Hoping some more things open but, but I have noticed for progression Breckenridge peak 7 is so much better for learning to gain speed. I made a ton of progression just doing hat. Keystone rollers aside from Spring Dipper make it a bit harder to do that.

    The feeling when you start carving is indeed so great, you feel like you're perfectly in control of your edges and your movements become smooth and relaxed. That also makes more experienced riders last way longer without tiring through the day, because you waste so much less energy on bad posture. Getting rid of beginner bad habits was quite a challenge though.

    The only thing I would add is having flex in the knees and lowering center of gravity. Most people try riding with their legs nearly straight. Keeping knees bent and relaxed absorbs bumps and lows the rider to carry more speed.

  • @illegalskillsexception9826

    I think the most beginner mistake is the back foot ruddering and riding with open shoulder. It is easy to get used to riding with stacked shoulders but it takes a while to get used to the front foot/knee steering. I think one should practice that with normal turns on mellow slopes. You can watch 100 videos but its all about the time required for your body to say "Aha, this feels right and natural". You don't need to watch technical videos on how to carve, you just happen to pick it up with time naturally. That's the beauty of this sport.

    Agree with it all….my only response is for a more experienced boarder yes these things help you grow. But for a newbie or moderate novice that isn’t comfortable with the speed these generate it’s not something they feel comfortable with. That’s where the open shoulder/rear rudder comes into play. They are trying to control the speed so they are over correcting to feel safe. Does that make sense?

  • @AMac815

    @AMac815

    Foot ruddering is because most people start out with the stance that "feels" right and put their dominant foot in the back when really the dominant foot should be the drive foot up front. The upside is that these riders can learn switch faster because that puts their dominant foot back up front. I also think a reason hybrid camber profiles have gained popularity, especially rocker between the inserts, is because many of these reward a more back foot steering style. No judgment, you can start with any stance and become proficient, but it's always struck me that so many people put their dominant foot in the backseat when learning.

    @@AMac815 that is so funny you say that because I'm right-dominant-everything, goofy felt more natural to me and I seem to have skipped the ruddering stage entirely. I may have even had the opposite problem. When I was struggling to link my turns, I took a private lesson and my instructor said "don't be afraid to use your back foot" and it was like something finally clicked that hadn't for two seasons, especially with going heels to toes. Sometimes still have to remind myself to pressure the rear more. And switch terrifies me, lol. Also, since having my own board I've decided I don't like rocker between the inserts, it just feels less controllable.

    Early turn initiation. You see him doing it on every turn. He transitions to the next edge while still facing uphill and same while facing downhill. An instructor pointed it out to me and my carving improved immediately. His board is never flat down the fall line other than when he’s showing us how not to ride. Thanks for the awesome video!!!

  • @spenserrr

    @spenserrr

    2 жыл бұрын

    True, as well as forward stance angles (to whatever degree). With the exception of Knapton, none of the current nor historical best turners & carvers are riding a parallel, closed, duck posture. Whether they’re mountain freestylers/freeriders who are known for their turning & edging, or dedicated carvers, racers, slalom riders, or people winning the established banked slaloms like at Baker, riding styles from brands like Korua, or advanced carving like what’s more common in Japan, Europe or Russia, it’s all done with forward, open, directional stance and posture, for good reason. That said, these videos aren’t meant to teach expert carvers, or teach people to be expert carvers - they are meant to help beginners who haven’t developed basic fundamentals to get beyond where they are at, which is of course a valuable thing to teach. But, it’s important to discern between these two majorly different things, and to not confuse this video for “true” or expert/aggressive proper carving, which means finished turns, higher speed, more g-force, more board angulation, etc.. these tutorials are just about helping people to learn basic turns and to be on each edge while riding along the sidecut, rather than skidding and washing.

Duck stance will only ruin your knees, only beneficial for the .002% of riding switch stance. The extra wide stance I see at hills cracks me up.. 25-27" stance on a kid that's 5'7"!! I just rode all the time and eventually taught myself. Getting back into it now and thinking about what am I actually doing and how can i make it better. Also id like to help others learn. My advice is more weight on your front foot and definitely bend your knees. Also practice riding switch right away and you will be a better rider in the long run. Also going across the entire run on one edge then across to the other side on the opposite edge allows you to get comfortable and feel each edge while practicing balance !

    What I realized when I finally got carving down was my body's fear of two things that actually literally make carving easier and possible - speed and leaning into the carve. I was fearing just eating it if I leaned into it. But that literally made it easier to catch the carve. Also speed. The slower you are the harder it is to catch your balance when carving. The ice also throws your board off more and your board doesnt cut through the snow as smoothly when you are slow. Think of it much like trying to bike on two wheels slowly. You only start picking up a balance when you pick up speed.

    Yeah, man, I know I’m rear foot ruddering and want to ride that edge but 1) I can’t seem to just “find the edge” because the rear foot is washing out and 2) I accumulate too much speed too fast. Point 1 isn’t all that useful as a result but the waist bend and knee steering advice is spot on.

    Try keeping ur knees bent throughout the turn, extend up out the turn. If you’re picking up too much speed try over turning (if that makes sense) do larger sweeping turns to dump some speed, almost like you’re turning up the hill for a second. It’ll come tho keep pressing.

    Another thing that I struggled with is not trusting your board or yourself. When you’re going that kind of speed or a little uncomfortable speeds and when you turn you want to lean with your board but you may fear falling over but just remember it is fine if you fall even at those speeds. Most crashes and broken bones happen when you’re doing tricks so as long as if you aren’t doing that as a beginner than you WILL BE FINE. trust. Your board will keep you upright but finally remember to not lean TOO much when your going at slower speeds because then you’ll most likely fall. It just takes time feeling it as he said in the video and learning various things to help yourself progress.

    This tutorial is great and very informative for those learning the body position to carve and want to remain open and dynamic to do other things. For those looking for aggressive heelside carves and so on, look to surfers and how their shoulders, hips, and knees rotate during heelside turns. Without setting your bindings to all forward you can still achieve aggressive heelside carves with simple a rotation of your rear knee to face more towards the front and slight opening of the shoulders throught turn iniation. This goes against the purpose of this video, but for Experienced riders and so on, valuable information to build up to the heel side euros.

    These are all great suggestions! My biggest feedback as an instructor watching you carve is to keep the upper body more quiet. The guy in this video is doing a lot with his arms every carved turn is initiated by the lower body and shoulders/upper body should be relaxed and along for the ride.

Funny how the thing that I got to fill the void of not having a snowboard has in turn, help me snowboard 🤷🏼👌🏽😁 And the snowboard helps the onewheel. Awesome relationship

    About the backward roatering... i find i do that to throw off speed because if i just pure carve down a steep then i can pick up too much speed too quickly. I guess let me rephrase, I think the roatering with the book foot helps on a steep you've never gone down before because you're not sure how fast you can take it or if the snow is too choppy and will throw you up in the air if you just straight carve it. Like, if possible, could you do some of these videos on steeper and more difficult terrain? It looks easy when you go down these mellow greens or whatever they are but I think people who watch/subscribe to your channel are probably going down more difficult stuff...

    It really does come down to practice time. I've been snowboarding about 8 times already and I've progressed nicely. I can carve on heelside but I just can't get my toeside carve down. I turn around and I see the nice line I leave behind on heelside but when I look at my toeside I see the marks I leave from ruddering. I know I have to get on my edge more and all these tips are amazing cause they've helped on my heel side carves but I just can't seem to get toeside down. It will take more time and I know that but I'll keep having fun while I'm out there

    Everyone has a side that is the weaker side. I like that he called it stomping a bug. I spread my toes as I push down on my lead foot to initiate the turn like you are pushing down on the gas pedal. Then it is a very small movement but as I am riding that edge my weight shifts very slightly to my back foot and I press my back toe down. When you are carving just like he said shoulders stacked and bending at the knees and ankles. If you are still having trouble adjust your highback forward this forces your ankles to flex and knees to bend. Keep practicing!!!

    Great video, but I don’t really get the front knee action. The door and big thing doesn’t really explain to me what physical action the front leg is doing. Is it like trying to rotate your foot/ankle/knee left and then right? Or something else?

    I kinda disagree with the shoulder wide open because if your binding is double positive you have to keep both your shoulders forward for better pencil line heel sides and backsides on Euro carving😅

    Took my first and only snowboarding lesson 2019 winter after struggling to with trying to figure it out myself for a week, then wasn’t able to go 2020 or 2021 to go snowboarding till this last February. And no clue why but suddenly I was just able to snowboard great down the mountain. No clue why I didn’t continue to struggle like hell after the giant break but I won’t fight it, something just clicked.

    I ride open shoulder, flat board ripping all the time, you just need to know how to get into carve mode fast and get stacked. I guess i dont need to carve in lots of situations but having a smooth flow helps. Then you start looking like your effortlessly riding down the hill.

    great video. ill have to see if im carving right, i think i am bc my friend said i did good, im just nervous with the speed i guess i just need confidence that im not going to go flying into the trees, trails are narrow in new york and vermont. do you have any tips for boots? bc i bought step on burton boots ions and my front foot is fine but my back foot is tight and i took the insole out already but its crushing the top of my foot, its not enough room i think, its better that i took the insole out but its still killing me so riding down the trails with pain kills my endurance.

    Sorry to correct you on your bug stomping theory, but in fact as in almost every other sport everything starts with your eyes. You spot where you want to go, your head tilts initiating the tilt of your shoulders and arms and from there on down to your knees. You can actually see it perfectly on your bug stomping section. This engagement of the shoulders and the resulting weight shift is what actually starts the turn and this may be the most important point to understand. As for the rest, good summary, always be as active in your knees as possible. Cheers
