The NC700X had regular cheap rear view mirrors that worked fantastic not an issue, also the Honda had a single halogen headlamp that was fantastic, it lid up the street amazingly, the best I ever experienced, proof that you don’t need LED, if the reflector is well designed, one single halogen bulb is sufficient. 6. Excellent low center of gravity, the NC700 feels the most light and nimble of all bikes I ever tried, it was a pleasure to maneuver at low speeds, not top heavy at all, here is why, the design, the cylinders didn’t shoot up to the gas tank, the engine was low on the ground with cylinder heads shooting towards the front wheel. The gas tank was not on top, it was underneath the seat, they the bike is designed with all the heavy parts below the rider, leaving top available to become a trunk, perfect to pick up beer and milk on your way home from work. 6. Issue with the gas thank, to fuel the bike, you have to lift the rear passenger seat, that meant unloading all my camping gear at every fuel stop, what a pain in the rear. 7. The height issue, I am 5’8 with 31 inch insteam, I could almost flat foot that was not the issue, but throwing a leg over was the issue, here is the truck, do it while the bike is on its kickstand, that is when you hop on the bike. 8. You realize how big the issue is with the height when you visit pleases like the tail of the dragon on the Carolinas, where everything is a hill and soft grounds, no flat surface to park the bike, so coming to stop and or hoping on the bike in such uneven terrain is a real issue unless you are 6 ft 3 with 34 insteam. I did a camping trip to the smokies on a stock NC700X, I did 4 days of 500+ miles each day, and that is when you get to hate or love a bike, the wind turbulence issue was the biggest pain, second was the stock seat, third was the height of the bike more because of the terrain I was navigating, all the hills etc. Overall I enjoy the bike so much that now I am looking for a similar bike, that is why I am here trying to learn about the Versys to only find out you are reporting almost the same issues I had with the NC700X. One more issue, Honda decided to protect the engine with a premature rev limited so that really hinder the amount of fun you could have enjoying taking off fast that was another pain to find the power being cut off so soon after every red light take off. I hope this help anyone on the fence looking into this type of bike. I had a 2012 model, since then Honda has increased the engine to a 750cc, improve the seat, and the stock windshield, so 2015 or newer models of the NC750X might offer a better experience than I had with the 2012, which so far by far has been the best bike I have had to go on a long trip loaded with camping gear.

That's a helpful write up! I've been looking at the CTX700 and NC700 the past 2 years. I like the idea that a dual clutch transmission is available on those. I recently found a 650 Versys for sale for $3,400 with 5,000 mi on it and I've been trying to learn as much as I can about it. I really don't need the power of the 650 V so maybe the shorter seat height of the NC700 is what I should also be looking at, especially with its trunk where the fuel tank traditionally goes.

It is a tall bike to mount even at 5'11" but I like tall bikes especially if I take it off-road. It helps to turn the handlebars fully right so you can lean forward without smacking your head on the mirror. Like you I changed wind screen and had someone modify the seat a little. I just bought a new leftover 2017 1000 lt and only some of your dislikes apply for me. I'm only 5'7" so first it is a tall bike , but i manage it well. I own an 08 goldwing and traded my vstar 1300 tourer in on the versys and my previous bike was a honda vfr 800. so let me say that this versys feels light to me. now mine has a center stand but it's still kind of a weird angle to clean and lube the chain. i've only done this once so far as i have a littleI over 300 miles on it. My mirrors seem to work for me and the seat seems fine too. i have more of a problem with the boys on my goldwing. My windshield works fine too maybe because i'm short, so my biggest gripe would be the height and like you said getting on the bike takes a little thought and care. overall though so far i love it. I had the DL1000XT the other year. After all the awkward mounts and dismounts, something simple finally occurred to me. Come to a stop. Neutral. Turn off. Swing the kickstand down. Lean the bike onto the kickstand. Stand up on the pegs. Swing your right leg across the seat and put it on the ground. Remove your left foot from the left peg and walk away. To mount do the reverse. First put your left foot on the left footpeg, grab a bar, stand up on the peg. Swing right leg across and stand on both pegs. Sit down. Lift bike off sidestand and go about your ride. Why do us riders feel the need to swing our leg over a tall bike while we are standing on the ground? Do people mount a horse like this? Kickstands are stout. You can lean the entire bike on the stand and spin it around like a top. Standing on the pegs when the bike is in tripod mode won't hurt a thing.

I have been looking for a bike for years, and it really pisses me off that every bike I am interested in has fairly bad flaws that require a lot of time and money to fix. Like your reviews of the Versys. Bad windshield, bad seat, stupid tire sizes, etc. It makes you wonder if these companies even bother to test ride their products before they decide to sell them. I hate, utterly despise, the fact that center stands are not standard. Side stands are stupid. Everybody should be able to put a bike up on a center stand to remove wheels, adjust the chain, etc. Also, every bike should come with crash bars if they have expensive fairing, as well as a tool kit that provides all tools required for servicing+maintenance.

I'd say ride both and see which one you like best. I've ridden the MT and it's definitely a very sporty bike. Another idea: Check the insurance. It was crazy on the MT07 for me. That might help you make a choice.

Z650 probably more comfortable if you ride all weekend I think. My son had an MT-07 and it happens crazy good torque, and will wheelie all day. But the handlebars grip seem wide, and I didn’t like the seating position as well as the Z. Best you try to sit on both several times imho.

Thank you both. I went for a 2019 Z650 + tourer equipment which allows me more comfort. Also, I bought a full gear. I got so unlucky that because of this COVID-19 stuation my driving school was postopponed so I've got a brand new bike sitting in a garage. I waited my whole life to get the opportunity to get into motorcycling so I'll wait to get my drivng licence done and I'll ride it carefully. I'm a big fan of McRider, MotoJitsu and DanTheFireman. In driving school I was riding MT07 and I like that bike alot, especially the handlebar position. I have absolutely no experience in modifications and I always like to know other people's opinions. What do you think would a Z650 lose the handling abillities if the handlebar was replaced with a wider and straighter one like MT07 has? Also, I noticed there is a handlebar raiser adapter option available on Amazon. Why would I want a wider handlebar? I like the manuverability MT07 has and I'm not really into high speed type of riding. Share some thoughts on this, please. www.amazon.com/Motorcycle-Handlebar-Kawasaki-2017-2018-Adapters/dp/B07MBNTMSF/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=kawasaki+z650+handlebar&qid=1585522309&sr=8-5

Ive been looking into buying a Versys 1000, 650 or the KLR 650. I want a dual sport to take off road. I have heard that the Versys are only good for dirt roads and paved roads and that you can not fit dual sport tires on them. Is this True??

Brandon Berg : you can. But it may cost too much to justify. You would not want to take a 217kg bike with standard ground clearance to serious off road. However, check out Versys man, he is in Thailand and his Versys is the happiest bike in the world.

You can fit some off road tires on them, but the selection is limited because of the smaller front wheel. It's really more designed to be street capable. If you are wanting to do much off road or adventure riding, I'd recommend the V-Strom or a BMW GS. If you're wanting to go full dual sport and ride off road a lot, I can't recommend the CRF250L enough. I love mine.

Also, because of the seat height (I’m 5’7, 30 inch inseam) I just get on with my kickstand down. Just stand on foot peg and swing over. But I’m only 135 lbs. might be risky if you’re heavier. As for stopping and stuff, I just have good riding boots with a 1 inch bottom. If I’m putsin around without riding boots…well…yea it’s a one foot on toes stretch. Lol

5 THINGS that I hate about my 2009 Versys 650 ; #1 The Stock Windscreen (too small) #2 The Stock Exhausted (too silent) #3 The Foot Peg Position (too high) #4 The Buzzing Sounds (too noisy, but fixable) #5 The Stock Turn Signals (Not LED & not Water 💦 Proof)

I mean, it's pretty tall, but not impossible to manage, especially if you loosen up the rear suspension so you can get a bit more sag. Best advice I can give you is to go sit on one and ride it if you can. It's the only way to know for sure.

Depends on inseam. I'd keep it to 32" or higher. The author has a 30" inseam and has to tilt the bike on stops, and has to focus to mount it.

My thoughts and "fix" for my '17 650 Versys: 1. I've tried a tall Puig windshield (Givi's is 3cm taller) and I hate it: in the highest position there's a very remarkable sail effect on highway speeds and top buffeting. No air in hot weather will be crazy. So refused to buy touring windshield and I'm staying with a stock, using ear plugs. I don't do any vlogging, yeah. 2. Seat. Bought two pairs of cycling underwear shorts with the gel bulge. Problem solved. 32 inches inseam, even with highest preload I'm controlling the bike. 3. Mirrors are OK to me. Using without extension even it may be better with... 4. Installed center stand first day, chain maintenance is easy, washing is easy. 5. No a problem for me. Using left footpeg, I don't touch my sidecases and top box.

@@DorkintheRoad The only one available in Canada - SW-Motech. So, I've installed it. Not the best one because it causes obstruction to side stand at closing but usable. In US you can buy also T-Rex Racing centerstand kzread.info/dash/bejne/aZZn2c2phNi8g8o.html www.t-rex-racing.com/versys-650-center-stand-p/n54-15cs.htm . I don't know if it has the same problem as SW-Motech. The best one which is perfect and has no issue as I know is european Hepco & Becker center stand if you have a chance to order it. Cycling shorts are good enough for 2-3 days non-stop riding. If you do more - buy a Sargeant or Corbin seat.
