Five Minute Histories: The H. L. Mencken House [2020 Preservation Awards!]
Good morning! Since the 1960s, Baltimore Heritage has recognized fabulous historic preservation and heritage projects with annual awards. Today’s video is the kick-off of our 2020 Preservation Awards series within our Five Minute Histories program. Today, please tune in to celebrate the hard work and dedication it took to meticulously restore the H.L. Mencken House. Seeing Mencken’s house is the lone reason I would visit Baltimore.
Back in the 1970s my mother and I had the opportunity to do a walking tour of several Union Square houses (Mencken's house wasn't open for tours). Some were restored and some were a work in progress. The houses are beautifully detailed inside that would cost a fortune today to replicate, if even possible to do so. Glad to see some of the beautiful Baltimore rowhomes being preserved. Oh, and another Poly graduate here - class of 1969. :)
I went on a Christmas tour of old houses in 1986 and H.L. house was on that tour.
