Five Minute Histories: The Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Museum

Join us on the water at the Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Museum to learn about the two incredible individuals that the museum is named for. In 1838, Douglass escaped his enslavement in Baltimore and eventually became one of our nation’s most influential abolitionists. After the Civil War, labor and Civil Rights activist Isaac Myers helped found the the country’s largest Black-owned ship repair company right here in Baltimore. We also delve into the history of the 1840s warehouse, most likely the oldest commercial structure on our waterfront. Thanks for watching and see you next week with another video.
This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." Every week, we’ll record a short video about a different historic place in Baltimore and post it on our Facebook page and KZread channel.

My wife & I enjoyed a couple of special events at that museum when we used to live in Laurel, and we had dinner one night in the restaurant (although I don't think that it was called Ampersea then).

This is very interesting and educational. I have run and walked past this warehouse and had no idea of its history.

Wow! The Ship Caulkers' Houses have been wonderfully restored! 😃 When I left MD in 2019, they still looked like the "before" photo! (I remember being able to go inside them once during one of the Doors Open Baltimore events, and they were in BAD shape then!)

Fells Point great area but crime and culture problems have reduced it worth a visit.
